The impact of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a neurosurgical unit: a growing problem.

OBJECT: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is a growing problem worldwide. To investigate the severity of the problem, the authors surveyed the incidence of MRSA colonization and infection in the neurosurgical unit at their institution. METHODS: Patients colonized or infected with MRSA who had been treated in the neurosurgical unit between 1993 and 1999 were retrospectively identified from laboratory records. There were 203 patients with MRSA-positive cultures, and the incidence of infection increased between 1993 (16 cases; 1.9% of admissions) and 1999 (60 cases; 6.

Congenital hypertrophy of the lateral nail folds of the hallux: clinical features and follow-up of seven cases.

Congenital hypertrophy of the nail folds of the hallux describes an abnormality of the periungual soft tissues of the big toe characterized by hypertrophy of the nail fold which partially covers the nail plate and is frequently associated with inflammation and pain due to an ingrowing nail. We describe the clinical picture and follow-up of seven patients with this abnormality. In three patients the affected toe showed an asymptomatic, dome-shaped, hypertrophic lip that partially covered the nail plate. Four patients had acute inflammatory changes due to toenail ingrowth, with considerable swel

Interventions for the eradication of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in people with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis is an inherited recessive disorder of chloride transport that is characterised by recurrent and persistent pulmonary infections from resistant organisms that result in lung function deterioration and early mortality in sufferers.Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged as, not only an important infection in people who are hospitalised, but also as a potentially harmful pathogen in cystic fibrosis. Chronic pulmonary infection with MRSA is thought to confer people with cystic fibrosis with a worse clinical outcome and result in an increased rate o

Production of probiotic garden cress (Lepidium Sativum) using Bifidobacterium Bifidum and its evaluation of nutritional value, biocontrol and growth rate ability.

Probiotics are one of the most beneficial elements in human health. Several studies have confirmed the health benefits of probiotics. The consumption of fermented vegetables is widespread worldwide and represents an important component of the human diet for a growing global population. In recent years, consumers have become more aware of the relationship between food and health, which has led to an increase in interest in functional foods. The global market for probiotic foods is growing rapidly due to the increasing consumer awareness. Although leafy vegetables are well-endowed with bacteria,

Exploring alterations in the gut resistome in medically treated inflammatory bowel disease patients.

INTRODUCTION: The members of the human gut microbiota contain a large diversity of genes, including antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) known as the gut resistome. The resistome is susceptible to alterations when compositional changes occur in the fecal and gut microbiome. Medical treatment may affect members of the gut microbiota. This study hypothesizes that medication used by patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) leads to an increased prevalence and diversity of ARGs in the gut and a corresponding change in the taxonomic composition of the fecal microbiome. METHODS: Fecal samples

Erosive balanitis caused by Staphylococcus haemolyticus in a healthy, circumcised adult male.

INTRODUCTION: Balanitis is an inflammation of the glans penis. Balanoposthitis involves both the glans penis and prepuce and occurs only in uncircumcised males. Recurrent balanoposthitis represents a strong indication for circumcision. After Candida infections, aerobic bacteria are the second most common aetiological cause of acute infectious balanoposthitis, mainly streptococci groups B and D, and staphylococci, usually S. aureus . Their clinical manifestations are variable inflammatory changes, including diffuse erythema and oedema. Severe balanopreputial oedema with purulent exudate occurs

Bacterial Diversity and Antibiotic Susceptibility of Sparus aurata from Aquaculture.

In a world where the population continues to increase and the volume of fishing catches stagnates or even falls, the aquaculture sector has great growth potential. This study aimed to contribute to the depth of knowledge of the diversity of bacterial species found in Sparus aurata collected from a fish farm and to understand which profiles of diminished susceptibility to antibiotics would be found in these bacteria that might be disseminated in the environment. One hundred thirty-six bacterial strains were recovered from the S. aurata samples. These strains belonged to Bacillaceae, Bacillales

Impact of active screening for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and decolonization on MRSA infections, mortality and medical cost: a quasi-experimental study in surgical intensive care unit.

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading pathogen of healthcare-associated infections in intensive care units (ICUs). Prior studies have shown that decolonization of MRSA carriers is an effective method to reduce MRSA infections in ICU patients. However, there is currently a lack of data on its effect on mortality and medical cost. METHODS: Using a quasi-experimental, interrupted time-series design with re-introduction of intervention, we evaluated the impact of active screening and decolonization on MRSA infections, mortality and medical costs in the surg

Synergistic Combinations of FDA-Approved Drugs with Ceftobiprole against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

New strategies are urgently needed to address the public health threat of antimicrobial resistance. Synergistic agent combinations provide one possible pathway toward addressing this need and are also of fundamental mechanistic interest. Effective methods for comprehensively identifying synergistic agent combinations are required for such efforts. In this study, an FDA-approved drug library was screened against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (ATCC 43300) in the absence and presence of sub-MIC levels of ceftobiprole, a PBP2a-targeted anti-MRSA β-lactam. This screening identi

[Long-term results of an eradication regime against Staphylococcus aureus in patients treated with peritoneal dialysis].

Catheter exit site infection (ESI) remains a common complication in peritoneal dialysis patients. All the efforts for controlling ESI have been focused on the preventive eradication of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) colonization, because this microorganisms has been shown to be implicated in most of ESI. The main aims of the present study was to analyse the long-term results from an eradicative regimen of SA colonization, and to compare them with those obtained from a historical control group. From january 1993 to december 1999, 60 unselected patients on PD underwent an exhaustive protocol of SA e

Molluscum contagiosum of the eyelid: case report in a man receiving methotrexate and literature review of molluscum contagiosum in patients who are immunosuppressed secondary to methotrexate or HIV infection.

BACKGROUND: Molluscum contagiosum is a benign viral infection of the skin. Lesions typically present as dome-shaped, flesh-colored, umbilicated papules that range in size from 1 to 5 millimeters in diameter. They are usually asymptomatic, but can become tender or pruritic. Children and immunocompromised adults, including individuals being treated with immunosuppressive drugs, are most susceptible to infection. Single or multiple lesions most commonly appear on the extremities, face, genitals, and trunk. However, albeit rarely, molluscum contagiosum may also develop at other sites, including th

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection in a cardiac surgical unit.

BACKGROUND: Increased antibiotic resistance of common bacteria is attributed in part to the widespread use of various antibiotic agents. Prophylactic and therapeutic antibiotic treatments are routinely used in cardiac surgical units, and it is no surprise that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection is becoming a major cause of surgical infections in cardiac patients. METHODS: We reviewed our experience with patients who underwent cardiac surgery and experienced infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
