[Congenital neck masses. Embryonic origin and diagnosis. Report of the CIREOL].

Various congenital cervical anomalies are found in the neck region including defects of the branchial apparatus (branchial, thymic and parathyroid anomalies) and vascular anomalies. They manifest as cystic masses, sinuses, fistulas and as ectopic glands. This multicentric retrospective imaging study done in 5 different radiological centers (4 adult radiological departments and 1 pediatric radiological department) shows the result in understanding the congenital cervical anomalies and include 63 patients. The age of the patients varied between 24 days-81 years with a mean age of 23 years. This

Second branchial cleft cyst: about 34 cases.

BACKGROUND: the amygdaloid cyst is a rare laterocervical cystic tumor arising from the second branchial cleft. It accounts for 2% of laterocervical tumors. AIM: analyze the anatomo-clinical characteristics and discuss the management and therapeutic indications of second branchial cleft cysts. METHODS: we report a 14-year retrospective study (2000-2013) concerning 34 cases of amygdaloid cysts diagnosted and treated at ENT department of Farhat Hached hospital of Sousse. RESULTS: The average age of our patients was 27 years with a sex ratio 0.8. Physical examination found a cervical mass in al

Expression of thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1) in extra thyroidal sites: papillary thyroid carcinoma of branchial cleft cysts and thyroglossal duct cysts and struma ovarii.

The thyroid-associated transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) is a nuclear tissue specific protein, found only in thyroid and thyroid tumors regardless of histologic type as well as in lung carcinomas. Most ectopic thyroid tissue are found along the thyroglossal duct tract and around the bilateral main lobes of thyroid glands. Ectopic thyroid tissue within a branchial cleft cyst is a rare abnormality and papillary carcinoma arising in this tissue is extremely rare. Thyroid tissue may also be found as one of the many components of teratoma, particularly those located in the ovary. The aim of this study

Thyroid transcription factor 1 expression in cystic lesions of the neck: an immunohistochemical investigation of thyroglossal duct cysts, branchial cleft cysts and metastatic papillary thyroid cancer.

Cervical metastases of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) are of particular diagnostic importance, because they can mimic branchiogenic cysts clinically and histopathologically when undergoing cystic change. Immunohistochemical stains for thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1), which are positive in thyroid cancers, are reported to be valuable in establishing diagnosis. However, TTF-1 may also be expressed in dysontogenetic cysts of the neck. Therefore, immunohistochemical stains for TTF-1 and thyroglobulin (TG) were performed on each of the ten thyroglossal duct cysts, branchial cleft cyst and ly

Treatment of branchial cleft cyst with intracystic injection of OK-432.

CONCLUSIONS: The data suggest that branchial cleft cyst (BCC) can be primarily treated with OK-432 sclerotherapy and only the remaining lesions with excision. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of sclerotherapy using OK-432 in the treatment of BCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We treated 12 BCC patients (3 males and 9 females; mean age 25 years) with OK-432 sclerotherapy at an outpatient clinic. The cystic fluids were aspirated and diagnosed by cytomorphology and DNA cytometric analysis to exclude malignancy. The fluid aspirated from the cyst was replaced with an equal volume of OK-432 solu

Management of anomalies of the third and fourth branchial pouches.

Third and fourth branchial pouch anomalies are rare and usually present as lateral neck masses, abscesses or with acute suppurative thyroiditis. An opening in the piriform sinus can be identified in most cases. We present four cases of fourth branchial pouch sinuses, one of a third branchial cyst and discuss our management. Cannulation of the sinus tract at laryngoscopy, followed by complete surgical excision, via a modified oblique thyrotomy above the cricothyroid joint after detaching the inferior constrictor was used to treat the fourth branchial pouch anomalies. This surgical approach adeq

Diagnosis and treatment of branchial cleft cysts and fistulae. A retrospective study of 183 patients.

A retrospective analysis of 183 patients undergoing surgical treatment for branchial cleft cysts and fistulae between 1970 and 1990 was carried out. There were 148 (80.8%) cases of branchial cleft cysts and 35 (19.2%) cases of branchial cleft fistulae. In patients with branchial cysts, the most frequent clinical presentation consisted of a left-sided, painless, cervical mass. Patients with a branchial fistula presented with persistent mucous discharge from a skin opening in the neck. The introduction of ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic nuclear resonance imaging has improved t

Fine needle aspiration cytology including the analysis of human papilloma virus (HPV) DNA enhances the diagnostic workup of solitary cystic neck lesions in a population with a high incidence of HPV positive oropharyngeal cancer.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Distinguishing branchial cleft cysts (BrCCs) from cystic metastases of human papillomavirus (HPV) positive tonsillar or base of tongue squamous cell carcinoma and cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is challenging. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) from cystic metastasis can be nonrepresentative, while reactive squamous cells from BrCC can be atypical. It is unclear whether benign characteristics and the absence of HPV-DNA in FNAC can enhance distinguishing BrCC from a cystic metastasis; therefore, we investigated here. PATIENTS/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Morphology and H

Diagnosis and treatment of cervical branchial cleft cysts based on the material from the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, Medical University in Łódź and literature review.

UNLABELLED: Cervical branchial cleft cysts are relatively common tumors of the neck that should be distinguished from an epidermoid cyst, hygroma, hemangioma, lymphangioma, lymphadenitis, and metastatic papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland. Infected cysts might be misdiagnosed as a recurrent abscess. The aim of the study was to present current views concerning diagnosis and treatment of cervical branchial cleft cysts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data and histopathological results obtained from 49 patients (18 women and 31 men) admitted to the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, due to l

Thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1) and p63 expression in two primary thyroid papillary carcinomas of branchial cleft cysts.

Malignant lateral cervical cysts can be related to metastatic tumors or rarely to primary thyroid carcinoma arising in branchial cleft cysts. This study evaluates the expression of thyroid-associated transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) and p63 in three branchial cleft cysts and in two primary thyroid papillary carcinoma of branchial cleft cysts. TTF-1 was negative in the nuclei of the lining epithelia of branchial cleft cysts, but positive in the adjacent normal thyroid tissue, while TTF-1 was positive in the nuclei of the lining epithelia and in the nuclei of the papillae and follicles in branchia

Functional superficial parotidectomy.

PURPOSE: To clinically test a new type of parotid surgery termed functional superficial parotidectomy (FSP) to preserve the function of the residual gland. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixteen human parotid specimens were dissected, and 19 patients underwent FSP. RESULTS: It was shown that 91.4% of the main parotid ducts were found deep to the surface of the facial nerve. Physical examination, sialography, and scintigraphy showed that function of the residual gland was well preserved by FSP. CONCLUSION: A comparison of the main complications between FSP and conservative superficial parotidectomy s
