Interdisciplinary Management of a Class III Anterior Open Bite Malocclusion in a Patient With Cerebral Palsy.

Dentofacial disharmony in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) can lead to low self-esteem and functional limitations. However, medical and behavioral challenges in patients with developmental disorders often prevent dental practitioners from offering the necessary treatment. This report describes the clinical interdisciplinary management of a 20-year-old man with CP, including orthodontic, periodontal, and orthognathic surgery therapy. The patient presented with the chief complaint of having difficulty chewing, was wheelchair dependent, had poor orofacial muscle control, and exhibited a Class II

Periodontitis case definition affects the association with renal function in kidney transplant recipients.

AIM: The aim of this analysis was to investigate the association between periodontal status and renal allograft function in a cohort of renal transplant patients using different periodontitis case definitions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-eight kidney transplant patients were included. The subjects were classified into two groups, deterioration or stable/improvement of renal allograft function as expressed by the difference in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) between two time points at least 6 months apart. Chronic periodontitis was defined as: (1) two or more interproximal sites with clinical

Pathologic migration--spontaneous correction following periodontal therapy: a case report.

Periodontal disease is often associated with pathologic migration, which becomes an esthetic concern. A 17-year-old girl developed increasing gaps among her maxillary incisors. She had gingival enlargement in the palatal maxillary anterior region. The central incisors had pathologically migrated, resulting in a 2-mm diastema. Periodontal treatment was planned and completed. Following periodontal treatment, there was "spontaneous" repositioning of the central incisors. The 6-month follow-up revealed no change or deterioration of the periodontal condition. The patient was referred for orthodonti

Periodontal manifestations of systemic disease.

Periodontitis is a chronic bacterial infection of the supporting structures of the teeth. The host response to infection is an important factor in determining the extent and severity of periodontal disease. Systemic factors modify periodontitis principally through their effects on the normal immune and inflammatory mechanisms. Several conditions may give rise to an increased prevalence, incidence or severity of gingivitis and periodontitis. The effects of a significant number of systemic diseases upon periodontitis are unclear and often it is difficult to causally link such diseases to periodo

Electrospun Carbothane-Based Drug-Enriched Scaffolds for Cardiovascular Devices: Drug Release, Hemocompatibility, Endothelialization, and Immunological Characterization.

Polyurethane (PU) is widely used in medical products due to its biocompatibility and mechanical properties. Electrospinning (ES) was employed to produce PU-based scaffolds intended for cardiovascular devices (CVD) from blends of Carbothane (Carb) with human serum albumin (HSA), dimethylacetamide (DMA), and drugs. Sirolimus (SRL)-an immunosuppressive/anti-proliferative drug-and diclofenac (DF)-a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-were introduced into ES blends to produce drug-enriched scaffolds that prevent inflammation and cell overgrowth. The biocompatibility, stability, and mechanical prope

Development of Bone Exostosis Following the Use of a Free Gingival Graft: A 30-Year Case Report and Literature Review.

Bone exostosis is defined as a benign overgrowth of bone tissue of unclear origin. Rarely, bone exostosis might develop following soft tissue graft procedures like mucogingival surgical interventions (eg, FGG or subepithelial CTG). This aberration has been mainly associated with surgical trauma or fenestration of the periosteum but is still a matter of debate. The present paper (1) presents a clinical case with clinical, radiographic, and histologic findings at 30 years following application of an FGG to increase the gingival width and (2) provides a short literature review on this particular

Orofacial manifestations of hematological disorders: anemia and hemostatic disorders.

The aim of this paper is to review the literature and identify orofacial manifestations of hematological diseases, with particular reference to anemias and disorders of hemostasis. A computerized literature search using MEDLINE was conducted for published articles on orofacial manifestations of hematological diseases, with emphasis on anemia. Mesh phrases used in the search were: oral diseases AND anaemia; orofacial diseases AND anaemia; orofacial lesions AND anaemia; orofacial manifestations AND disorders of haemostasis. The Boolean operator "AND" was used to combine and narrow the searches.

The relationship between oral malodor and volatile sulfur compound-producing bacteria.

Halitosis can be a crippling social problem, and standard dental treatments and mouthwashes often provide only temporary relief. The mouth is home to hundreds of bacterial species that produce several fetid substances as a result of protein degradation. Volatile sulfur compound (VSC)-producing bacteria colonizing the lingual dorsum have recently been implicated in the generation of halitosis. Detection of VSCs, such as methylmercaptan and hydrogen sulfite, via organoleptic and objective methods, can aid in the identification of their source. Following comprehensive evaluation for possible caus

Mechanism of cyclosporin-induced inhibition of intracellular collagen degradation.

The immunosuppressant cyclosporin A (CsA) markedly inhibits collagen degradation by an intracellular phagocytic pathway in fibroblasts, an effect that can lead to massive gingival overgrowth. We used a collagen bead model of collagen phagocytosis to determine whether CsA inhibits internalization by blocking efflux of calcium from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondrial calcium stores. CsA caused dose-dependent inhibition of phagocytosis of collagen-coated (but not bovine serum albumin-coated) beads. Chelation of intracellular Ca(2+) with BAPTA/AM or inhibition of Ca(2+)-ATPase of ER store

Targets for steroid hormone mediated actions of periodontal pathogens, cytokines and therapeutic agents: some implications on tissue turnover in the periodontium.

This review attempts to encapsulate the relevance of steroid hormone action in the periodontal tissues, during inflammation, repair and in response to current treatment modalities. Periodontal pathogens metabolise steroid hormones which could contribute to their nutritional requirements and host evasion mechanisms, by forming capsular proteins; their culture supernatants stimulate the synthesis of physiologically active steroid hormones by fibroblasts, which aid inflammatory repair. The functions of glucocorticoids, androgens, oestrogen and progesterone on connective tissue and bone, are appli

Treatment modalities for drug-induced gingival enlargement.

This paper identifies 3 specific classifications of commonly prescribed medications that are known to cause gingival enlargement and describes surgical and non-surgical treatment therapies. Primary risks associated with drug-induced gingival enlargement, including increased dental decay and periodontal disease are also discussed. The precise bacterial etiology in gingival enlargement remains unclear, although sufficient evidence exists to support the role of good oral hygiene in decreasing the incidence and severity of gingival enlargement and improving overall gingival health. Etiology, treat

Mutations in KCNK4 that Affect Gating Cause a Recognizable Neurodevelopmental Syndrome.

Aberrant activation or inhibition of potassium (K+) currents across the plasma membrane of cells has been causally linked to altered neurotransmission, cardiac arrhythmias, endocrine dysfunction, and (more rarely) perturbed developmental processes. The K+ channel subfamily K member 4 (KCNK4), also known as TRAAK (TWIK-related arachidonic acid-stimulated K+ channel), belongs to the mechano-gated ion channels of the TRAAK/TREK subfamily of two-pore-domain (K2P) K+ channels. While K2P channels are well known to contribute to the resting membrane potential and cellular excitability, their involvem

Dental Implantology in Acromegaly: Pathophysiological Challenges, Biomaterial Interactions, and Future Directions-A Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Acromegaly is a chronic endocrine disorder caused by excessive secretion of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Acromegaly leads to a wide range of systemic alterations, including metabolic disturbances, abnormalities in bone microarchitecture, soft tissue overgrowth, and morphological changes in the maxilla and mandible. All these factors may significantly complicate the planning and success of implant therapy. STUDY AIM: This narrative review aimed to critically analyze the impact of acromegaly on bone healing and osseointegration, with particular emp
