OBJECTIVE: To report our initial experience with the posterior sagittal pararectal approach as an alternative in the treatment of complicated urethral distraction defect after pelvic trauma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients with posttraumatic pelvic fracture urethral distraction defects (PFUDDs) underwent urethroplasty in our department from March 2003 to June 2006. In 7 of those patients, the posterior sagittal pararectal approach was utilised. BACKGROUND Plasmacytoid is a rare histological variant of urothelial carcinoma (UC). Since the first reported case of plasmacytoid urothelial carcinoma (PUC), in 1991, only about 100 cases have since been reported, with most cases involving the bladder. Urothelial carcinomas of the upper urinary tract represent only 5% of urothelial cancers. To the best of our knowledge, there has only been 1 reported case of PUC of the ureter. Robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) is the surgical standard of care for patients with localized prostate cancer. Although uncommon, the procedure involves a potential risk of injury to adjacent anatomical structures. We report on a unique case of iatrogenic ureteral injury during RALP that required subsequent robotic-assisted laparoscopic ureteral reimplantation for definitive repair. Pseudocarcinomatous epithelial hyperplasia in the bladder is a little known phenomenon, recognized to be associated with prior irradiation and/or chemotherapy. Whether this process can occur outside of this setting has not been studied.
