A monoclonal antibody (SN1) identifies a subpopulation of avian sensory neurons whose distribution is correlated with axial level.

We have produced a monoclonal antibody, designated SN1, which binds to the surfaces of a subpopulation of avian sensory neurons, but not to other neurons of the peripheral or central nervous systems. The proportion of SN1(+) neurons in brachial and lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia (DRG), which innervate the wings and legs respectively, is low (30-40%), compared to the proportion (80-90%) in the lower thoracic DRG. SN1 immunoreactive fibers project to laminae I and II of the spinal cord dorsal horn, and are seen in the skin, but not the deeper tissues of older embryos. On the basis of the time o

Attempts to identify the source of avian vacuolar myelinopathy for waterbirds.

Attempts were made to reproduce avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM) in a number of test animals in order to determine the source of the causative agent for birds and to find a suitable animal model for future studies. Submerged vegetation, plankton, invertebrates, forage fish, and sediments were collected from three lakes with ongoing outbreaks of AVM and fed to American coots (Fulica americana), mallard ducks and ducklings (Anas platyrhynchos), quail (Coturnix japonica), and laboratory mice either via gavage or ad libitum. Tissues from AVM-affected coots with brain lesions were fed to ducklings

Optimization of dietary methionine requirements under aflatoxicosis in quail chicks using response surface modeling.

This study aimed to determine the optimal dietary methionine (Met) requirement for quail chicks exposed to different concentrations of aflatoxin B₁ (AFB) using response surface and quadratic polynomial modeling. Previously, excess Met was shown to alleviate the adverse effects of AFB on performance, liver function, and immunity in quail. Here, the same experimental dataset was reanalyzed to quantify Met-AFB interactions and define nutrient optima. Three levels of dietary Met (5.0, 6.0, and 7.0 g/kg) and three levels of AFB (0.0, 2.5, and 5.0 ppm) were modeled across performance, biochemical, i

Angiostatic activity of obtustatin as alpha1beta1 integrin inhibitor in experimental melanoma growth.

The presented results show the effect of targeting of collagen receptor, alpha1beta1 integrin expressed on the endothelial cells on the development of experimental melanoma and pathological angiogenesis. Obtustatin, a snake venom KTS-disintegrin, was applied as a specific inhibitor of this integrin. This low molecular weight peptide revealed a potent therapeutic effect on melanoma progression in 2 animal systems, mouse and quail. Its oncostatic effect was related to the inhibition of angiogenesis. Obtustatin inhibited the neovascularization ratio on the CAM embryo of quail, which was pathologi

Migration and distribution of circumpharyngeal crest cells in the chick embryo. Formation of the circumpharyngeal ridge and E/C8+ crest cells in the vertebrate head region.

The cardiac neural crest is located in a transitional area on the neuraxis between trunk and cephalic regions and gives rise to both the dorsolateral and ventrolateral crest cell populations. Around stage 18 of chick development, a mass of E/C8+ cells surrounds the postotic pharyngeal arches and forms a crescent-shaped arch, termed the circumpharyngeal ridge. Using immunohistochemistry and quail-chick chimeras, it was determined that the E/C8+ cell mass located in the circumpharyngeal ridge derives from the dorsolateral component of the cardiac neural crest. The ventrolateral cell population o

Japanese quail and human acid maltase deficiency: a comparative study.

A morphological study was carried out on the skeletal muscle of a mutant Japanese quail with acid maltase deficiency (AMD). The affected quails began to experience difficulty in lifting their wings about 6 weeks after hatching. Four weeks after hatching, before symptoms appeared, alpha-1, 4-glucosidase activity in skeletal muscle was decreased to less than 10% of the control level, and muscle fibers possessed many vacuoles containing periodic acid Schiff (PAS) positive material which was digested by diastase, and showed high acid phosphatase activity. Although both red and white muscles were i

Blood sampling from the venous occipital sinus of birds.

Venous occipital sinus blood sampling was demonstrated to be an effective nonlethal method in all species tested including ducks, geese, Chukar partridge, Japanese quail, pea-fowl, pheasants, parakeets, turkeys, and chickens. Maximum blood volume obtained from the occipital sinus of 1-day-old chicks equalled the volume obtained by cardiac puncture and exceeded the volume collected by decapitation. Venous occipital sinus puncture was successfully used to rapidly collect several successive blood samples from individual birds, thus indicating the method's utility for serial blood sampling. Allicin mitigates fumonisin B1-induced kidney toxicity in quails: Modulating fibrosis, NF-κB signaling pathway, and mitochondrial damage.

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a common mycotoxin, which is a water-soluble metabolite produced through the metabolism of Fusarium verticillioides and Fusarium proliferator. Crops and feedstuffs are widely contaminated by FB1 from the environment, posing risks to livestock and human health. Currently, there is no therapeutic approach available for FB1 intoxication. Allicin, an organic sulfur compound extracted from garlic, exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, and intestinal regulatory properties. However, investigations into allicin's role in allev

A ryanodine receptor-dependent Ca(i)(2+) asymmetry at Hensen's node mediates avian lateral identity.

In mouse, the establishment of left-right (LR) asymmetry requires intracellular calcium (Ca(i)(2+)) enrichment on the left of the node. The use of Ca(i)(2+) asymmetry by other vertebrates, and its origins and relationship to other laterality effectors are largely unknown. Additionally, the architecture of Hensen's node raises doubts as to whether Ca(i)(2+) asymmetry is a broadly conserved mechanism to achieve laterality. We report here that the avian embryo uses a left-side enriched Ca(i)(2+) asymmetry across Hensen's node to govern its lateral identity. Elevated Ca(i)(2+) was first detected a

The origin of the subepicardial mesenchyme in the avian embryo: an immunohistochemical and quail-chick chimera study.

It has been proposed that the subepicardial mesenchymal cells (SEMC) originate from the primitive epicardium and also from migration of extracardiac mesenchyme from the liver area. We have studied the possibility of an origin of SEMC through transformation of the proepicardial mesothelium, as well as the potential of the early proepicardium to generate epicardium and SEMC in quail-chick chimeras. The study was carried out in quail and chick embryos between HH16 and HH29 stages. Most proepicardial cells, mesothelial as well as mesenchymal, were cytokeratin and vimentin immunoreactive, suggestin

Effect of lead intoxication on calcium homeostasis and calcium-mediated cell function: a review.

The interaction between lead and essential metals is a complex, well recognized, but poorly understood phenomenon. Dietary deficiencies or excesses of certain essential metals may alter the absorption, elimination, or dose response of lead. Lead, in turn, may alter the homeostasis and function of essential metals. This review will be limited to the effect of lead on calcium, an essential metal with elaborate systemic and cellular homeostatic mechanisms and innumerable second messenger and coupling-factor functions. Lead may ultimately perturb calcium-regulated or calcium-mediated functions (a)

[The calorigenic effect of glucagon].

The calorigenic action of glucagon was studied in several species by measuring its effect on the oxygen comsumption. The calorigenic effect was most pronounced in the quail and also evident in young adult rats of two different strains but not in mice and guinea pigs. The influence of various drugs on the calorigenic effect of glucagon was investigated in rats. Ganglionic blocking agents (hexamethonium, mecamylamine, chlorisondamine) as well as adrenergic blocking drugs (propranolol, butoxamine, phentolamine) greatly reduced the glucagon-induced calorigenesis but after pretreatment with reserpi

Graded Levels of Dietary Valine in Protein-Restricted Diets: Effects on Reproductive Performance and Tissue Morphology in Laying Japanese Quail.

BACKGROUND: Valine (Val) is an essential branched-chain amino acid that plays a critical role in protein synthesis and reproductive function in poultry. However, the optimal dietary Val requirement for laying Japanese quail fed reduced-protein diets remains insufficiently defined. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effects of graded dietary Val levels on reproductive performance, egg quality, hatchability, and hepatic and ovarian histomorphometry in laying Japanese quail under protein-restricted conditions. METHODS: A total of 375 Japanese quail (300 females and 75 males; 47-98 days of age)

A higher inherent trait for fearfulness is associated with increased anxiety-like behaviours and diazepam sensitivity in Japanese quail.

This study tested whether lines of Japanese quails divergently selected for a fear response, the tonic immobility, might constitute a reliable bird model for studying anxiety. Previous studies demonstrated that the selection modifies the general underlying emotionality of the birds rather than exerting its effect only on tonic immobility. The behavioural effects of intraperitoneal injections of diazepam, an anxiolytic drug, were assessed in two lines of quail selected either for their short (STI) or long (LTI) duration of tonic immobility. Effects of diazepam were examined in two tests used fo

The embryonic pineal body as a multipotent organ.

The repertoire of differentiating potency of mammalian and avian pineal cells has been examined utilizing cell culture technique. Skeletal muscle fibers are differentiated from pineal cells of the rat under the usual culture condition and from those of quail under hypertonic conditions. Myogenesis of pineal cells may be explained from the ontogeny of the pineal body. Anlagen of a pineal body are situated in bilateral cephalic neural folds, which also supply multipotent neural crest cells. In some conditions, almost all quail pineal cells are able to differentiate into pigmented epithelial cell

Modifications of glucocorticoid receptors mRNA expression in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in response to early-life stress in female Japanese quail.

Stress exposure during early-life development can programme individual brain and physiology. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is one of the primary targets of this programming, which is generally associated with a hyperactive HPA axis, indicative of a reduced negative-feedback. This reduced feedback efficiency usually results from a reduced level of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and/or the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) within the HPA axis. However, a few studies have shown that early-life stress exposure results in an attenuated physiological stress response, suggesting an en

Androgen biosynthesis in the quail brain.

We have demonstrated that the quail brain possesses the cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme (cytochrome P450scc) and 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/delta(5)-delta(4)-isomerase (3beta-HSD) and produces pregnenolone, pregnenolone sulfate and progesterone from cholesterol. We have also demonstrated the expression of cytochrome P450 17alpha-hydroxylase/c17,20-lyase (P450(17alpha,lyase)) and the conversion of progesterone to 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone in the same avian species. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate androgen biosynthesis from progesterone in the avian bra

The role of the epicardium and neural crest as extracardiac contributors to coronary vascular development.

At species-specific times in embryonic development, the pro-epicardial organ appears as an outcropping of the mesothelial body wall, near the sinus venosus-liver region. The pro-epicardial vesicles attach to the myocardium, flatten, and join to form the epicardium. The epicardium shows epithelial-mesenchymal transformation: cells detach from the epithelium, fill the subepicardial space, and invade the heart tube. Epicardium-derived cells migrate as far as the core of the endocardial cushions, which differentiate into the atrioventricular valve leaflets. In the cardiac wall, other epicardium-de
