Health consequences of cocaine use in France: data from the French Addictovigilance Network.

As the number and severity of complications related to cocaine use reported to the French Addictovigilance Network have increased, the French health authorities requested a national epidemiologic study of the data collected by this network from 2010 to 2016. For this purpose, the spontaneous reports (SRs) linked to cocaine notified by health professionals were analyzed as well as the data from the pharmacoepidemiological surveys OPPIDUM (observation of illegal drugs and misuse of psychotropic medications) and DRAMES (deaths related to the abuse of licit and illicit psychoactive substances). Clinical-radiological dissociation in a patient with nitrous oxide-induced subacute combined degeneration: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Several recent studies have reported subacute combined degeneration (SCD) induced by nitrous oxide (N2O) abuse. However, the association between the evolution of dynamic neuroimaging and clinical manifestations has not been reported in patients with N2O-induced SCD. CASE PRESENTATION: We described the case of a 24-year-old man who developed SCD with inverted V-sign hyperintensities over the posterior aspect of the spinal cord caused by frequent, excessive N2O inhalation. One month after treatment, his weakness and paresthesia resolved and serum vitamin B12 levels exceeded the norm

Pattern and risk of developing alcohol use disorders, illegal substance use and psychiatric disorders after early onset of alcohol use: Results of the Thai National Mental Health Survey 2013.

INTRODUCTION: Although underage drinking is a global concern, little is known about the relationship between age at first drink and development of various psychiatric comorbidities. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was done among 2928 lifetime drinkers from the Thai National Mental Health Survey 2013. Age at first drink, and onset of related psychiatric outcomes were inquired. Survival analysis using Cox regression was performed to estimate the risk over time for psychiatric problems across age ranges at first drink. RESULTS: Two-thirds of male and one-third of female drinkers were conside

Females uniquely vulnerable to alcohol-induced neurotoxicity show altered glucocorticoid signaling.

Women are more sensitive to the harmful effects of alcohol (EtOH) abuse than men, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Previous gene expression analysis of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) following a chronic intoxication paradigm using continuous 72 h vapor inhalation found that females, but not males, exhibit an inflammatory response at peak withdrawal that is associated with cell damage. Given that glucocorticoids can function as anti-inflammatories, are known to increase with EtOH exposure, and influence neurotoxicity, we hypothesized that males and females may exhibi

Single and Unhoused Population at Risk for Self-Inflicted Burn Injury: A Retrospective Analysis of an Urban American Burn Center's Experience.

Despite the growing recognition of self-harm as a pressing public health issue, demographic risk factors of self-inflicted burn (SIB) injuries in the United States have not been extensively described. In this retrospective study, we seek to identify demographic risk factors and patterns associated with SIB injuries at an urban burn center. Charts were reviewed of patients admitted to a single American Burn Association-verified burn unit between 2015 and 2023 with a history of SIB injury, identified with ICD10 code X76.XXXA. Descriptive statistics, Welch's t-test of unequal variances, and chi-s

Substance abuse in adolescents before admission to Peruvian juvenile detention centers: results from a national census in Peru, 2016.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of drug use before admission to juvenile detention centers (JDC) in Peru and determine individual, family and social influences on behavior. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed using data from the 2016 National Population Census in Juvenile Detention Centers (NPCJDC). A total of 1960 Peruvian adolescent offenders were included. Generalized linear models of the Poisson family with a log link function were used to determine if characteristics before admission to a JDC were associated with drug use. These characteristics included employment, d

Predictors of Pseudomonas and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in hospitalized patients with healthcare-associated pneumonia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients with healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP) are at high risk of infection with multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. Factors discriminating infection with MDR Gram-negative (MDR-GN) organism from infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are not well understood and patients are often treated for both organisms. This study was performed to determine risk factors predicting pneumonia due to Pseudomonas versus MRSA. METHODS: Veterans age ≥65 hospitalized with HCAP between 2002 and 2012 were identified from the Veterans Affairs administrat

Acamprosate and naltrexone treatment effects on ethanol and sucrose seeking and intake in ethanol-dependent and nondependent rats.

RATIONALE: Two pharmacotherapies are approved for treating alcohol craving (acamprosate and naltrexone), but both have shown mixed findings in animals and humans. OBJECTIVES: The present experiments utilized a "reinforcer blocking" approach (i.e., rats were able to consume ethanol during treatment) to better understand the efficacy of these treatments for ethanol seeking and drinking using ethanol-dependent and nondependent rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In "nondependent" experiments, drugs (acamprosate 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg; naltrexone 0.1, 0.3, and 1.0 mg/kg) were administered over 3-week p
