Prevalence of blood parasites in cattle from wilayates of Annaba and El Tarf east Algeria.

Between June and September 2002, a preliminary study was conducted to assess the prevalence of blood parasites of cattle in eastern Algeria. Fifty-four bovines of different genotypes were submitted to clinical examination. From each animal, blood smears were made and stained by Giemsa. Four species of parasites, namely Theileria annulata, T. orientalis, Babesia bovis and Anaplasma marginale were encountered. Fifty animals carried single or multiple infections with blood parasites and four were found negative. The rate of single infections (72.3%, n = 39) was almost three times higher than mult

The effect of dexamethasone and promethazine in combination with buparvaquone in the management of East Coast fever.

The effects of dexamethasone and promethazine on the amelioration of pulmonary oedema in East Coast fever were investigated. The clinical effects of these drugs were further investigated when used in conjunction with the antitheilerial drug, buparvaquone. In the first experiment, 15 crossbred (Friesian x Zebu) steers were divided into four groups. With the exception of the animals in group IV, that served as a control group all the others were infected with Theileria parva sporozoites. On the second day of the febrile reaction, the steers in groups I and II were treated with dexamethasone (0.1

Tick-borne parasitic diseases in cattle: current knowledge and prospective risk analysis related to the ongoing evolution in French cattle farming systems.

Parasitic diseases, like babesiosis and theileriosis are transmitted by ticks: their occurrence is therefore linked to the size of the tick stock and the seasonality of the vectors. Babesia divergens bovine babesiosis transmitted by Ixodes ricinus is widespread and often reported in France. Serological prevalence is high, ranging from 20 to 80% according to the farms. Clinical incidence is low: around 0.4% for the whole cattle population. The endemic situation is unstable and clinical cases occur more frequently with farming system modifications. L. ricinus is a tick essentially found in woodl

Laboratory and field investigations into the Theileria parva carrier-state in cattle in Zimbabwe.

The Theileria parva carrier-state in cattle on commercial farms on Zimbabwe was investigated using parasitological and serological methods. The proportion of cattle showing Theileria piroplasms on two farms, which had recent histories of disease outbreaks, were 64% (n = 106, total of heifers and weaned calves examined) and 71.5% (n = 60) while the proportion of T. parva antibodies for the same animals were 59% and 98.5%, respectively. On four farms where no cases of the disease occurred for over 10 years, the average proportion of animals showing piroplasms and antibodies were 55.4% (range 32-

Identification of candidate vaccine antigens of bovine hemoparasites Theileria parva and Babesia bovis by use of helper T cell clones.

Current vaccines for bovine hemoparasites utilize live attenuated organisms or virulent organisms administered concurrently with antiparasitic drugs. Although such vaccines can be effective, for most hemoparasites the mechanisms of acquired resistance to challenge infection with heterologous parasite isolates have not been clearly defined. Selection of potentially protective antigens has traditionally made use of antibodies to identify immunodominant proteins. However, numerous studies have indicated that induction of high antibody titers neither predicts the ability of an antigen to confer pr

Indigenous and crossbred cattle--a comparison of resistance to ticks and implications for their strategic control in Zimbabwe.

A comparison of the tick resistance of indigenous Mashona and crossbred Afrikander x Sussex oxen following natural tick infestation indicated that significantly more African blue ticks Boophilus decoloratus were found on the crossbred than the indigenous cattle (P < 0.05). The two groups of cattle were exposed to Babesia bigemina and Theileria taurotragi as indicated by high antibody titres on the indirect fluorescent antibody test, but no antibodies could be demonstrated to Anaplasma marginale and T. parva bovis despite the presence of their vectors. Epidemiology of theileriosis in calves in an endemic area of Kenya.

Thirty-one calves born into five Maasai zebu cattle herds over a period of 1 month in the Trans-Mara Division of Kenya, endemic for theileriosis, were recruited for an intensive study of theileriosis. No calves up to 6 months of age died but all developed Theileria infections as judged by slide examination and serology. Parasitosis by T. mutans schizonts in lymph node smears was usually higher than that of T. parva. The T. mutans schizonts usually occurred at an earlier age but persisted at a patent level for a shorter time than those of T. parva. Serological findings using the indirect fluore

Genetic diversity of Theileria spp. in deer (Artiodactyla: Cervidae) from Brazil.

Babesia spp. and Theileria spp. are tick-borne apicomplexan protozoa that can cause disease in animals and humans. Deer are considered reservoirs for a wide variety of Piroplasmida species, including some potentially zoonotic. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and genetic diversity of piroplasmids in wild deer sampled in four Brazilian states (São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and Goiás). For this purpose, extracted DNA samples from 181 deer buffy coat samples (138 Blastocerus dichotomus, 26 Subulo gouazoubira, 4 Mazama jucunda, 3 Mazama rufa and 10 Ozotocerus bezoarticus) wer

The first study of the prevalence and genetic diversity of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in horses in Russia.

Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a global worldwide infection, which can lead to the death of animals. Despite the causative agents of EP being well studied, there are no data on the distribution and genetic characteristics of EP agents in any region of Russia. In this study, blood samples from 750 horses from Novosibirsk province, Irkutsk province, and Altai region of Russian Siberia were examined for the presence of EP agents. Theileria equi and Babesia caballi were detected in all examined regions, with mean prevalence rates of 60.4% and 7.2%, respectively. The identified pathogens were genetic

Babesia bicornis, Theileria bicornis and Theileria equi in metapopulations of two black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) subspecies in South Africa and their potential impact on conservation.

The two black rhinoceros subspecies (Diceros bicornis bicornis and D. b. minor) in South African conservation areas are managed as separate metapopulations. Since infection with Babesia bicornis can be fatal in black rhinoceroses, occurrence of this and other piroplasms in the two metapopulations was determined to assess possible risk. Blood specimens were collected from 156 black rhinoceroses: 80 from D. b. bicornis and 76 from D. b. minor. DNA was extracted; the V4 hypervariable region of the parasite 18S rRNA gene was amplified and subjected to the Reverse Line Blot (RLB) hybridization assa

Repeated high dose imidocarb dipropionate treatment did not eliminate Babesia caballi from naturally infected horses as determined by PCR-reverse line blot hybridization.

Imidocarb treatment of horses infected with Babesia caballi is supposed to eliminate the infection, but data on the efficacy of this treatment is scarce. The study presented here concerns four Paso Fino horses, which were imported into the island of Curacao on the basis of a piroplasmosis negative complement fixation test (CFT). Upon re-testing with an indirect fluorescent antibody test immediately after arrival in Curacao, two horses appeared to have antibodies to B. caballi and all horses had antibodies to Theileria equi. Subsequent testing with polymerase chain reaction combined with a reve
