Prior heat stress: effect on subsequent 15-min time trial performance in the heat.

UNLABELLED: The impact of prior heat stress on subsequent aerobic exercise-heat performance has not been studied. PURPOSE: To determine whether prior heat stress degrades subsequent aerobic exercise performance in the heat. METHODS: Eighteen nonheat acclimated males were trained (four practice trials) on an aerobic exercise performance test in 22 degrees C and then divided into two (n = 8) groups. One group (EUHPH; (.)VO2peak = 44 +/- 7 mL x kg x min(-1)) was tested after 90 min of recovery (in 22 degrees C) from 3 h of intermittent light-intensity (<30% (.)VO2peak) exercise-heat (50 degrees

Reliability and validity assessment of the hand activity level threshold limit value and strain index using expert ratings of mono-task jobs.

This study evaluated two subjective assessment methods for physical work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WMSD) risk factors. A total of 567 participants from 12 companies in the manufacturing and health care industries were evaluated using the hand activity level (HAL) threshold limit value (TLV) and the Strain Index. Inter-rater reliability comparisons were performed on 125 selected cyclic tasks, with one novice and three experienced raters. Predictive validity was assessed by evaluation of relationships between measured exposure parameters and diagnosed WMSDs of the hand/wrist and elbow. H

Increased vagal tone during winter in subsyndromal seasonal affective disorder.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is characterized by recurrent winter depression with summer remissions and/or hypomania. Further symptoms include hypersomnia, increased appetite, weight gain, fatigue, and social withdrawal, which may indicate autonomic changes during winter. METHODS: Measurements of respiratory sinus arrhythmia, heart rate (HR), and skin conductance level (SCL) were taken from 32 participants in subsyndromal SAD and control groups (eight male and eight female subjects in each group) in autumn and winter to determine any change in autonomic function. Measures wer

Effect of push frequency on the economy of wheelchair racers.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to examine the effect of varying push frequency on pushing economy (oxygen uptake at a given speed). METHODS: Eight male wheelchair racers completed a series of exercise bouts on a wheelchair ergometer (Bromking Turbo Trainer, Bromakin, UK) at 6.58 m x s(-1). Initially, subjects self-selected their freely chosen push frequency (FCF); this was followed by 4 random trials pushing at 60, 80, 120, and 140% of this FCF. Steady state VO2 was determined using Douglas bags, and heart rate was recorded by telemetry. After each condition, a small capillary blood sample

High-Intensity Interval Training in Individuals with Subacute Motor Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury: An Explorative Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes major functional limitations. The subacute phase offers a critical window to optimize recovery. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) may improve cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in chronic complete SCI, but evidence in subacute incomplete SCI is limited. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of 6 weeks of HIIT on CRF compared with usual care in subacute motor incomplete SCI. METHODS: In this explorative randomized controlled trial, participants with subacute incomplete SCI were assigned to HIIT or usual care. HIIT involved 2 to 3 weekly arm-ergomet

Exhaled breath performance in diagnosing ischemic heart disease utilizing a machine learning model.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) remains the leading global cause of mortality and morbidity. Current diagnostic approaches face significant limitations in accessibility, cost, invasiveness, and accuracy, creating an urgent need for innovative non-invasive screening methods. To evaluate the ability of a machine learning (ML) model based on dynamic exhaled breath volatile organic compound (VOC) patterns to detect stress-induced myocardial perfusion defects, used here as the study reference outcome related to IHD. This prospective single-center study enrolled 80 participants (31 with stress-induced

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing: does measured peak O2 reflect a valid peak O2 in patients with hemiparetic stroke?

BACKGROUND: The relationships between cardiopulmonary exercise testing(CPET) variables at submaximal and peak efforts across severities of mobility and hemiparesis in patients with stroke are crucial for interpretation but unexplored. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that patients with more severe neurological deficits are likely to exhibit a lower peak respiratory exchange ratio(pRER). Moreover, individuals with lower pRER experience greater limitations at peak performance compared to those with higher pRER, while their submaximal performance remains relatively unaffected. METHODS: This retrospe

Eccentric Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage Reduces Gross Efficiency.

INTRODUCTION: The effect of eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) on cycling efficiency is unknown. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of EIMD on gross and delta efficiency and the cardiopulmonary responses to cycle ergometry. METHODS: Twenty-one recreational athletes performed cycling at 70%, 90%, and 110% of the gas exchange threshold (GET) under control conditions (Control) and 24 h following an eccentric damaging protocol (Damage). Knee extensor isometric maximal voluntary contraction, potentiated twitch ( Qtw,pot ), and voluntary activation were assessed befo

The effects of water temperature on cerebral blood flow during aquatic exercise.

PURPOSE: Recent studies suggest that episodic increases in cerebral blood flow (CBF) may contribute to the improvement in brain health associated with exercise training. Optimising CBF during exercise may enhance this benefit. Water immersion in ~ 30-32 °C augments CBF at rest and during exercise; however, the impact of water temperature on the CBF response has not been investigated. We hypothesised that cycle ergometry in water would increase CBF compared to land-based exercise, and that warm water would attenuate the CBF benefits. METHODS: Eleven young heathy participants (nine males; 23.8

Right Ventricle Mechanics and Function during Stress in Patients with Asymptomatic Primary Moderate to Severe Mitral Regurgitation and Preserved Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction.

Background and objectives. Mitral regurgitation (MR) is usually dynamic and increasing with exertion. Stress may provoke symptoms, cause the progression of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and unmask subclinical changes of the left and right ventricle function. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes of right ventricle (RV) functional parameters during stress and to find out determinants of RV function in patients with MR. Materials and methods. We performed a prospective study that included patients with asymptomatic primary moderate to severe MR and preserved left ventricular (LV) ejection

Shift Work Including Night Work and Long Working Hours in Industrial Plants Increases the Risk of Atherosclerosis.

There is an abundance of literature reporting an association between shift work and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Few studies have examined early manifestation of CVD using advanced modern methodology. We established a group of 65 shift workers and 29 day workers (controls) in two industrial plants. For the shift workers, the shift schedule includes rotating shifts with day, evening and nightshifts, some day and nightshifts lasting for 12 h. The current paper describes cross-sectional data in a study running for three years. We collected background data by questionnaire and measured blood pres

Abnormal submaximal cardiopulmonary exercise parameters predict impaired peak exercise performance in sickle cell anemia patients.

PURPOSE: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) patients frequently have many comorbidities, including diastolic dysfunction (DD) and exercise intolerance. SCA patients often cannot reach maximal effort on exercise testing; little is known regarding whether submaximal exercise parameters can predict abnormal maximal exercise results in SCA patients and if there are any possible associations with DD. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study was performed in SCA patients. All patients had a resting cardiac MRI (CMR), cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) with cycle ergometry using a ramp protocol, and an ech

Functional Capacity Is Affected by Younger Age of Repair in Tetralogy of Fallot Patients But Not by Era of Repair.

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is widely used to assess functional capacity in patients with tetralogy of Fallot after surgical repair. Little is known regarding the impact of age at the time of primary complete repair and surgical era effect on exercise capacity. METHODS: A retrospective, single-center chart review was done from 1976 to 2016 on pediatric patients with tetralogy of Fallot who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing with cycle ergometry utilizing the James protocol and were then sorted by repair before/after 1990 and by age of complete repair before/after one

Impaired cardiac output during exercise in adults operated for ventricular septal defect in childhood: a hitherto unrecognised pathophysiological response.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have demonstrated that surgical ventricular septal defect closure in childhood is associated with reduced functional capacity and disruption of the right ventricular force-frequency relationship during exercise. To further describe long-term cardiac function, we performed a non-invasive assessment of cardiac index during exercise in adults having undergone surgery for ventricular septal defect in early childhood. METHODS: A total of 20 patients (surgical age 2.1±1.4 years, age at examination 22.1±2.2 years) and 20 healthy, matched controls (23.4±2.1 years at examina

Reduced fitness and abnormal cardiopulmonary responses to maximal exercise testing in children and young adults with sickle cell anemia.

Physiologic contributors to reduced exercise capacity in individuals with sickle cell anemia (SCA) are not well understood. The objective of this study was to characterize the cardiopulmonary response to maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and determine factors associated with reduced exercise capacity among children and young adults with SCA. A cross-sectional cohort of 60 children and young adults (mean 15.1 ± 3.4 years) with hemoglobin SS or S/β(0) thalassemia and 30 matched controls (mean 14.6 ± 3.5 years) without SCA or sickle cell trait underwent maximal CPET by a graded, sym

Changes in the endurance shuttle walk test in COPD patients with chronic respiratory failure after pulmonary rehabilitation: the minimal important difference obtained with anchor- and distribution-based method.

BACKGROUND: Although the endurance shuttle walk test (ESWT) has proven to be responsive to change in exercise capacity after pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) for COPD, the minimally important difference (MID) has not yet been established. We aimed to establish the MID of the ESWT in patients with severe COPD and chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure following PR. METHODS: Data were derived from a randomized controlled trial, investigating the value of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation added to PR. Fifty-five patients with stable COPD, GOLD stage IV, with chronic respiratory failure wer
