Individual differences in anticipatory activity to food rewards predict cue-induced appetitive 50-kHz calls in rats.

Reward-related stimuli come to acquire incentive salience through Pavlovian learning and become capable of controlling reward-oriented behaviors. Here, we examined individual differences in anticipatory activity elicited by reward-related cues as indicative of how animals attribute incentive salience to otherwise neutral stimuli. Since adult rats can signal incentive motivation states through ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) at around 50-kHz, such calls were recorded in food-deprived rats trained to associate cues with food rewards, which were subsequently devalued by satiation. We found that th

Deep Brain Stimulation during Pregnancy and Delivery: Experience from a Series of "DBS Babies".

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is widely used to improve quality of life in movement disorders (MD) and psychiatric diseases. Even though the ability to have children has a big impact on patients' life, only a few studies describe the role of DBS in pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: To describe risks and management of women treated by DBS for disabling MD or psychiatric diseases during pregnancy and delivery. METHODS: We report a retrospective case series of women, followed in two DBS centers, who became pregnant and went on to give birth to a child while suffering from disabling MD or psych

Bipolar disorder in adults with Asperger׳s Syndrome: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Asperger׳s Syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder included in the Autism Spectrum (ASD). The current literature shows growing evidence of a high rate of comorbidity between AS and other psychiatric disorders, particularly Bipolar Disorder (BD). We reviewed available epidemiological and clinical data on BD-AS comorbidity and its diagnostic and therapeutic implications METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted through PubMed, Scopus and Psych-Info using combinations of the following search terms: Asperger׳s Syndrome, Bipolar Disorder, depression, mood diso

Protein array profiling of tic patient sera reveals a broad range and enhanced immune response against Group A Streptococcus antigens.

The human pathogen Group A Streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes, GAS) is widely recognized as a major cause of common pharyngitis as well as of severe invasive diseases and non-suppurative sequelae associated with the existence of GAS antigens eliciting host autoantibodies. It has been proposed that a subset of paediatric disorders characterized by tics and obsessive-compulsive symptoms would exacerbate in association with relapses of GAS-associated pharyngitis. This hypothesis is however still controversial. In the attempt to shed light on the contribution of GAS infections to the onset of n

Quetiapine decreases alcohol consumption, craving, and psychiatric symptoms in dually diagnosed alcoholics.

AIMS: Patients with dual diagnosis are often excluded from clinical trials although more than half of all individuals with Bipolar Disorder have a substance abuse problem at some point in their lifetime, representing a high-risk clinical population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of quetiapine in the treatment of alcohol dependence comorbid with disorders characterized by high levels of mood and behavioral instability. METHODS: Twenty-eight subjects, after a detoxification period, were orally treated with flexible doses of quetiapine for 16 weeks. At each

Novel rating scales for schizophrenia - Targeted Inventory on Problems in Schizophrenia (TIP-Sz) and Functional Assessment for Comprehensive Treatment of Schizophrenia (FACT-Sz).

OBJECTIVE: Many rating scales have been in use to evaluate various symptomatic domains, and eventually there are too many scales to be selected and widely utilized in busy real-world settings. Relevant, quick, and user-friendly assessment scales are needed to facilitate measurement-based treatment of schizophrenia. METHODS: The authors created unique convenient assessment scales: Targeted Inventory on Problems in Schizophrenia (TIP-Sz), and Functional Assessment for Comprehensive Treatment of Schizophrenia (FACT-Sz). The TIP-Sz consists of 10 items (behavioral dyscontrol/disorganization, host

Characteristics of monozygotic twins discordant for bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: We studied monozygotic (MZ) twins who were discordant for bulimia nervosa in order to identify environmental factors that could have contributed to the expression of bulimia nervosa in only one member of these genetically identical twin pairs. METHOD: Female twin pairs from the Virginia Twin Registry were identified. One twin met DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa (excluding the frequency and duration criterion) and the co-twin either reported some symptoms of bulimia nervosa but never met full diagnostic criteria (n = 20 pairs) or reported no symptoms of bulimia nervosa (n = 1

Sensory phenomena in obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette's disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous disorder with some forms related to tics and Tourette's disorder. The present study was undertaken to investigate the sensory phenomena in patients with OCD and/or Tourette's disorder to determine if these phenotypic features represent valid clinical indices for differentiating tic-related OCD from non-tic-related OCD. METHOD: We evaluated 20 adult outpatients with OCD, 20 with OCD plus Tourette's disorder, and 21 with Tourette's disorder, using a semistructured interview designed to assess s

Elevated cerebrospinal fluid levels of oxytocin in obsessive-compulsive disorder. Comparison with Tourette's syndrome and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Limited neurobiological data have implicated central arginine vasopressin in the pathobiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Based on twin, family genetic, and pharmacological studies, some forms of OCD are etiologically related to Tourette's syndrome. The role of arginine vasopressin and related compounds such as oxytocin in Tourette's syndrome has not been previously explored. METHODS: To compare cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of arginine vasopressin and oxytocin, we collected CSF at midday in a standardized fashion from a total of 83 individuals (29 patients with OCD

Stereotypic behaviour in the deer mouse: pharmacological validation and relevance for obsessive compulsive disorder.

Stereotypy is an important manifestation of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD involves disturbed serotonin and dopamine pathways, and demonstrates a selective response to serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRI), with limited to no response to noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (NRI). Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) engage in various spontaneous stereotypic behaviours, including somersaulting, jumping and pattern running, and has to date not been explored for possible relevance for OCD. We studied the population diversity of spontaneous stereotypy in these animals, followed by asse

A pilot study of early onset obsessive-compulsive disorder: Symptom dimensions and association analysis with polymorphisms of the serotonin transporter gene.

Our aim was to introduce more homogenous phenotypes for studying genetic variations in the clinically heterogeneous obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) beside classical case-control analysis. Symptoms were assessed with Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS), and principle component analysis of the lifetime symptom categories yielded four factors (Cleaning, Obsessive, Compulsive, Sexual). The comparison of serotonin transporter linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) in 102 OCD patients and 223 controls showed an increased L-allele frequency but no difference was observed when

Dependent personality, separation anxiety disorder and other anxiety disorders in OCD.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether dependent personality and/or general personality dimensions might explain the strong relationships between separation anxiety disorder (Sep-AD) and three other anxiety disorders (agoraphobia, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder) in individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: Using data from 509 adult participants collected during the OCD Collaborative Genetic Study, we used logistic regression models to evaluate the relationships between Sep-AD, dependent personality score, general personality dimension

Impulsive choice and response in dopamine agonist-related impulse control behaviors.

RATIONALE: Dopaminergic medication-related impulse control disorders (ICDs) such as pathological gambling and compulsive shopping have been reported in Parkinson's disease (PD). HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that dopamine agonists (DAs) would be associated with greater impulsive choice or greater discounting of delayed rewards in PD patients with ICDs (PDI). METHODS: Fourteen PDI patients, 14 PD controls without ICDs, and 16 medication-free matched normal controls were tested on the Experiential Discounting Task (EDT), a feedback-based intertemporal choice task, spatial working memory, and att

Variants of the dopamine D2 receptor gene and risperidone-induced hyperprolactinemia in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between hyperprolactinemia and variants of the dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) gene in children and adolescents in long-term treatment with risperidone. METHODS: Medically healthy 7 to 17-year-old patients chronically treated with risperidone but receiving no other antipsychotics were recruited in a cross-sectional study. Four DRD2 variants were genotyped and prolactin concentration was measured. Medication history was obtained from the medical records. The effect of the TaqIA variants of the DRD2 on the risk of risperidone-induced hyperprolactinemia was

Obsessive-compulsive disorder and trichotillomania: a phenomenological comparison.

BACKGROUND: Similarities between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and trichotillomania (TTM) have been widely recognized. Nevertheless, there is evidence of important differences between these two disorders. Some authors have conceptualized the disorders as lying on an OCD spectrum of conditions. METHODS: Two hundred and seventy eight OCD patients (n = 278: 148 male; 130 female) and 54 TTM patients (n = 54; 5 male; 49 female) of all ages were interviewed. Female patients were compared on select demographic and clinical variables, including comorbid axis I and II disorders, and temperament/

Anxiety and psychoactive substance use disorder comorbidity in anorexia nervosa or depression.

OBJECTIVE: This study considered whether the prevalence and type of anxiety and psychoactive substance use disorder (PSUD) diagnoses differ between women with spectrum anorexia nervosa (AN) (N=40) and women with major depressive disorder (N = 58) participating in outpatient clinical trials. METHOD: Anxiety and PSUD diagnoses (according to criteria in the 3rd Rev. ed. of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) were assessed using structured clinical interviews. Comparisons were made between AN subtypes (restricting or binge eating/purging) and by history of depression within

Thirty-month outcome in patients with anorexia or bulimia nervosa and concomitant obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examines whether concomitant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) indicates a poorer prognosis for patients with anorexia or bulimia nervosa. METHOD: Seventy-five female inpatients who met DSM-IV criteria for anorexia or bulimia nervosa took part in the follow-up study; 29 of these patients met criteria for concomitant OCD. All patients were investigated twice: during inpatient treatment and at follow-up 30 months after discharge. A semistructured diagnostic interview was used as well as the Eating Disorder Inventory and the Hamburg Obsession-Compulsion Inventory--

Evidence against a genetic relationship between Tourette's syndrome and anxiety, depression, panic and phobic disorders.

Analyses were undertaken to examine whether a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, affective, substance abuse and psychotic disorders, represent variant manifestations of Tourette's syndrome (TS). Previous studies have suggested that chronic tics (CT) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are variant expressions of TS since both CT and OCD are elevated among relatives of TS probands. In the current study, no other psychiatric disorder was significantly elevated among the relatives who did not have TS, CT or OCD when compared with a control sample. These findings are not co
