Piezoelectric Surgery and Oral Cavity Disorders in Small Mammals.

Piezoelectric surgery, leveraging ultrasonic vibrations for selective cutting of mineralized tissues while preserving soft tissue integrity, has revolutionized veterinary dental and maxillofacial procedures. This technique enhances precision, reduces postoperative pain, and accelerates healing by minimizing damage to surrounding structures. Its antibacterial cavitation effects and ability to address fragile bone structures make it suitable for rabbits and small exotic mammals. Applications include dental extractions, treatment of osteomyelitis, otitis media and chronic rhinitis. Ultrasonic wou

Glucose Homeostasis and Derangement in Birds.

Birds (class Aves) have 1.5 to 2 times higher blood glucose concentrations than mammals of comparable sizes. The reasons for this have been studied and are believed to be multifactorial. There is low expression of insulin receptors, decreased sensitivity of the pancreatic β-cells to glucose, an absent or dysfunctional glucose transporter type 4 pathway, and increased blood glucagon concentrations. Glucagon and somatostatin appear to play a greater role than insulin in glucose homeostasis in birds. Severe hyperglycemia in birds can be attributed to diabetes mellitus, necessitating therapy to pr

Rabbit Gastroenterology.

Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are a common cause of emergency presentation in rabbits. Gastrointestinal stasis is a syndrome that is frequently caused by various primary conditions (including but not limited to affections of the GI tract itself). Over the last years, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and prognosis of GI disorders-such as GI obstructions, appendicitis, rabbit hemorrhagic virus disease, or liver lobe torsion-have been studied. Recent data about diseases of the stomach, intestine, liver, and pancreas in rabbits are reviewed in this article.

Nutritional Physiology and Feeding of Companion Rodents.

Rodents represent a diverse group that shares commonalities in approaches to dietary management. Nutritional management of companion rodents must diverge from laboratory animal management, and must also consider the importance of a healthy gastrointestinal microbiome. Published requirements must be applied appropriately to species, life stage, and body condition management. Common nutritional health concerns include digestive-tract dysbiosis, gastrointestinal stasis, dental malocclusion, obesity, and hypervitaminosis D. Health issues may be avoided or alleviated through proactive management of

Rabbit Dermatology.

The majority of rabbit skin disease presentations can be divided into pruritus, alopecia, scaling, and nodules. Some disease will have more than one of these clinical signs. Ectoparasites, bacterial and fungal infections, and neoplasia account for most of the causes seen. Diagnostic tests include skin scraping and cytology, microbial culture, and biopsy. Therapy is dependent on cause. In addition to discussing the various causes and their treatments, important clinical care points are noted.

Physical Rehabilitation in Zoological Companion Animals.

Animal physical rehabilitation is one of the fast-growing fields in veterinary medicine in recent years. It has become increasingly common in small animal practice and will continue to emerge as an essential aspect of veterinary medicine that plays a vital role in the care of animals with physical impairments or disabilities from surgery, injuries, or diseases.1 This is true now more than ever because of the increasing advances in lifesaving treatments, the increased lifespan of companion animals, and the growth of chronic conditions, of which many are associated with movement disorders. The A

Pain Recognition and Assessment in Birds.

The recognition and assessment of pain in avian species are crucial tools in providing adequate supportive care in clinical, laboratory, zoologic, rehabilitation, and companion animal settings. With birds being a highly diverse class of species, there is still much to be determined regarding how to create specific criteria to recognize and assess pain in these animals. This article provides a clinical review on the physiology of pain in birds, observed behavioral and physiologic alterations with pain, how different sources and degrees of pain can alter behaviors observed, and how this informat

Treatment of Pain in Ferrets.

Ferrets often require pain management as part of comprehensive veterinary care. Recognition and objective quantification of pain, such as the ferret grimace scale, are the first steps of an analgesic plan. As in other species, a multimodal approach to pain management is preferred, which includes combining analgesic drugs of multiple classes and/or techniques to affect different areas of the pain pathway. This article reviews the current published literature on analgesic medications in domestic ferrets, including specific drugs, doses, dosing intervals, and routes of administration.

Treatment of Pain in Birds.

This article provides an overview of the current understanding of evidence-based clinical analgesic use in birds. The field of avian analgesia has dramatically expanded during the last 20 years, affording more options for alleviating both acute and chronic pain. These options include opioids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, local anesthetics, and/or other drugs like gabapentin, amantadine, and cannabinoids, acting at different points in the nociceptive system thereby helping to provide greater pain relief while reducing the risk of adverse effects when combined.

Amphibian Dermatology.

Amphibians are susceptible to a multitude of skin disorders, many of which can appear grossly similar. The most common clinical presentations include hyperemia, discoloration, dermal mass, ulceration, and necrosis. Many amphibian skin diseases are related to captive husbandry. The diagnostic process starts with environmental evaluations, a full history, physical examination and sampling for direct observation, histology, polymerase chain reaction testing, and bacterial and fungal culture. This review emphasizes the main conditions encountered in amphibian dermatology.

Avian Dermatology.

Dermatologic conditions are common in avian practice and can be caused by a huge array of potential disorders, ranging from infectious diseases, ectoparasites, metabolic disorders, nutritional deficiencies, and management deficits. The skin is the largest organ in the body and has the potential to lead to significant discomfort and welfare compromise when pathology is present. Some conditions may be relatively pathognomonic based on gross findings, whereas others may require a full diagnostic workup to investigate. Getting to the bottom of skin lesions and disorders often involves identificati

Ferret Pediatrics.

Ferrets are bred to be pets, utilized for hunting, and as laboratory models. Despite the fact that ferrets in some areas of the world are neutered by the breeder before entering the pet trade, the importance of pediatric management should not be overlooked. Pregnant, whelping, and lactating jills should be closely monitored and kept in a quiet, stress-free environment. Hand-rearing baby kits is very challenging due to their requirement for ferret milk. Minimizing maternal stress and disease can prevent the need to hand rear kits. Infectious diseases in juvenile ferrets include canine distemper

Updates for Reptile Pediatric Medicine.

The health of hatchling, juvenile, and young adult reptiles continues to be plagued by historic nutritional deficiencies, old and emerging infectious diseases, and more recent phenotype-selective congenital abnormalities that impact welfare. Knowledge of mating seasonality, average egg counts, gestation times, and age and/or size for sexual maturity is necessary to help guide best practices for care of pediatric reptiles. Calcium, vitamin D3, and ultraviolet B (UVB) lighting recommendations vary in effectiveness amongst different species and can change with age. Phenotype-selective color patte

Cardiology in Rabbits and Rodents-Common Cardiac Diseases, Therapeutic Options, and Limitations.

Information about heart diseases and their treatment is still sparce for rabbits and rodents. Dilated cardiomyopathy seems to occur more frequently in rabbits, whereas in guinea pigs pericardial effusion is often diagnosed. There are still no available therapeutic studies for heart diseases in rabbits and rodents, and treatment is often extrapolated from dogs and cats. Consideration should be given to the off-label use of drugs, mostly not licensed in the species mentioned in this article.

Ferret Cardiology.

Cardiac disease is relatively common in middle-aged to older ferrets and may comprise acquired or congenital disorders leading to problems with conduction, contractility, or outflow. Clinical signs are often seen in advanced stages of the disease, with lethargy, hind limb weakness, ascites, hepatosplenomegaly, and respiratory distress owing to pleural effusion or lung edema being prominent features. Diagnostic workup and therapeutic intervention largely follow guidelines such as those established for dogs and cats, with feline doses often serving as a starting point for therapy.

Snake Sedation and Anesthesia.

Snakes can be more challenging to anesthetize compared with other animals because of anatomic and physiologic differences, a wide range of patient sizes, and variable responses to anesthetic agents. Snakes have preferred optimal temperature zones, which, along with physiologic characteristics, such as the ability to shunt blood toward or away from the lungs, can have an impact on anesthesia. Injectable agents, including benzodiazepines, α2-agonists, opioids, propofol, and alfaxalone, as well as inhalant anesthetics can be used to anesthetize snakes. Pain management must be incorporated to the
