A modified technique for retention of orbital prosthesis.

An orbital defect (congenital or acquired) causes severe facial asymmetry and disfigurement, which results in psychological and social disturbances to the patient. It becomes a challenging task for a maxillofacial prosthodontist to fabricate a prosthesis that replicates the healthy side of the face. Success of the prosthesis depends primarily on satisfactory retention of the same. This clinical report illustrates rehabilitation of a patient with an orbital defect by fabricating a hollow orbital prosthesis, utilizing anatomical undercuts for retention using an acrylic resin template relined by

Lessons Learnt From 25 Years of Endophthalmitis: Causes, Microbiology and Visual Outcome Trends.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to study the trends in microbiology, precipitating causes and outcomes of endophthalmitis in Victoria, Australia, over a 25-year period. To the best of our knowledge, this is the longest study of endophthalmitis in Australia. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of all endophthalmitis cases to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, a state-wide tertiary referral centre for ocular conditions, thereby capturing nearly all state-wide endophthalmitis cases. All patients presenting with endophthalmitis were included. Demographic data, examination findings, microbiology

An outbreak of post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

OBJECTIVE: Infectious endophthalmitis is among the most serious complications of cataract surgery. Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are responsible for less than 30% of cases; however, their rapidity of infection and virulence often results in poor visual outcome despite prompt antibiotic treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate an outbreak of post-cataract surgery P. aeruginosa endophthalmitis in India. DESIGN: Hospital-based case series. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty patients with acute postoperative endophthalmitis who underwent cataract surgery at one of th

Multiple ciliary body cysts and secondary glaucoma in the Great Dane: a report of nine cases.

Between 1989 and 1995 nine Great Danes were presented to the small animal clinic of the University of Zurich Teaching Hospital with glaucoma and multiple cysts in the anterior and posterior chamber. In four of the nine dogs cysts were present in both eyes; however, bilateral glaucoma was seen in one case only. Mean intraocular pressure (IOP) at initial presentation was 42 mmHg measured by applanation tonometry. With the exception of one dog, all animals were treated medically for a minimum of 13 days. Two animals were subsequently lost to follow up. Two dogs underwent evisceration with implant

Late Cystoid Macular Edema Following Treated Bilateral Endogenous Endophthalmitis Due to Klebsiella pneumoniae: A Case Report.

Endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) is a rare but potentially devastating intraocular infection resulting from hematogenous seeding of an intraocular pathogen from a distant infectious focus. Klebsiella pneumoniae is an increasingly recognized causative agent, classically associated with hepatic abscesses, particularly in Asian populations, but with a growing incidence worldwide. Despite adequate treatment, late inflammatory complications may occur; cystoid macular edema (CME) as a delayed sequela of treated EE has been rarely described in the literature. We report a 64-year-old woman with no prio
