Antimicrobial resistance and population structure of Staphylococcus aureus recovered from pigs farms.

Staphylococcus aureus is a burden in human and veterinary medicine. During the last decade, an increasing number of studies reported the presence of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus (LA-MRSA) clonal complex (CC) 398 in pigs. During 2013, a survey was performed in pig farms (n=328) randomly selected over Belgium, to monitor the current epidemiological situation of LA-MRSA among asymptomatic pigs and compare with former data to determine possible evolutions. Per farm, nose swabs were taken from 20 animals and pooled. MRSA was detected in 215 farms. Most isolates belonged to C

Genome-wide characteristics, antibiotic resistance, and pathogenicity analysis of Streptococcus parasuis strains isolated from diseased pigs.

Streptococcus parasuis is currently not only an underestimated zoonotic pathogen but also a bacterial source of infection in food animals, posing a potential threat to global public health. Despite increased reports in recent years, systematic studies in Northwest China remain scarce. However, the lack of complete genomic sequence information has limited in-depth bioinformatics analysis of multidrug-resistant S. parasuis isolated from pigs. This study reports the whole-genome sequencing results of S. parasuis strain A1 isolated from pigs. The A1 genome consists of a single circular chromosome

Enrichment of high-risk antibiotic resistance genes on microplastics in freshwater environments: A meta-analysis.

Microplastics (MPs) and their associated biofilms, collectively known as the plastisphere, are emerging as environmental vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, whether MPs preferentially retain health-relevant resistance genes remains unclear. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing ARG profiles on MPs and in surrounding freshwater environments. The meta-analysis revealed significant ARG enrichment in MP biofilms compared to water. Subgroup analyses further revealed that MPs enriched several mobile and enzyme-mediated resistance categories, includi

The oral microbiota is a reservoir for antimicrobial resistance: resistome and phenotypic resistance characteristics of oral biofilm in health, caries, and periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an ever-growing threat to modern medicine and, according to the latest reports, it causes nearly twice as many deaths globally as AIDS or malaria. Elucidating reservoirs and dissemination routes of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) are essential in fighting AMR. Human commensals represent an important reservoir, which is underexplored for the oral microbiota. Here, we set out to investigate the resistome and phenotypic resistance of oral biofilm microbiota from 179 orally healthy (H), caries active (C), and periodontally diseased (P) individual

Prevalence of the Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Coagulase-Positive-and Negative-Staphylococcus in Chicken Meat Retailed to Consumers.

The use of antibiotics in farm management (growing crops and raising animals) has become a major area of concern. Its implications is the consequent emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and accordingly their access into the human food chain with passage of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) to the normal human intestinal microbiota and hence to other pathogenic bacteria causative human disease. Therefore, we pursued in this study to unravel the frequency and the quinolone resistance determining region, mecA and cfr genes of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), methi

The Complexity of erm-Mediated Resistance: Structural and Functional Perspectives From β-Hemolytic Streptococci.

Macrolide overuse and resulting resistance crippled the applicability of one of the most important and successful classes of antibiotics. The rising incidence of invasive infections caused by β-hemolytic group A and group B streptococci have been paralleled with marked increases in erythromycin and clindamycin resistance. As a result, resistant invasive group A and group B Streptococcus infections have been classified by the CDC as a concerning level threat since 2019. Acquisition of erythromycin resistance methylase (erm) genes is a major contributor of the MLSB [macrolide (i.e., erythromycin

Structural and genomic insights into erythromycin and clindamycin resistance of group B Streptococcus isolates in rural West Virginia, United States.

INTRODUCTION: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading etiological agent of neonatal sepsis and meningitis, as well as invasive infections that predominately affect adults over 65 and people with comorbidities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) nationwide surveillance has identified rising clindamycin and erythromycin resistance as a concerning level threat for invasive GBS infections. West Virginia (WV) is a rural state outside the CDC catchment area, therefore, we investigated 65 WV-GBS isolates identified in clinical specimens from various sources for serotype distribut

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of commensal staphylococci isolated from young volunteers in Alexandria, Egypt.

Nasally colonized staphylococci carry antibiotic resistance genes and may lead to serious opportunistic infections. We are investigating nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococci other than S. aureus (SOSA) among young volunteers in Egypt to determine their risk potential. Nasal swabs collected over 1 week in June 2019 from 196 volunteers were cultured for staphylococcus isolation. The participants were interviewed to assess sex, age, general health, hospitalization and personal hygiene habits. Identification was carried out using biochemical tests and VITEK 2 automated system.
