Socioeconomic inequalities in the association between diet quality and incident cardiovascular diseases: A prospective study in the Netherlands.

AIMS: Lower socioeconomic position (SEP) groups have higher risks of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), with diet quality being a crucial risk factor. However, whether the association between diet quality and incident CVD differs across SEP (education and income) groups is unclear, which was examined in this study. METHODS: This study included participants aged 30-80 years, free of CVD at baseline, from the Dutch Lifelines cohort. The Lifelines Diet Score, a diet quality indicator based on Dutch dietary guidelines, was calculated with data assessed by a 110-item food frequency questionnaire. Cox

Behavioral excess and disruptive conduct: A historical and taxonomic approach to the origin of the 'impulse control disorders' diagnostic construct.

AIMS: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are iatrogenic and idiopathic conditions with psychosocial and economic consequences for the affected individuals and their families (e.g. bankruptcy and divorce). However, the definition of ICDs has changed over time, and ICDs are not consistently included within existing taxonomies. We discuss the origins of the ICD diagnostic construct and its unsolved tensions. METHODS: To contextualize the ICD diagnostic construct, we provided an overview of its origins in past centuries and followed its development across multiple editions of the Diagnostic and Sta

Application of routines that contribute to on-farm biosecurity as reported by Swedish livestock farmers.

On-farm biosecurity is important for preventing the spread of several contagious animal diseases. In this study, biosecurity routines among Swedish farmers with livestock (cattle, pigs, sheep or goats) were examined through questionnaires posted by mail. Moreover, the use of protective clothing among professionals visiting farms, such as animal transporters and veterinarians, were investigated through assessments made by the farmers. Questionnaires were completed, partly or fully, by 518 farmers (overall response rate 34%). Possible associations between biosecurity routines and livestock speci

Psychological heterogeneity and residential demands in early-stage aging: evidence from a human-environment systems framework.

BACKGROUND: Research on home-based eldercare has increasingly moved beyond physical safety and accessibility to consider psychological wellbeing and everyday activity. However, older adults are still often treated as a homogeneous group. Less is known about how different psychological profiles are associated with residential preferences, activity patterns, and perceived environmental support among early-stage aging adults. METHODS: This study focused on early-stage older adults and applied a human-environment systems framework to examine the relationships among psychological characteristics,

Association of Impulse Control Disorders with Cognitive Performance and Frontal Dysfunction in Patients with Parkinson's Disease.

Background: Frontal lobe circuit dysfunction, including the mesolimbic network, plays an important role in learning reward behaviors and is involved in the development of impulsive compulsive disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD). ICDs in PD are characterized by disinhibited, reward-driven behaviors performed with poor impulse control, often linked to dopaminergic treatment. The purpose of the present study was to assess the presence of these behaviors in relation to frontal dysfunction and overall cognitive status in a cohort of patients with sporadic PD. Methods: The study consisted o

Assessment of the Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Myopia from the City of Varna.

Background: The World Health Organization defines myopia as a global epidemic. Its growing prevalence and the increasingly early age onset all raise a major concern for public health due to the elevated risk of loss and deterioration of visual function as a result of myopia-related ocular pathological complications. However, it remains unclear whether the vision-related quality of life of patients with myopia is the same as in healthy individuals. The aim of the present study is to assess the quality of life in children and adolescents with myopia between the ages of 8 and 16 years, who underw
