Spatial hearing adaptation in congenital and acquired single-sided deafness.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial hearing depends on binaural integration of interaural time and level differences and monaural spectral cues. Single-sided deafness (SSD) disrupts this process, impairing localization and speech perception. Congenital (SSDc) and acquired (SSDa) SSD provide unique models for studying cortical adaptation, while cochlear implantation (CI) offers partial restoration of binaural hearing. This study examined differences in localization performance and response promptness across SSDc, SSDa, and SSD-CI listeners. METHODS: Thirty-one SSD listeners (9 SSDc, 11 SSDa, and 11 SSD-CI)

Metagenomic analysis of the middle ear microbiome: A next-generation sequencing approach in pediatric patients with and without effusion.

OBJECTIVES: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is one of the most common causes of reversible hearing loss in childhood. In recent years, host-microbiota interactions and alterations in microbiota composition associated with health and disease have gained increasing attention in the context of OME. This study aimed to investigate the bacterial microbiota composition of middle ear cavity (MEC) samples obtained from pediatric patients with and without OME. Microbiome differences were analyzed according to clinical groups and variables such as age and gender. METHODS: 16S rRNA-based metagenomic se

Anatomic features of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction: a comparative computed tomography study.

BACKGROUND: Investigating the anatomic features of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) is crucial for understanding its etiology and guiding surgical management. This study aimed to compare the computed tomography (CT)-based features of the lacrimal sac fossa (LF) and nasolacrimal duct (NLD) in CNLDO patients against matched controls. METHODS: This retrospective comparative observational study included 39 CNLDO patients who underwent cranial CT for preoperative evaluation, subdivided into 18 cases with chronic dacryocystitis and 21 cases without. For each patient, an age- and gen

A Three-Year Follow-Up of a Patient With Large Vestibular Aqueduct Syndrome Who Underwent Bilateral Endolymphatic Duct Blockage Surgery.

Large vestibular aqueduct syndrome (LVAS) is a congenital malformation characterized by an abnormally large vestibular aqueduct, diagnosed primarily via CT scans. Patients with LVAS often experience progressive hearing loss and recurrent vertigo, with treatment strategies mirroring those for Meniere's disease. Traditional surgical interventions such as endolymphatic sac decompression (ESD) are common; however, the efficacy of endolymphatic duct blockage (EDB) as an alternative still remains under investigation. We present the case of a female in her 20s who was diagnosed with Meniere's disease

Deficient Recurrent Cortical Processing in Congenital Deafness.

The influence of sensory experience on cortical feedforward and feedback interactions has rarely been studied in the auditory cortex. Previous work has documented a dystrophic effect of deafness in deep cortical layers, and a reduction of interareal couplings between primary and secondary auditory areas in congenital deafness which was particularly pronounced in the top-down direction (from the secondary to the primary area). In the present study, we directly quantified the functional interaction between superficial (supragranular, I to III) and deep (infragranular, V and VI) layers of feline'

Rheumatoid arthritis in a patient with compound heterozygous variants in the COL11A2 gene and progressive hearing loss: A case report.

RATIONALE: Collagen type XI alpha 2 chain is a component of type XI collagen and is expressed in various tissues including articular cartilage and tectorial membrane of the cochlea. Variants in the COL11A2 gene, which encodes collagen type XI alpha 2 chain, has been reported to cause hearing loss and has been associated with osteoarthritis and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the spine. Despite the importance of type XI collagen in the joints, association of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with COL11A2 has not been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient is a 60-year-old femal

Early Caffeine Administration and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: Although caffeine use for apnea of prematurity is well studied, the long-term safety and benefit of routine early caffeine administration has not been explored. Our objective was to determine the association between early (within 2 days of birth) versus late caffeine exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants. METHODS: Infants of <29 weeks' gestation born between April 2009 and September 2011 and admitted to Canadian Neonatal Network units and then assessed at Canadian Neonatal Follow-up Network centers were studied. Neonates who received caffeine were divided int

Novel familial mutation of LRP5 causing high bone mass: Genetic analysis, clinical presentation, and characterization of bone matrix mineralization.

The Wnt signalling pathway is a critical regulator of bone mass and quality. Several heterozygous mutations in the LRP5 gene, a Wnt co-receptor, causing high bone mass (LRP5-HBM) have been described to date. The pathogenic mechanism is thought to be a gain-of-function caused by impaired inhibition of the canonical Wnt signalling pathway, thereby leading to increased bone formation. We report the cases of two affected family members, a 53-year-old mother and her 23-year-old daughter, with high bone mass (T-scores mother: lumbar spine 11.4, femoral neck 10.5; T-scores daughter: lumbar spine 5.4,

[A clinical study on 106 infant cases who received detailed hearing tests after newborn hearing screening].

Newborn hearing screening (NHS) has been conducted widely in Japan in the last decade, however, there seems to be some confusion regarding the significance of NHS or management of the results obtained from NHS among clinics and practitioners. The system of NHS in Japan should be improved and refined through continuous evaluation of NHS, in terms of cost effectiveness in particular, so that NHS can be conducted more efficiently and effectively. To achieve this goal, the authors thought it important to clarify the current status and roles of our department as a facility for infants with congenit

Effects of morphine on sensory-evoked responses recorded from central gray, reticular formation, thalamus, hypothalamus, limbic system, basal ganglia, dorsal raphe, locus ceruleus, and pineal body.

Field potential recordings of acoustic and photic-evoked responses were obtained from 15 brain sites of freely behaving unanesthetized rats previously implanted stereotaxically with permanent electrodes. Several dosages of morphine (1, 5, 10, 30, and 50 mg/kg) were examined. The activities recorded from all the structures in this study, except the cochlear nucleus (CoN), were affected by morphine. Different sensitivities to morphine threshold were observed between structures, and several structures exhibited dose-related patterns (ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), caudate nuucleus (CN), central

Facial nerve lying lateral to ossicles in one case of congenital aural atresia.

An abnormal facial nerve (FN) course can be found in a significant number of patients with congenital aural atresia. However, the literature does not include any cases in which the tympanic portion of the FN was displaced lateral to ossicles. We report a unique case of unilateral congenital aural atresia with this rare FN displacement. A review of the existing literature and a discussion are also provided.

Sudden hearing loss following non-petrous craniotomy.

We present two patients with known otosclerosis undergoing craniotomy for conditions unrelated to the temporal bone who experienced sudden sensorineural hearing loss. In both patients, the hearing loss was noted immediately post-operatively and there was no subsequent recovery. Sudden hearing loss is a rare complication of non-otologic, non-cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. To our knowledge it has not been described in patients with otosclerosis undergoing craniotomy. This is a rare event that may occur in patients with vulnerable ears, such as those with otosclerosis or pre-existing sensorineur

AAV1-hOTOF gene therapy for autosomal recessive deafness 9: a single-arm trial.

BACKGROUND: Autosomal recessive deafness 9, caused by mutations of the OTOF gene, is characterised by congenital or prelingual, severe-to-complete, bilateral hearing loss. However, no pharmacological treatment is currently available for congenital deafness. In this Article, we report the safety and efficacy of gene therapy with an adeno-associated virus (AAV) serotype 1 carrying a human OTOF transgene (AAV1-hOTOF) as a treatment for children with autosomal recessive deafness 9. METHODS: This single-arm, single-centre trial enrolled children (aged 1-18 years) with severe-to-complete hearing lo
