Pilot randomized controlled trial of Tuning Relationships with Music: Intervention for parents with a trauma history and their adolescent.

UNLABELLED: For parents who have experienced childhood interpersonal trauma, the challenges of parenting an adolescent may trigger memories of abuse, intensifying conflict, resulting in negative cycles of relating and poorer responsiveness to emotions when parenting. This study examined whether Tuning Relationships with Music, a dyadic therapy for parents and adolescents, increased responsive parent-adolescent interactions and parent emotion coaching whilst reducing conflict and adolescent mental health difficulties. Twenty-six parent-adolescent dyads were recruited if parents had a trauma his

China's language input system in the digital age affects children's reading development.

Written Chinese as a logographic system was developed over 3,000 y ago. Historically, Chinese children have learned to read by learning to associate the visuo-graphic properties of Chinese characters with lexical meaning, typically through handwriting. In recent years, however, many Chinese children have learned to use electronic communication devices based on the pinyin input method, which associates phonemes and English letters with characters. When children use pinyin to key in letters, their spelling no longer depends on reproducing the visuo-graphic properties of characters that are indis

Special report: controlling aggression in hospitals--what security officers must know to avoid physical attacks.

Threats to the safety of security officers by persons they encounter in confrontational or potentially confrontational situations are an ever-present danger. This potential for physical violence can take place in the lobby, cafeteria, halls, elevators, or the parking lot of any corporate entity, not just hospitals. In hospitals, however, this danger is compounded by psychiatric patients and other hospital patients under stress. Hospital security personnel are often called to defuse potentially violent patient situations. Further compounding this risk of violence are increases in cutbacks in ho

Social Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is typically well recognized by its characteristic motor symptoms (e.g., bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor). The cognitive symptoms of PD are increasingly being acknowledged by clinicians and researchers alike. However, PD also involves a host of emotional and communicative changes which can cause major disruptions to social functioning. These incude problems producing emotional facial expressions (i.e., facial masking) and emotional speech (i.e., dysarthria), as well as difficulties recognizing the verbal and nonverbal emotional cues of others. These social symptoms

Computer-mediated and face-to-face communication in metastatic cancer support groups.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the experiences of women with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) in computer-mediated and face-to-face support groups. METHOD: Interviews from 18 women with MBC, who were currently in computer-mediated support groups (CMSGs), were examined using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The CMSGs were in an asynchronous mailing list format; women communicated exclusively via email. All the women were also, or had previously been, in a face-to-face support group (FTFG). RESULTS: CMSGs had both advantages and drawbacks, relative to face-to-face groups (FTFGs), for this popula

Carotid artery atherosclerosis, MRI indices of brain ischemia, aging, and cognitive impairment: the Framingham study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Carotid atherosclerosis has been associated with increased risk of stroke and poorer cognitive performance in older adults. The relation of carotid atherosclerosis to cognitive impairment and MRI indices of ischemia and aging in midlife is less clear. METHODS: We studied 1975 Framingham Offspring Study participants free of stroke and dementia with available carotid ultrasound, brain MRI, and neuropsychological testing. We related common and internal carotid artery intima-media thickness and internal carotid stenosis to large white matter hyperintensity (>1 SD above age

Knowing Pain Without Certainty: Recognition When Self-Report is Unavailable.

Pain assessment often follows a hierarchy: self-report is treated as the gold standard, while behavioural and physiological evidence are used when the report is unavailable. This protects patients against professional disbelief but can make those unable to self-report appear unable to contribute to knowledge about their pain. I argue that verbal report and nonverbal expression belong to one interpretive practice while retaining different epistemic roles. Self-report carries presumptive first-person authority because it conveys experience, meaning, and preferences. Behavioural evidence is indir

Neurobehavioral Profiles and Clinical Consequences of MYT1L-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder: Insights from the Brain Gene Registry.

MYT1L-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (MYT1L-NDD) is a rare autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by intellectual disability, global developmental delay, autism, and obesity. Despite growing recognition, prospective and systematic clinical phenotyping remains limited. Here, we analyzed data from 20 individuals with MYT1L variants enrolled in the Brain Gene Registry (BGR), a national platform integrating genetic, neurobehavioral, and clinical data. Neurobehavioral assessments were conducted using the Rapid Neurobehavioral Assessment Protocol (RNAP), including virtual adaptations of the

A Cross-sectional Study on the Use of Face Masks: Psychosocial Image and Their Physiological Effects among Students of RAKMHSU.

INTRODUCTION: During the pandemic, masks were one of the main protective ways to prevent the spread of infection. Everyone was required to wear masks in academic institutions, however the types of masks used varied based on the setting. This has a lot of impact on learners during the pandemic, and this study aimed to find the problems faced by students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was a longitudinal observational study using a predesigned, prevalidated questionnaire. A total of 140 students responded to the questionnaire. RESULTS: The majority used disposable masks, followed by other ty

Sleep quality relates to language impairment in children with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify sleep quality profiles of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), to compare these profiles with those of typically developing (TD) children, and to verify whether there are differences between them in terms of language skills. METHODS: We evaluated the sleep quality and language skills of 47 children with ASD without intellectual disability (ID) and 32 children with TD. Using a hierarchical cluster analysis, we identified two sleep quality ASD profiles (poor and good). We then performed a series of MANCOVAs and ANOVAs to compare the sleep qualit

Multimodal immersion in English language learning in higher education: A systematic review.

The development of multimodality has led to increased research on its use to improve students' English language competency. However, no recent review has analyzed multimodality in English language learning in higher education. This systematic review examines 34 research articles published from 2013 to 2024. The primary focus of the study is to explore the application of multimodal pedagogies in higher education, the methods and materials used to assist learners in acquiring English language skills, the English language skills acquired through the usage of multimodality, and the main results of

Possible Gender Differences in Classical Music, Flamenco and Fado.

Music is an art form and cultural activity whose language, the sounds and silences, is organized in time with logic and sensitivity. Music as a whole is the result of an ancestral nonverbal and international mode of human expression and communication. The primitive and former mother-child bonding might be highly influenced and modulated by the music and singing with their babies. Musicality and music imply two different sides of the same coin, where the former is based on the human capacity to produce the latter. Some theories about evolution suggest music might have an adaptive advantage for

Expanding the phenotypic profile of boys with 47, XXY: the impact of familial learning disabilities.

The aim of the study was to examine the impact of familial learning disabilities (FLD) on the phenotypic profile of 47, XXY males and the possibility that 47, XXY males with more severe cognitive deficits may be partially a consequence of familial dyslexia/reading disorder. We wondered if FLD could pose an additional risk for complex neurodevelopmental differences in 47, XXY. The neurodevelopmental profile of males with 47, XXY has been characterized by developmental dyspraxia, language-based learning disorders, executive dysfunction, reading, and attentional deficits. Freiburg Questionnaire of linguistic pragmatics (FQLP): psychometric properties based on a psychiatric sample.

BACKGROUND: Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. Difficulties with respect to pragmatic speech, reading emotional and social cues, differentiating between fact and fiction, and taking into account the influence of context on a statement are commonly described features. However, hitherto established questionnaires did not focus on these symptoms. METHODS: In this study we present a short (11 questions) question

Socio-emotional processing and functioning of youth at high risk for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to investigate differences in socio-emotional processing and functioning in children and adolescents at high risk for bipolar disorder (BD) and healthy control participants. METHODS: Children and adolescents with a parent with bipolar disorder, who had mood dysregulation but not fully syndromal BD (high risk, HR, n=24), were compared to participants with no personal or family history of psychopathology (healthy control, HC, n=27) across several neuropsychological domains. Social reciprocity was measured by the Social Responsiveness Scale, theory of mind

Hemispheric contributions to pragmatics.

Twenty-seven patients with right-hemisphere damage (RBD) and thirty-one patients with left-hemisphere damage (LBD) received a new pragmatics battery in Hebrew consisting of two parts: (1) comprehension and production of basic speech acts (BSAs), including tests of assertions, questions, requests, and commands, and (2) comprehension of implicatures, including implicatures of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. Each test had a verbal and a nonverbal version. Patients also received Hebrew versions of the Western Aphasia Battery and of the Right Hemisphere Communication Battery. Both LBD and

Frequency and pattern of documented diagnostic features and the age of autism identification.

OBJECTIVE: The DSM-IV-TR specifies 12 behavioral features that can occur in hundreds of possible combinations to meet diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This paper describes the frequency and variability with which the 12 behavioral features are documented in a population-based cohort of 8-year-old children under surveillance for ASD, and examines whether documentation of certain features, alone or in combination with other features, is associated with earlier age of community identification of ASD. METHOD: Statistical analysis of behavioral features documented for a popu

Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of a Caregiver-Assisted Group-Based Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention Program for Autistic Preschoolers: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) effectively improve developmental, social, and adaptive outcomes in autistic children, with caregiver involvement further enhancing treatment effects. Although one-on-one NDBI programs are strongly supported by evidence, their reliance on high staff-to-child ratios and certified therapists limits scalability. Group-based NDBI models may represent a more feasible and cost-effective alternative, particularly when implemented with open-access fidelity frameworks and active caregiver participation. This pilot randomized controlled trial c

An Economic Evaluation of Australia's Newborn Hearing Screening Program: A Within-Study Cost-Effectiveness Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent congenital disorders among children. Many countries have implemented universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) for the early diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss. Despite widespread implementation, the value for money of UNHS is unclear due to lack of cost and outcomes data from rigorous study designs. The objective of this research is to conduct a within-study cost-effectiveness analysis of UNHS compared with targeted screening (targeting children with risk factors of hearing loss) from the Australian healthcare system perspective. Communication interventions for autism spectrum disorder in minimally verbal children.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has an estimated prevalence of around 1.7% of the population. People with ASD often also have language difficulties, and about 25% to 30% of children with ASD either fail to develop functional language or are minimally verbal. The ability to communicate effectively is an essential life skill, and difficulties with communication can have a range of adverse outcomes, including poorer academic achievement, behavioural difficulties and reduced quality of life. Historically, most studies have investigated communication interventions for ASD in verbal child
