Pathological gambling and alcohol dependence: neural disturbances in reward and loss avoidance processing.

Pathological gambling (PG) shares clinical characteristics such as craving and loss of control with substance use disorders and is thus considered a behavioral addiction. While functional alterations in the mesolimbic reward system have been correlated with craving and relapse in substance use disorders, only a few studies have examined this brain circuit in PG, and no direct comparison has been conducted so far. Thus, we investigated the neuronal correlates of reward processing in PG in contrast to alcohol-dependent (AD) patients and healthy subjects. Eighteen PG patients, 15 AD patients and

Declarative memory is critical for sustained advantageous complex decision-making.

Previous studies have reported conflicting evidence concerning the contribution of declarative memory to advantageous decision-making on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). One study, in which the measurement of psychophysiology during the task necessitated a 10-s delay between card selections, found that six participants with amnesia due to hippocampal damage failed to develop a preference for advantageous decks over disadvantageous decks [Gutbrod, K., Krouzel, C., Hofer, H., Muri, R., Perrig, W., & Ptak, R. (2006). Decision-making in amnesia: Do advantageous decisions require conscious knowledge o

Prenatal exposure to nicotine impairs performance of the 5-choice serial reaction time task in adult rats.

Cigarette smoking is associated with a wide variety of adverse reproductive outcomes, including increased infant mortality and decreased birth weight. Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke, of which nicotine is a major teratogenic component, has also been linked to the acceleration of the risk for different psychiatric disorders, including conduct disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Whether this increased risk is influenced by the direct effects of gestational nicotine exposure on the developing fetus remains uncertain. In this study we provide experimental evidence for

Factors associated with post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage.

Despite the otolaryngologist's most diligent efforts to prevent it, hemorrhage is the most common, albeit sporadic, significant complication of tonsillectomy. For this retrospective study of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage rates, we examined the charts of 430 consecutive tonsillectomy patients who had been operated on by one of two general otolaryngologists at our institution. The two surgeons used the same removal technique (cold dissection and snare), but slightly different methods of hemostasis. We found that the overall bleeding rate was 4%; the primary (< 24 hr) hemorrhage rate was 0.23%, a

The influence of satellite populations of emerald ash borer on projected economic costs in U.S. communities, 2010-2020.

The invasion spread of the emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is characterized by the formation of satellite populations that expand and coalesce with the continuously invading population front. As of January 2010, satellite infestations have been detected in 13 states and two Canadian provinces. Understanding how newly established satellite populations may affect economic costs can help program managers to justify and design prevention and control strategies. We estimate the economic costs caused by EAB for the 10-yr period from 2010 to 2020 for scenar

Episodic Future Thinking: A Behavioral Intervention to Promote Weight Loss in Breast Cancer Survivors (Alliance A21-Pilot10).

PURPOSE: Obesity in breast cancer survivors (BCS) increases mortality, but lifestyle interventions have mixed outcomes. Episodic future thinking (EFT), in which individuals mentally simulate positive personal future-oriented events, has shown to reduce body weight (BW) and delay discounting (DD; the tendency to value delayed rewards less). How EFT affects BW reductions in BCS is unknown. This phase II trial evaluated the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of EFT in reducing BW in BCS with overweight/obesity. METHODS: Women with nonmetastatic BC who completed treatment with a BMI ≥25 kg/m2 w

Relations between impulsivity and drinking in adults with alcohol use disorder during recovery: A longitudinal observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a multifaceted construct robustly associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Few studies, however, have examined its relations with drinking during a recovery attempt, and those that have typically used coarse measurements with few follow-up periods. This study examined prospective and reciprocal relations between multiple indices of impulsivity and drinking over a 1-year period among adults with AUD making a significant recovery attempt. METHODS: Participants (N = 501, Mage = 41.4, 42.5% Male, 79% White) were enrolled at two sites. Longitudinal trajectories of alc

Investigating the effects of orexin receptor 1 antagonism on decision making under uncertainty.

Orexins/hypocretins are neuropeptides produced by several thousand neurons in the lateral hypothalamus. They project widely through the central nervous system where they release orexins which bind to two regionally selective G-protein coupled receptors: OX1R and OX2R. Orexins are well known as regulators of the sleep/wake cycle, however, recent investigations into orexinergic modulation of feeding and drug-seeking behaviour suggest they also play a role in reward processing and decision making. In the present study, we investigated the effects of OX1R antagonism on goal-directed decision makin

Search for solutions, learning, simulation, and choice processes in suicidal behavior.

Suicide may be viewed as an unfortunate outcome of failures in decision processes. Such failures occur when the demands of a crisis exceed a person's capacity to (i) search for options, (ii) learn and simulate possible futures, and (iii) make advantageous value-based choices. Can individual-level decision deficits and biases drive the progression of the suicidal crisis? Our overview of the evidence on this question is informed by clinical theory and grounded in reinforcement learning and behavioral economics. Cohort and case-control studies provide strong evidence that limited cognitive capaci

Randomized controlled trial of d-cycloserine in cocaine dependence: Effects on contingency management and cue-induced cocaine craving in a naturalistic setting.

Cocaine dependence constitutes a significant public health concern. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial tested a novel approach to reducing cocaine use among cocaine-dependent individuals with d-cycloserine, a drug known to enhance learning and some learning-based therapies. Urine samples and cocaine craving were assessed across three phases: induction (Weeks 1-2), treatment (Weeks 3-5; urinalysis-based contingency management plus exposure therapy), and posttreatment (Weeks 6-7). During the treatment phase, either 50 mg of d-cycloserine or placebo was administered after del

The structure of psychopathology in adolescence and its common personality and cognitive correlates.

The traditional view that mental disorders are distinct, categorical disorders has been challenged by evidence that disorders are highly comorbid and exist on a continuum (e.g., Caspi et al., 2014; Tackett et al., 2013). The first objective of this study was to use structural equation modeling to model the structure of psychopathology in an adolescent community-based sample (N = 2,144) including conduct disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, substance use, anxiety, depression, phobias, and

Divergent responses of the amygdala and ventral striatum predict stress-related problem drinking in young adults: possible differential markers of affective and impulsive pathways of risk for alcohol use disorder.

Prior work suggests that there may be two distinct pathways of alcohol use disorder (AUD) risk: one associated with positive emotion enhancement and behavioral impulsivity, and another associated with negative emotion relief and coping. We sought to map these two pathways onto individual differences in neural reward and threat processing assessed using blood-oxygen-level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging in a sample of 759 undergraduate students (426 women, mean age 19.65±1.24 years) participating in the Duke Neurogenetics Study. We demonstrate that problem drinking is highest in

Dopaminergic modulation of risk-based decision making.

Psychopharmacological studies have implicated the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system in the mediation of cost/benefit evaluations about delay or effort-related costs associated with larger rewards. However, the role of DA in risk-based decision making remains relatively unexplored. The present study investigated the effects of systemic manipulations of DA transmission on risky choice using a probabilistic discounting task. Over discrete trials, rats chose between two levers; a press on the 'small/certain' lever always delivered one reward pellet, whereas a press on the other, 'large/risky' lever

Medical Gaslighting and Lyme Disease: The Patient Experience.

Even though there are approximately half a million new cases of Lyme disease in the US annually, according to the CDC, it is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, which can result in a chronic, multisystemic condition. Lyme disease is a recognized public health threat and is a designated "notifiable disease". As such, Lyme disease is mandated to be reported by the CDC. Despite this, both acute and chronic Lyme disease (CLD) have been relegated to the category of "contested illnesses", which can lead to medical gaslighting. By analyzing results from an online survey of respondents with Lyme diseas

Disadvantageous decision-making in borderline personality disorder: Partial support from a meta-analytic review.

To achieve long-term goals, organisms evaluate outcomes and expected consequences of their behaviors. Unfavorable decisions maintain many symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD); therefore, a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying decision-making in BPD is needed. In this review, the current literature comparing decision-making in patients with BPD versus healthy controls is analyzed. Twenty-eight empirical studies were identified through a structured literature search. The effect sizes from studies applying comparable experimental tasks were analyzed. It was found that (1

The neuroscience of impulsive and self-controlled decisions.

Impulsiveness and self-control are two antagonistic choice patterns. Whereas impulsive decisions can be exemplified by the preference for a small, immediate over a large, delayed reward, self-control can be characterised as the opposite preference order. This review focuses on current developments in investigating the neuroscience of impulsiveness and self-control, with particular emphasis on the neuroanatomy, psychopharmacology, and electrophysiology of this class of decision making. The role of the avian forebrain in representing and processing temporal reward discounting - a chief psycholog

Remotely delivered episodic future thinking and contingency management for smoking cessation: A randomized feasibility trial among military veterans in the United States.

Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of death and disease in the United States and a significant concern for U.S. military veterans, who use tobacco at higher rates than nonveterans. Veterans face multiple obstacles to achieving long-term abstinence from smoking and might benefit from remotely delivered, novel approaches to smoking cessation treatment. This study employed reinforcer pathology theory to design a novel, accessible treatment approach that combined episodic future thinking with contingency management (EFT + CM) in a remotely delivered treatment for military veterans. Veterans (n =

Differentiating e-cigarette use and dual use: the role of impulsivity.

RATIONALE: Elevated impulsivity has been associated with vaping, but research has not explored potential differences between e-cigarette-only and dual users of cigarettes and e-cigarettes across multiple dimensions of trait and state impulsivity. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the differential role impulsivity may play when vaping and smoking occur in isolation, versus when in combination. METHODS: Trait impulsivity (UPPS-P) and behavioural impulsivity (monetary delay discounting, cigarette choice, vaping choice, and drug-cue Go/No-go tasks) were compared across non-users (n = 27), cigarette

Urban noise-induced stress and decision-making: effects of high-intensity acoustic exposure on risk-based and intertemporal choices.

INTRODUCTION: Urban noise is one of the most pervasive environmental stressors in Latin American cities, yet its specific effects on complex cognitive processes such as decision-making remain insufficiently studied. This study examined the effects of acute exposure to high-intensity urban noise (85-95 dB[A]) on risk-based and intertemporal decision-making in healthy adults under controlled laboratory conditions, while characterizing the autonomic and subjective stress response and exploring its relationship with cognitive performance. METHODS: A quasi-experimental between-groups design was em
