[Extracapsular extraction of the crystalline lens].

From June 1, 1990 to September 1, 1995 we have operated within our department o Ophthalmology 759 eyes at 714 patients using the method of Extra-Capsular Extraction (EEC). From these 759 eyes, 242 (31.88%) were subjects of an artificial lens implant, 239 eyes were subjects of posterior chamber implant and 4 of anterior chamber. The used technique was the classical EEC one. The patients' age was between 8 and 93 years, with the maximal frequencies at the groups of 60-70 years (43.83%) and 70-80 years (35.57%). Considering the type of cataract we have operated 12 (1.58%) traumatic cataracts, 81

Association between aqueous humor cytokines and posterior capsular opacification in patients with high myopia.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) remains a significant complication following cataract surgery, with an unclear pathogenesis in patients with high myopia. This study investigated the aqueous humor (AH) cytokine profile in patients with cataracts and high myopia and its relationship with the development of PCO. METHODS: AH samples were collected from 36 patients undergoing cataract surgery, including 18 with high myopia (axial length > 26 mm) and 18 age- and sex-matched controls. The levels of 19 PCO-associated cytokines were measured using a multiplex immunoassay, and PCO se

Trifocal intraocular lenses versus bifocal intraocular lenses after cataract extraction among participants with presbyopia.

BACKGROUND: Presbyopia occurs when the lens of the eyes loses its elasticity leading to loss of accommodation. The lens may also progress to develop cataract, affecting visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. One option of care for individuals with presbyopia and cataract is the use of multifocal or extended depth of focus intraocular lens (IOL) after cataract surgery. Although trifocal and bifocal IOLs are designed to restore three and two focal points respectively, trifocal lens may be preferable because it restores near, intermediate, and far vision, and may also provide a greater range of

Proteomic Changes of Glycolipid Pathways in Age-Related, Diabetic, and Post-Vitrectomy Cataracts.

Background: Alterations in glycolipid and glycosphingolipid pathways lead to compromised cell membranes and may be involved in cataract formation. However, the exact role of glycolipids in lens opacification is not completely understood. The aim of the current study is to investigate proteome complexity and the role of glycolipid and glycosphingolipid pathways in cataract formation. Methods: The anterior capsule and phacoemulsification (phaco) cassette contents were collected during cataract surgery from eleven participants with diabetic cataract (DC), twelve participants with age-related cata

The Role of Metalloproteinases and Their Tissue Inhibitors on Ocular Diseases: Focusing on Potential Mechanisms.

Eye diseases are associated with visual impairment, reduced quality of life, and may even lead to vision loss. The efficacy of available treatment of eye diseases is not satisfactory. The unique environment of the eye related to anatomical and physiological barriers and constraints limits the bioavailability of existing agents. In turn, complex ethiopathogenesis of ocular disorders that used drugs generally are non-disease specific and do not act causally. Therefore, there is a need for the development of a new therapeutic and preventive approach. It seems that matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)

Effects of Topical Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors on the Olfactory Sense.

OBJECTIVES: The sense of smell plays an important role in daily life. Olfactory impairment can significantly affect an individual's quality of life. Topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are commonly used to treat elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). One potential side effect of these drugs is a loss of the sense of smell. This study is an examination of changes in olfactory function in patients who used dorzolamide and brinzolamide to control IOP after a laser capsulotomy. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with posterior capsule opacification were included in the study. Sniffin' Sticks (Burgha

Ophthalmological finding in a patient with lowe syndrome.

The authors present the ophthamological finding in a patient who at the age of 4.5 months was admitted due to a finding of total bilateral congenital cataract. The patient was observed by a neurologist for central hypotonia and mental retardation. Upon a complex examination of the patient, suspicion of Lowe syndrome was stated, which was confirmed by a metabolic examination and also by genetic tests. Upon an examination of the family, a genetic defect (mutation of OCRL1 gene) was confirmed also in the mother of the patient. A mild subcapsular opacification was present in the mother, beneath th

Surgical interventions for bilateral congenital cataract.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataracts are opacities of the lens in one or both eyes of children, causing a reduction in vision bad enough to require surgery. Cataract is the largest preventable cause of visual loss in childhood. Paediatric cataracts provide different challenges to those in adults. Intense inflammation, amblyopia and posterior capsule opacification can affect results of treatment. Two treatments commonly considered for congenital cataract are lensectomy and lens aspiration. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to assess the effects of surgical treatments for bilateral symmet

Antibody-Conjugated, DNA-Based Nanocarriers Intercalated with Doxorubicin Eliminate Myofibroblasts in Explants of Human Lens Tissue.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) occurs in some adults and most children following cataract surgery. The fibrotic form of PCO arises, in part, from migratory, contractile myofibroblasts that deform the lens capsule and impair vision. In short-term cultures of human anterior lens tissue, myofibroblasts emerge from Myo/Nog cells that are identified with the G8 monoclonal antibody and by their expression of the MyoD transcription factor and bone morphogenetic protein inhibitor noggin. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that targeted depletion of Myo/Nog cells with the G8 monoclonal anti

Distinct transcriptional regulation of the Wnt and TGFβ signaling families associated with wound healing and fibrotic outcomes to lens injury.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a fibrotic complication of cataract surgery caused by aberrant repair of residual lens cells. It remains unclear how the lens injury response shifts toward a pathological repair process. Here, we performed a transcriptional analysis of two major pro-fibrotic pathways, the TGF-β superfamily and Wnt signaling pathways to determine how they are differentially regulated during regenerative wound healing versus fibrosis in a lens injury model. For these studies, RNA sequencing was performed on an ex vivo lens explant system that models post-surgical healing
