PURPOSE: Since community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) was recognized, the molecular epidemiology of CA-MRSA in China has been diverse. It is unclear whether different sites of CA-MRSA infection differ in antimicrobial resistance and clinical characteristics. The purpose of this study was to identify the molecular types, virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance of CA-MRSA strains and to analyze the clinical characteristics of different sites of CA-MRSA infection.
METHODS: 26 CA-MRSA strains were screened from Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital from 2014 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has of late emerged as a cause of community-acquired infections among immunocompetent adults without risk factors. Skin and soft tissue infections represent the majority of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) clinical presentations, whilst invasive and life-threatening illness like necrotizing pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis, pyomyositis, osteomyelitis and sepsis syndrome are less common. Although more widely described in the pediatric age group, the occurrence of CA-MRSA osteomyelitis in adult

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) are increasingly identified as the cause of diarrhea and hemorrhagic colitis in countries with highly developed livestock. In 5-10% of patients, full-blown hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) occurs as a postinfectious life-threatening complication. Up to 1996, 5 out of 39 patients (12.8%) with EHEC O157 infections in Austria developed HUS. Acute complications of HUS such as brain edema may also lead to death; one fatal outcome has been observed so far in Austrian patients. Aside from the cytotoxic Shiga toxins, other different pathogenic factors are often

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) often colonizes the human skin, upper respiratory and genital tracts. In the female genital tract, it can be passed on to the newborn during vaginal delivery leading to either ordinary colonization, or neonatal infections notably umbilical stump sepsis, scalded skin syndrome, arthritis, or bacteraemia/sepsis. These infections are mediated by staphylococcal virulence factors such as (i) Staphylococcal Enterotoxins A, B, C, D, and E encoded by the sea, seb, sec, sed, see genes, (ii) Exfoliative Toxins A and B encoded by the eta and etb genes, (iii) T

BACKGROUND: Dairy products are regularly implicated as reservoirs for various bacterial contaminants capable of harboring antibiotic resistance and virulence genes. The spread of these genes is of major concern to public health in the presence of virulent and multidrug-resistant strains that persist in various processing locations.
AIM: This study aimed to identify antibiotic resistance and virulence genes in bacterial isolates obtained from cheese, yogurt, and cream and assess their molecular diversity using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR).
METHODS: Sam

Listeriosis is a serious infection linked to the consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Outbreaks and mortality rates associated with this infection make it a significant public health concern. As biocontrol agents, probiotics such as Lactobacillus plantarum had been of interest for the promotion of antilisterial activities. However, a recent bacteriocin from epidemic L. monocytogenes strains called listeriolysin S (LLS) has been identified with the ability to target the prokaryotic cells that may hinder the anti-listerial properties of L. plantarum. The present study wa

Vibrio parahaemolyticus, found frequently in oysters, is the most prevalent gastroenteritis-causing pathogen in Korea and in several other Asian countries. This study monitored changes in the environmental parameters and occurrence of V. parahaemolyticus in oyster aquaculture sites. Of the 44 presumed V. parahaemolyticus isolates obtained, when tested against 16 antibiotics, 90.9, 86.4, and 75.0% of the 44 isolates exhibited resistance to vancomycin, ampicillin, and streptomycin, respectively. PCR analysis for the presence of the toxR gene confirmed 31 of the 44 isolates as being positive V. p

The patterns of persistence and virulence factors expression in the representatives of human microbial biocenosis depends on a complex of the environmental conditions: influence of microbes-symbionts, biotope peculiarities, properties of microorganisms located within eukaryotes. Interactions of symbionts in pairs "indigen-indigen" isolated from mucous membrane of tonsils in healthy persons, did not lead to changes in expression of pathogenic properties. Interinfluence in pairs "pathogen-indigen" and "indigen-indigen", isolated from patients with chronic tonsilitis were accompanied by an increa

Non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) causes sporadic intestinal infections and systemic symptoms. Recently, global warming has led to an increase in NOVC infections; however, there have been no reports on the genomic analysis of clinical NOVC isolates in Japan, and the molecular understanding of NOVC remains inadequate. We identified three cases of NOVC infection in Nagoya, Japan, in 2020 and performed genomic analysis to reveal the molecular characteristics of these isolates and compared them with those of previously reported clinical cases. Phylogenetic analysis revealed high diversity. Th

Vibrio cholerae is a natural inhabitant of aquatic ecosystems globally. Strains of the serogroups O1 and O139 cause the epidemic diarrheal disease cholera. In Northern European waters, V. cholerae bacteria belonging to other serogroups (designated non-O1, non-O139) are present, of which some strains have been associated with gastrointestinal infections or extraintestinal infections, like wound infections or otitis. For this study, environmental strains from the German coastal waters of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea were selected (100 strains) and compared to clinical strains (10 isolates) t

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium responsible for localized infections of the oropharynx that can evolve into bacteremia and/or septic thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein or peritonsillar vein, called Lemierre's syndrome. To identify microbial genetic determinants associated with the severity of this life-threatening disease, 70 F. necrophorum strains were collected and grouped into two categories according to the clinical presentation: (i) localized infection, (ii) bacteremia with/without Lemierre's syndrome. Comparative genomic analyses revealed two clades wit

Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus are among the most prevalent nosocomial pathogens that are responsible for severe morbidity and mortality, even with appropriate treatment. Using a murine model of polymicrobial intra-abdominal infection (IAI), we have previously shown that coinfection with these pathogens results in synergistic lethality that is partially dependent on exacerbated prostaglandin signaling, while monomicrobial infection is nonlethal. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify staphylococcal virulence determinants that drive lethal synergism during polymicrob

Only Listeria monocytogenes that produce listeriolysin O (LLO) elicit protective immunity. Given the importance of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) in anti-Listeria immunity, we have investigated TNF-alpha production by macrophages after they ingested live LLO-producing compared to LLO-non-producing bacteria. We used two genetically engineered strains of Listeria that differed only in their ability (Ly+) or inability (Ly-) to produce LLO. Ly+ and Ly- caused the same kinetics of increased mRNA abundance for TNF-alpha during the first 90 min after phagocytosis. However, only Ly+ caused su

Within a period of 2 1/2 years, Bordetella bronchiseptica was isolated four times from a 79-year-old woman with bronchopneumonia. We have demonstrated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis that this infection was related to contact with infected rabbits. The initial human B. bronchiseptica isolate had a phenotype characteristic of usual B. bronchiseptica clinical isolates; it produced toxin and adhesins, such as adenylate cyclase-hemolysin, filamentous hemagglutinin, and pertactin, and was able to induce lethality in a murine respiratory model. By contrast, although the three successive human is

Staphylococcus aureus is a major opportunistic pathogen in humans; airborne exposure to this bacterium is associated with increased respiratory disease incidence. The airway epithelium, serving as the primary barrier against inhaled pathogens, is particularly vulnerable to bacterial invasion. However, the underlying mechanisms and relevant biomarkers for this exposure remain underexplored. In this study, we evaluated the toxic effect mechanisms and biomarkers of S. aureus aerosol exposure to human bronchial epithelial (16HBE) cells at the air-liquid interface using microRNA (miRNA) sequencing.

One of the most important livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) genetic lineages is the clonal complex (CC) 398, which can cause typical S. aureus-associated infections in people. In this work, whole-genome sequencing, RNA-sequencing, and gel-based comparative proteomics were applied to study the genetic characteristics of three MRSA CC398 isolates recovered from humans (strains C5621 and C9017), and from an animal (strain OR418). Of the three strains, C9017 presented the broadest resistance genotype, including resistance to fluroquinolone, clindamycin, tia

Porphyromonas gingivalis, the major etiologic agent of chronic periodontitis, produces a broad spectrum of virulence factors, including outer membrane vesicles, lipopolysaccharides, hemolysins and proteinases. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) including bacteriocins have been found to inhibit the growth of P. gingivalis; however, these peptides are relatively large molecules. Hence, it is difficult to synthesize them by a scale-up production. Therefore, this study aimed to synthesize a shorter AMP that was still active against P. gingivalis. A peptide that contained three cationic amino acids (Arg

In order to detect subclinical mastitis by means of California Mastitis Test and recounting of somatic cells, 163 cows from the dairies of San Luis city, Argentina, were examined. Seventy six individuals (46.6%) exhibited an inflammatory response ranging > or = 2+ grade and a cellular recounting value of > or = 5 x 10(5), data compatible with those of subclinical mastitis. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 39 (51.3%) cultures as estimated by the sum of the two last values listed in Table 1. Organisms were isolated by plating on brain heart infusion agar with 5% of sheep blood and on Bair
