From policy to practice: feasibility and acceptability of training ASHAs to deliver birth preparedness and complication readiness in North Karnataka, India: a pre-post study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality remains a major public health concern in low-resource settings. Birth preparedness and complication readiness (BPCR) is an established strategy to improve timely care-seeking and reduce preventable maternal and neonatal complications. Utilizing Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) to deliver BPCR interventions may strengthen community-level implementation; however, evidence on feasibility and acceptability is limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility and acceptability of an ASHA training strategy for community-level delivery of BPCR interventions in No

Design of a randomized clinical trial of a colorectal cancer screening decision aid to promote appropriate screening in community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate colorectal cancer screening in older adults should be aligned with the likelihood of net benefit. In general, patient decision aids improve knowledge and values clarity, but in older adults, they may also help patients identify their individual likelihood of benefit and foster individualized decision-making. We report on the design of a randomized clinical trial to understand the effects of a patient decision aid on appropriate colorectal cancer screening. This report includes a description of the baseline characteristics of participants. METHODS: English-speaking prim

Assessment of Self-Administration of Romiplostim in Patients with Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura after Receipt of Home Administration Training Materials: a Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Romiplostim is a subcutaneously administered thrombopoietin-receptor agonist approved in the European Union for self-administration (or administration by a caregiver) in selected adult patients with chronic primary immune thrombocytopenia refractory to other treatments. To mitigate the risk of medication errors due to self-administration, the manufacturer has implemented additional risk minimisation measures (RMM) in the form of a Home Administration Training (HAT) pack to support the training of both healthcare professionals (HCPs) (guide and checklist for patient selection and

Transcultural adaption and preliminary evaluation of "understanding low back pain" patient education booklet.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the number one cause of disability globally. LBP is a symptom associated with biological, psychological and social factors, and serious causes for pain are very rare. Unhelpful beliefs about LBP and inappropriate imaging are common. Practitioners report pressure from patients to provide inappropriate imaging. A recently developed patient education and management booklet, 'Understanding low back pain', was designed to target previously identified barriers for reducing inappropriate imaging. The booklet includes evidence-based information on LBP and supports co

A randomized controlled trial of smoking cessation for pregnant women to test the effect of a transtheoretical model-based intervention on movement in stage and interaction with baseline stage.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether, as predicted by the transtheoretical model (TTM), stage-matched interventions will be more effective than stage-mismatched interventions. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial of smoking cessation advice to pregnant smokers. METHODS: Pregnant women currently smoking at 12 weeks gestation were enrolled in a pragmatic three-arm trial of TTM-based interventions to help them stop smoking. One arm constituted standard midwifery advice and a self-help leaflet on stopping smoking, which is generally appropriate for women in preparation. Two arms were TTM-based. Differe

EMPOWHPVR: exploring the factors that impact HPV self-sampling uptake amongst Black women and people with a cervix in Peel region, Ontario - a qualitative study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Every 2 minutes, a woman dies from cervical cancer, resulting in over 300 000 preventable deaths globally. Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and are preventable with HPV vaccination and screening through Papanicolaou (Pap) and HPV tests. In Canada, cervical cancer mortality rates have declined in recent decades with more accessible cervical cancer screening programmes. However, screening rates remain low, particularly among Black women and people with a cervix (WPC).Cervical cancer screening studies of Black WPC in Ontario-Canada's most populous

Zika virus public health crisis and the perpetuation of gender inequality in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: In 2015-2017, the Americas experienced a highly consequential epidemics for pregnancy and childbearing. Mainly transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, but also through sexual intercourse, the Zika virus poses the risk of congenital Zika syndrome to fetus, which includes microcephaly and other child development complications. When a public health crisis taps directly into reproductive health, typically a feminine realm, responses to the emergency may exacerbate deeply-rooted gender norms. This paper investigates the role of gender in two relational contexts: (a) the government-le

Trial participants' self-reported understanding of randomisation phrases in participation information leaflets can be high, but acceptability of some descriptions is low, especially those linked to gambling and luck.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates that trial participants often struggle to understand participant information leaflets (PILs) for clinical trials, including the concept of randomisation. We analysed the language used to describe randomisation in PILs and determine the most understandable and acceptable description through public and participant feedback. METHODS: We collected 280 PILs/informed consent forms and one video animation from clinical research facilities/clinical trial units in Ireland and the UK. We extracted text on how randomisation was described, plus trial characteristics. We con

Longitudinal evaluation of an educational intervention for preventing tick bites in an area with endemic lyme disease in Baltimore County, Maryland.

The authors attempted to determine whether a targeted educational intervention in an area with endemic Lyme disease could increase knowledge, positive attitudes, and reported behaviors related to tick bite prevention and consequently decrease tick bites, as measured by a biomarker of tick bites. Between April and September of 1999, 317 subjects in Baltimore County, Maryland, were randomized to receive either tick-related or general health-related educational materials bimonthly through the mail. At each of three clinic visits, participants completed a self-administered questionnaire and provid

Early detection of melanoma: an educational campaign in Padova, Italy.

To evaluate a public campaign for the early referral and treatment of cutaneous melanoma, an educational programme based on self-selection by subjects was organized in Padova, Italy in 1991. In the period from 1991 to 1996, 90,000 leaflets containing information on naevi, melanoma and skin self-examination were mailed to each household, reaching a population of 243,000 subjects. A total of 2050 individuals requested a skin check as a result of the leaflet. Most were at low risk, the majority being female (68%) and aged under 40 years (51.6%), with no risk factors (58.3%). A comparison of physical therapy, chiropractic manipulation, and provision of an educational booklet for the treatment of patients with low back pain.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: There are few data on the relative effectiveness and costs of treatments for low back pain. We randomly assigned 321 adults with low back pain that persisted for seven days after a primary care visit to the McKenzie method of physical therapy, chiropractic manipulation, or a minimal intervention (provision of an educational booklet). Patients with sciatica were excluded. Physical therapy or chiropractic manipulation was provided for one month (the number of visits was determined by the practitioner but was limited to a maximum of nine); patients were followed for a tota

Evaluation of mouth self-examination in the control of oral cancer.

This study was planned to evaluate the feasibility of mouth self-examination (MSE). Some 450 college students distributed to 9000 households a brochure describing the risk factors of oral cancer, the appearance of premalignant and malignant lesions of the oral cavity and the methods of MSE with pictures. All subjects with tobacco habits and/or aged 30 years or over were asked to read the brochure carefully and to report to the clinic conducted in their locality on fixed days, if they suspected an abnormality while practising MSE. Out of the approximately 22,000 eligible subjects, 8028 (36%) pr

Increasing Vaginal Chlamydia Trachomatis Testing in Adolescent and Young Adults.

OBJECTIVE: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend testing for Chlamydia trachomatis in sexually active female patients <25 years old using nucleic-acid amplification tests (NAAT) from a vaginal swab. Our providers were typically testing using the less sensitive urine NAATs. We aimed to increase the percentage of urogenital C trachomatis NAATs performed by using vaginal swabs in adolescent female patients ages 10 through 20 years from 1.4% to 25%. METHODS: We implemented 3 interventions at 3 pediatric practices over 12 months including education, process standardization, and
