Hierarchical bio-based flame retardant BNNS@PA@Fe-MOFs: A nanomaterials self-assembly strategy towards reducing fire hazard of polylactic acid and improving its degradation.

As a substitute for petroleum-based polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) always attracts great interest due to its unique eco-friendly properties and versatile applications. However, the inherent high flammability and slow natural degradation are still challenging for its wide usage. In this study, a multi-level sushi roll structured flame retardant (B@(D + E)@P-Fe) composed of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS), iron metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs), and phytic acid (PA) was synthesized through self-assembly technology and create a flame retardant PLA system. Loading of 6 wt% B@(D + E)@P-Fe enabled

Active food packaging based on Pickering emulsions of essential oils stabilized by cationic cellulose nanofibers.

Due to environmental concerns about non-biodegradability of conventional plastic packaging, there is a growing shift towards sustainable alternatives such as paper-based food packaging. In this context, Pickering emulsions have been developed, incorporating clove and thyme essential oils and stabilized by cationic cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs). This study evaluates the antioxidant and antimicrobial performance of emulsion-coated paper based on varying concentration of constituents. The innovative aspect of this research lies in the use of CCNFs as bio-based stabilizing agent. Their high aspect

Accelerated removal of solvent residuals from PLGA microparticles by alcohol vapor-assisted fluidized bed drying.

The removal of residual solvents from biodegradable poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microparticles by fluidized bed drying was investigated. Microparticles were prepared by the O/W solvent extraction/evaporation method and the influence of various process and formulation parameters on the secondary drying was studied. PLGA microparticles and films were characterized for residual organic solvent and water content, recrystallisation, surface morphology, drug loading and in-vitro release of the drugs dexamethasone and risperidone. While alcohol-free fluidized bed drying decreased the residu

Sustainable polylactide materials with the function of blocking a specific wavelength of light based on aloe-emodin.

Polylactide, a biodegradable polymer, can alleviate white pollution, but the use of polylactide in food packaging is limited by high transmittance to light with a specific wavelength, UV (185-400 nm) and short-wavelength visible (400-500 nm) light. Herein, the polylactide end-capped with renewable light absorber aloe-emodin (PLA-En), is blended with commercial polylactide (PLA) to fabricate the polylactide film with the function of blocking light with a specific wavelength, PLA/PLA-En film. Only 40 % of light around 287 and 430 nm transmits through PLA/PLA-En film incorporating 3 mass% of PLA-

Three-Dimensional Collagen Membranes Challenging the Gold Standard in Gingival Recession.

Gingival recession is a commonly encountered chief complaint in a dental office, most commonly presenting as pain or sensitivity on intake of food or sometimes just seen as an esthetic concern which may present in a localized or generalized form. Such interest toward dental esthetics has encouraged clinicians to formulate newer minimally invasive surgical techniques which are short but still deliver predictable long-term benefits in restoring the patient's smile. One such method was evaluated in the present short communication where a commercially available, biodegradable, and volume-stable co

Compostable Polylactide and Cellulose Based Packaging for Fresh-Cut Cherry Tomatoes: Performance Evaluation and Influence of Sterilization Treatment.

For food packaging, plastic materials display large appeal, mostly due to their versatility, mechanical, optical and barrier properties. However, they play an important role in environmental concerns and waste management issue. Compostable bioplastics represent alternative materials designed for a lower environmental impact. In this work, a biobased compostable packaging, constituted by polylactide (PLA) trays and NatureFlex™ film, was evaluated for fresh-cut cherry tomato. A comparative analysis was accomplished using traditional packaging materials, that is, polyethylene terephtalate (PET) t

Shape memory histocompatible and biodegradable sponges for subcutaneous defect filling and repair: greatly reducing surgical incision.

Reducing surgical incision for large area subcutaneous defect filling and repair is a great challenge in the biomedical field, especially for plastic surgery. In this study, a novel hydroxyethyl cellulose/soy protein isolate (HEC/SPI) composite sponge (EHSS) with a fluid responsive shape memory property was constructed, whose thickness could be controlled by hot-pressing conditions to reduce the required surgical incision greatly. Effects of the main factors such as pressure, temperature and hot-pressing cycles on the recovery degree of EHSS were investigated systematically. The structure and

Tailoring the physicochemical and shape memory properties of the biodegradable polymer poly(glycerol dodecanoate) via curing conditions.

A major challenge in the repair and regeneration of soft tissue damage occurring as a result of aging, injury, or disease is recapitulating the biomechanical properties of the native tissue. Ideally, a candidate biomaterial for soft tissue engineering applications should be biocompatible, nonlinearly elastic to match soft tissue mechanical behavior, biodegradable to enable tissue remodeling, and tailorable to achieve a range of nonlinear elastic mechanical properties to match specific soft tissues. In addition, for cardiac and other applications, the biomaterial should have shape memory charac

Fabrication of a Biodegradable Implant with Tunable Characteristics for Bone Implant Applications.

Biodegradable polymers are appealing material for the manufacturing of surgical implants as such implants break down in vivo, negating the need for a subsequent operation for removal. Many biocompatible polymers produce acidic breakdown products that can lead to localized inflammation and osteolysis. This study assesses the feasibility of fabricating implants out of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC)-starch that degrades into CO2 and water. The basic compression modulus of PPC-starch (1:1 w/w) is 34 MPa; however, the addition of glycerol (1% w/w) and water as plasticizers doubles this value and e

Examination of aqueous oxidized cellulose dispersions as a potential drug carrier. I. Preparation and characterization of oxidized cellulose-phenylpropanolamine complexes.

Partially neutralized aqueous dispersions of oxidized cellulose (OC) (COOH content 24.2%; degree of neutralization [DN] 0.22-0.44; solid content 14.4% wt/wt), a biocompatible biodegradable polymer, were prepared and their use to entrap an amine drug was demonstrated. Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride (PPA.HCl) was used as a model drug. OCA-PPA complexes were prepared by adding the drug solution to the OC dispersion. Light microscopy, powder x-ray diffractometry (PXRD), and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize hydrated and dried OC and the OC-PPA complexes.

Enhancing the Flexibility and Hydrophilicity of PLA via Polymer Blends: Electrospinning vs. Solvent Casting.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer with high tensile strength, high stiffness, and biocompatibility, but its brittleness and hydrophobicity limit its applications. This study aims to address these limitations by blending PLA with polycaprolactone (PCL) to enhance flexibility and with polyethylene oxide (PEO) to improve hydrophilicity. Unlike conventional approaches where PEO serves as a plasticizer, this study investigated PEO as a major blend component. Electrospinning and solvent casting, which differ in their solvent evaporation rates, were employed to fabricate thin films of

Replacing the greater evil: Can legalizing decentralized waste burning in improved devices reduce waste burning emissions for improved air quality?

Open waste burning emissions constitute a significant source of air pollution affecting human health in India. In regions where cleaner fuels have displaced solid biofuel usage, open waste burning is rapidly becoming one of the largest sources of airborne human class-I-carcinogens and particulate matter. As the establishment of waste management infrastructure in rural India is likely to take years, we explore whether health-relevant emissions can be reduced by legalizing the burning of dry non-biodegradable waste in improved devices. We measure the emission factors of 76 VOCs, CH4, CO, and CO2

Advanced sustainable processes via functionalized Fe-N co-doped fishbone biochar for the remediation of plasticizer di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate-contaminated marine sediment.

Sediments are important sinks for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer, and thus, maintaining the sediment quality is essential for eliminating plasticizers in aqueous environments and recovering the sediment ecological functions. To mitigate the potential risks of endocrine-disrupting compounds, identifying an effective and eco-friendly degradation process of organic pollutants from sediments is important. However, sustainable and efficient utilization of slow pyrolysis for converting shark fishbone to generate shark fishbone biochar (SFBC) has rarely been explored. Herein, SFBC

Study on physicochemical properties, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of okara soluble dietary fiber/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/thyme essential oil active edible composite films incorporated with pectin.

Active edible films based on okara soluble dietary fiber (SDF), pectin, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) and thyme essential oil (TEO) were successfully prepared. We aimed to exploit biodegradable edible films and realize the full utilization of waste resources. The effects of different amounts of pectin on the properties and structural characterization of the composite film with or without TEO were studied using a solution casting evaporation method. In general, the addition of TEO can improve the properties of the composite membrane. Pectin was homogeneously distributed within the film

Tough and Functional Cross-linked Bioplastics from Sheep Wool Keratin.

Novel bioplastic films derived from wool keratins were prepared by protein solution in an alkaline mild oxidative method that splits disulphide (-S-S-) bonds. The native structure of the keratin macromolecules was partially modified upon extraction as revealed by the decrease of the β-sheet to α-helices/coils ratio but high molecular weight fractions (31, 22 and 13 KDa) was retained permitting film formation and plastic behaviour of films. Keratin films were plasticised with glycerol and sodium dodecyl sulphonic acid (SDS), which provided different hydrophobic character to bioplastics. Water c

Evaluation of the sensitization potential of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds using the direct peptide reactivity assay.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitization potential of 82 compounds classified as volatile and/or semi-volatile organic compounds using the direct peptide reactivity assay (DPRA), given that these chemical compounds have been detected frequently and at high concentrations in a national survey of Japanese indoor air pollution and other studies. The skin sensitization potential of 81 of these compounds was evaluable in our study; one compound co-eluted with cysteine peptide and was therefore not evaluable. Twenty-five of the evaluated compounds were classified as positive. Alth

Synthesis of degradable-polar-hydrophobic-ionic co-polymeric microspheres by membrane emulsion photopolymerization: In vitro and in vivo studies.

The synthesis of microspheres for tissue regeneration requires good control over the particle size and size distribution. This is particularly important when considering the immune response that may be triggered by the presence of particles in tissue. This report outlines the design of an injectable microsphere system using a low-inflammatory, degradable-polar-hydrophobic-ionic polyurethane, termed D-PHI, and investigates the system's performance in vitro and in vivo. Crosslinked polyurethane microspheres were prepared via a rapid and controlled process based on membrane emulsion and subsequen

Supramolecular co-assembly of cellulose acetate networks via interfacial hydrogen-bonding engineering for super-strong, high-barrier and multi-emissive intelligent packaging.

Developing eco-friendly and sustainable structural bioplastics from natural resources is a paramount trajectory to mitigate the environmental crises posed by petroleum-derived plastic waste. However, the inherent brittleness and poor gas-barrier properties of raw polysaccharides severely impede their practical applications in advanced packaging scenarios. Herein, an interfacial supramolecular co-assembly strategy is established to fabricate smart, biodegradable, and super-strong cellulose acetate structural films by introducing an ultra-low loading <2% of a tailored rigid chromophore, 1-aminoa
