Bee species-specific nesting material attracts a generalist parasitoid: implications for co-occurring bees in nest box enhancements.

Artificial nests (e.g., nest boxes) for bees are increasingly being used to contribute to nesting habitat enhancement for bees that use preexisting cavities to provision brood. They usually incorporate additional nesting materials that vary by species. Cavity-nesting bees are susceptible to brood parasitoids that recognize their host(s) using visual and chemical cues. Understanding the range of cues that attract parasitoids to bee nests, including human-made analogues, is important if we wish to control parasitism and increase the potential value of artificial nests as habitat-enhancement stra

Protection of MPTP-induced neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration by Pycnogenol.

Oxidative stress and inflammation play a crucial role in Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis and may represent a target for treatment. Current PD drugs provide only symptomatic relief and have limitations in terms of adverse effects and inability to prevent neurodegeneration. Flavonoids have been suggested to exert human health benefits by its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, in the present study, using 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydro pyridine (MPTP)-induced mouse model of Parkinsonism, we investigated the neuroprotective potential of bioflavonoid compound Pycno

Impact of emission from oil shale fueled power plants on the growth and foliar elemental concentrations of Scots pine in Estonia.

To study the impact of air pollution on the growth and elemental composition of conifers, 5 sample plots were established at different distances and directions from the Estonian Power Plant (Northeast Estonia) in 1999-2000. The selected stands were 75-80(85)-yr-old parts (0.05 ha) of (Oxalis)-Myrtillus site type forest of 0.7-0.8 density. The soils of all sample plots were Gleyic Podzols (Lkg) on sands. The several times higher Ca concentration in the humus horizon of the sample plot NE from the Estonian PP is caused by the prevailing westerly and southerly winds which carry more pollutants NE

[Biological effect of wood dust].

The biological effect of exposure to wood dust depends on its composition and the content of microorganisms which are an inherent element of the dust. The irritant and allergic effects of wood dust have been recognised for a long time. The allergic effect is caused by the wood dust of subtropical trees, e.g. western red cedar (Thuja plicata), redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), obeche (Triplochiton scleroxylon), cocabolla (Dalbergia retusa) and others. Trees growing in the European climate such as: larch (Larix), walnut (Juglans regia), oak (Quercus), beech (Fagus), pine (Pinus) cause a little les

[Allergic contact dermatitis caused by plants].

The proliferation of house and garden plants, some of them highly sensitizing, produced by the general improvement of the standard of living, is causing an increase in the number of cases of contact dermatitis from plants with both irritative and allergic mechanisms. During the past 12 years, we have studied 43 cases of allergic eczema caused by plant contact as primary sensitization which supposes 2.4% of the patients with allergic contact dermatitis attended in our Services. The majority of patients were women (65%) as opposed to 35% men while the ages varied from 12 to 70 years with an aver

Controlling the invasive diatom Didymosphenia geminata: an ecotoxicity assessment of four potential biocides.

In 2004, an invasive mat-forming freshwater diatom, Didymosphenia geminata (didymo), was found in New Zealand causing concern with regard to potential consequences for local freshwater ecosystems. A four-stage research program was initiated to identify methods to control D. geminata. This article reports the results of Stage 2, in which four potential control compounds [Gemex™ (a chelated copper formulation), EDTA, Hydrothol®191, and Organic Interceptor™ (a pine oil formulation)] selected in Stage 1 were evaluated for their biocidal efficacy on D. geminata and effects on non-target organisms u

Evaluating threats to an endangered species by proxy: air pollution as threat to the blue swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) in South Africa.

BACKGROUND, AIM, AND SCOPE: The blue swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) is one of the most threatened bird species in southern Africa. Among terrestrial birds, its plumage is known to be the most water repellent, an adaptation to foraging on the wing in dense fog. Despite this unique adaptation, the nesting success of the blue swallow at the Blue Swallow Natural Heritage Site (BSNHS) is lower during years with high incidence of fog. As the phenomenon is not observed at other nesting sites, we hypothesized that this is due to changes in the air chemistry at the BSNHS. In the immediate proximity of

Pine-Extracted Phytosterol β-Sitosterol (APOPROSTAT® Forte) Inhibits Both Human Prostate Smooth Muscle Contraction and Prostate Stromal Cell Growth, Without Cytotoxic Effects: A Mechanistic Link to Clinical Efficacy in LUTS/BPH.

Introduction: Medical treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) targets prostate smooth muscle tone for rapid relieve of symptoms and prostate size to prevent disease progression. Recently, EAU guidelines introduced phytomedicines for treatment of LUTS/BPH. Phytosterols may reduce the risk of prostate diseases and seem to be the smallest common denominator between different phytotherapeutic preparations. Thus, we investigated the effects of the highly concentrated phytosterol β-sitosterol on human prostate smooth muscle contraction and ce

Weathering of pyrogenic organic matter induces fungal oxidative enzyme response in single culture inoculation experiments.

The addition of pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM), the aromatic carbon-rich product of the incomplete combustion of plant biomass or fossil fuels, to soil can influence the rate of microbial metabolism of native soil carbon. The interaction of soil heterotrophs with PyOM may be governed by the surficial chemical and physical properties of PyOM that evolve with environmental exposure. We present results of a 36-day laboratory incubation investigating the interaction of a common white-rot fungus, Trametes versicolor, with three forms of 13C-enriched (2.08 atom% 13C) PyOM derived from Pinus pondero

AIRTREE v2.0: predicting ecosystem services provided by Italian urban parks under climate change scenarios.

In an era of climate change and increasing air pollution, accurately quantifying forest ecosystem services-particularly in urban and peri-urban contexts-is essential. Species selection for these areas requires identifying trees that are both climate-resilient and effective at carbon sequestration and pollutant removal. We present an upgraded version of the AIRTREE v1.0 multi-layer canopy model to assess ecosystem services provided by urban parks placed in 43 Italian sites established under a national reforestation program. Simulations were performed under two climate scenarios (Representative

Ameliorative effects of pine bark extract on spermatotoxicity by α-chlorohydrin in rats.

We investigated the protective effects of pine bark extract (Pycnogenol®, PYC, Horphag Research Ltd., Route de Belis, France) against α-chlorohydrin (ACH)-induced spermatotoxicity in rats. Rats were orally administered ACH (30 mg/kg/day) with or without PYC (20 mg/kg/day) for 7 days. Administration of ACH significantly decreased sperm motility. α-Chlorohydrin also caused histopathological alterations and apoptotic changes in caput epididymides. An increased malondialdehyde concentration and decreased glutathione content, as well as catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were also found

Reactive oxygen species induce apoptosis in bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells by inhibiting the antiglycation glyoxalase I defence: involvement of superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide and NF-κB.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are implicated in the regulation of apoptosis through a number of distinct mechanisms depending on cell type and stimulation conditions. Glyoxalase I (GI) metabolizes methylglyoxal (MG) and MG-derived advanced glycation end products (AGEs) known to cause apoptosis. This study examined the possible role of GI among the mechanisms of ROS-driven apoptosis in human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells exposed to wood dust and signaling pathways by which these reactive species regulate GI expression. Our results showed that wood dust generated distinct ROS (superoxide an

Differential aboveground-belowground adaptive strategies to alleviate N addition-induced P deficiency in two alpine coniferous forests.

Increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has resulted in phosphorus (P) limitation in multiple terrestrial ecosystems, yet how plants coordinate aboveground and belowground strategies to adapt to such P deficiency remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a field N fertilization experiment in two alpine coniferous plantations (Picea asperata Mast. and Pinus armandii Franch.) with different soil N availability on the eastern Tibetan Plateau of China, to examine N addition effects on plant nutrient limiting status and plant adaptive strategies corresponding to aboveground P conservation

The effect of aluminum smelter emissions on nutritional status of coniferous trees (Irkutsk Region, Russia).

Element contents in assimilation organs of trees are an essential component of a comprehensive forest condition diagnosis. They allow conclusions about the current nutritional status of trees and estimate the main risks for a sustainable forest ecosystem management in the future. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of highly aggressive fluorine-containing emissions from a large aluminum smelter on the nutritional status of coniferous trees Larix sibirica and Pinus sylvestris. Studies carried out in the background areas showed that the both species have the main part of the ele
