Predominance of IncL/M and IncF plasmid types among CTX-M-ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in Bulgarian hospitals.

Our objective was to investigate the plasmid replicon-types involved in spread of ESBLs among Bulgarian Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. Sixty-three isolates, with transferable beta-lactam resistance determinants, collected between 2007 and 2009 in six medical institutions, were analysed with respect to their antimicrobial susceptibility, ESBL-, RAPD-, and plasmid replicon-type. Phylogenetic typing and screening for the O25b-ST131 lineage were carried out for E. coli. The predominant ESBLs were CTX-M-15 (81%) among E. coli and CTX-M-3 (58%) among K. pneumoniae. Other sporadically fo

Trypanosoma cruzi strains isolated from human, vector, and animal reservoir in the same endemic region in Mexico and typed as T. cruzi I, discrete typing unit 1 exhibit considerable biological diversity.

In this study, three strains of Trypanosoma cruzi were isolated at the same time and in the same endemic region in Mexico from a human patient with chronic chagasic cardiomyopathy (RyC-H); vector (Triatoma barberi) (RyC-V); and rodent reservoir (Peromyscus peromyscus) (RyC-R). The three strains were characterized by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis, random amplified polymorphic DNA, and by pathological profiles in experimental animals (biodemes). Based on the analysis of genetic markers the three parasite strains were typed as belonging to T. cruzi I major group, discrete typing unit 1. The p

A unique strain of Leptospira isolated from a patient with pulmonary haemorrhages in the Andaman Islands: a proposal of serovar portblairi of serogroup Sehgali.

Leptospirosis is endemic in the Andaman Islands, often occurring as outbreaks during the post-monsoon period. Pulmonary involvement is common and associated with high morbidity and mortality. During the investigation of an outbreak in North Andaman in 1996 an isolate was recovered from the blood of a patient with fever, headache, body aches and haemoptysis with respiratory distress as presenting symptoms. The isolate was characterized using the cross-agglutination absorption test (CAAT) and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). The isolate showed typical morphology and characteristic motility of the g

Molecular relationships and antimicrobial susceptibilities of viridans group streptococci isolated from blood of neutropenic cancer patients.

From January 1995 to May 1998, 57 episodes of bacteremia due to viridans group streptococci were identified in 50 febrile neutropenic patients with hematologic malignancies. Four patients experienced two separate episodes of streptococcal bacteremia, and one patient had four separate episodes of streptococcal bacteremia. Strains were identified to species level as Streptococcus mitis (n = 37), Streptococcus oralis (n = 19), and Streptococcus salivarius (n = 1). Epidemiologic relatedness of these strains was studied by using PCR-based fingerprinting with M13 and ERIC-2 primers and pulsed-field

Characterization of cathepsin B gene from orange-spotted grouper, Epinephelus coioides involved in SGIV infection.

The lysosomal cysteine protease cathepsin B of papain family is a key regulator and signaling molecule that involves in various biological processes, such as the regulation of apoptosis and activation of virus. In the present study, cathepsin B gene (Ec-CB) was cloned and characterized from orange-spotted grouper, Epinephelus coioides. The full-length Ec-CB cDNA was composed of 1918 bp and encoded a polypeptide of 330 amino acids with higher identities to cathepsin B of teleosts and mammalians. Ec-CB possessed typical cathepsin B structural features including an N-terminal signal peptide, the

Genetic typing of human and food isolates of Listeria monocytogenes from episodes of listeriosis.

Ten clinical and food Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated during the epidemiological investigations of episodes of listeriosis (one outbreak and two sporadic cases) that occurred in northern Italy during 1993-1995 have been examined by DNA macrorestriction pattern analysis obtained by PFGE and RAPD typing, in order to confirm the food vehicle of infections. The same DNA profiles within the isolates from the three episodes were obtained by both techniques. The Apal and Smal PFGE profiles and RAPD patterns with primer OPM-01 confirmed the close relationship between strains from two distinct

Clonal dissemination of drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in Thailand: insights from nationwide molecular typing.

INTRODUCTION: Drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii poses a global health crisis, especially in Asia. It has a propensity to become clonally endemic in healthcare settings. However, its clonal distribution in a broad geographic area is unclear. METHODOLOGY: The clonality of A. baumannii was characterized nationwide by collecting 572 drug-resistant A. baumannii from 18 hospitals across Thailand regions between 2017-2018 and genotyping them by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in association with carbapenemase genes data. RESULTS: The results depicted 12

Biofilm and planktonic lifestyles differently support the resistance of the desert cyanobacterium Chroococcidiopsis under space and Martian simulations.

When Chroococcidiopsis sp. strain CCMEE 057 from the Sinai Desert and strain CCMEE 029 from the Negev Desert were exposed to space and Martian simulations in the dried status as biofilms or multilayered planktonic samples, the biofilms exhibited an enhanced rate of survival. Compared to strain CCMEE 029, biofilms of strain CCME 057 better tolerated UV polychromatic radiation (5 × 10(5) kJ/m(2) attenuated with a 0.1% neutral density filter) combined with space vacuum or Martian atmosphere of 780 Pa. CCMEE 029, on the other hand, failed to survive UV polychromatic doses higher than 1.5 × 10(3) k

[Molecular epidemiology of a streptococcus pyogenes related nosocomial outbreak in a burn unit].

BACKGROUND: Group A Streptococcal (GAS) infections have increased in frequency and severity worldwide. During April 1996, a nosocomial outbreak associated to GAS infections affected seven patients admitted to a pediatric burn unit. The causative organism was likely disseminated from the source patient to another child in the emergency room before he was transferred to the burn unit. Patients developed burn infections or invasive disease. One of them died due to a toxic shock syndrome and 3 other lost their skin grafts. An outbreak of trichinellosis in farmed wild boar in Finland.

Nine farmed wild boar out of 25 slaughtered from a single farm were condemned at meat inspection because of trichinellosis. With RAPD-PCR, Trichinella spiralis was identified in all positive wild boar. Out of the available serum samples (n=7), all wild boar which had failed the meat inspection showed seroconversion in ELISA and Western blotting, as did one additional animal which had passed the inspection. The animals became infected during an invasion of rats from an improperly closed dump near the farm. Unfortunately, by the time trichinellosis was discovered in the wild boar, the invasion h

Emetic toxin formation of Bacillus cereus is restricted to a single evolutionary lineage of closely related strains.

An in-depth polyphasic approach was applied to study the population structure of the human pathogen Bacillus cereus. To assess the intraspecific biodiversity of this species, which is the causative agent of gastrointestinal diseases, a total of 90 isolates from diverse geographical origin were studied by genetic [M13-PCR, random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD), multilocus sequence typing (MLST)] and phenetic [Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR), protein profiling, biochemical assays] methods. The strain set included clinical strains, isolates from food remnants connected to outbreaks, as

Comparative analysis of Borrelia isolates from southeastern USA based on randomly amplified polymorphic DNA fingerprint and 16S ribosomal gene sequence analyses.

Fifty-three southern USA Borrelia isolates were characterized using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA fingerprinting analysis (RAPD). Twenty-nine types were recognized among 37 B. andersonii strains, seven types among eight B. bissettii strains, and seven types among seven B. burgdorferi sensu stricto strains. Strain TXW-1 formed a separate RAPD type. Nearly complete sequences of the rrs genes from 17 representative southern Borrelia were determined. The similarity values were found to be 96-100% within the B. burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) complex, 94-99% among the relapsing fever borreliae,
