Here, we present a case of disseminated nocardiosis, involving pneumonia, percutaneous abscess, and bacteremia, in a 67-year-old Japanese woman. She had also been treated for rheumatoid arthritis with prednisolone, methotrexate, and tocilizumab (interleukin-6 receptor inhibitor). Based on the 16S rRNA sequence analysis and a blast search, we identified the isolate as Nocardia brasiliensis. We discontinued methotrexate and tocilizumab on admission, and administered intravenous antimicrobial combination therapy for 6 weeks, followed by oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for 12 months, in total.

The aim of the study was to establish the importance of KOH mount in rapid diagnosis of fungal corneal ulcers. Corneal scrapings were collected from 50 patients with corneal ulcers where clinical features suggested fungal aetiology and ulcers showed no signs of healing on initial treatment. Corneal scrapings were subjected to wet mount with 10% KOH, Gram's stain, and culture on SDA media. Wet mount showed fungal elements in 34 cases (68%) and were classified according to morphology. Gram's stain of corneal scrapings did not provide much help. Fungal culture was positive in 9 (26.4%) out of 34

We experienced a breakthrough fungal infection caused by Geotrichum capitatum during empirical therapy with caspofungin. A 68-year-old male patient with refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia had received umbilical cord blood transplantation after two courses of induction therapy. A simple, reliable, highly sensitive and selective spectrofluorimetric method has been developed for determination of certain aminoglycosides namely amikacin sulfate, tobramycin, neomycin sulfate, gentamicin sulfate, kanamycin sulfate and streptomycin sulfate. AIMS: To evaluate the Gram stain with carbol-fuchsin counterstain for the rapid detection of Campylobacter species in faecal samples.
METHODS: In total, 842 consecutive diarrhoeic faecal samples were prospectively examined for Campylobacter species by Gram stain and culture.
RESULTS: Campylobacter species were isolated from 84 faecal samples (all Campylobacter jejuni). Compared with culture, Gram stain microscopy had a sensitivity of 89%, specificity of 99.7%, positive predictive value of 97%, and negative predictive value of 99% for detecting Campylobacter species.

The membrane permeability transition (MPT) induced by Ca2+ and Pi or Asi was studied in rat kidney mitochondria. Membrane potential, Ca2+ transport and swelling were used to monitor the MPT. George Luedemann is known throughout the antimicrobial community as one of the discoverers of the natural product antibiotic gentamicin. He subsequently hypothesized that slow-growing organisms inhabiting inhospitable, nutrient-limited environments may represent an enriched source of previously undescribed microbes that produce novel antimicrobials to create a competitive advantage over faster-growing rival organisms.
