What Lies Beyond Neuroticism? An Examination of the Unique Contributions of Social-Cognitive Vulnerabilities to Internalizing Disorders.

Extensive research has identified various social-cognitive vulnerabilities for internalizing disorders. However, few studies have assessed multiple disorders simultaneously, so it is unclear whether these vulnerabilities are transdiagnostic or specific risk factors. Their unique associations with disorders are also uncertain, given that they correlate strongly with neuroticism and one other. Psychiatric outpatients completed self-report and interview measures of six disorders (depression, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, social anxiety, panic, obsessive-compulsive d

Social disinhibition is a heritable subphenotype of tics in Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To identify heritable symptom-based subtypes of Tourette syndrome (TS). METHODS: Forty-nine motor and phonic tics were examined in 3,494 individuals (1,191 TS probands and 2,303 first-degree relatives). Item-level exploratory factor and latent class analyses (LCA) were used to identify tic-based subtypes. Heritabilities of the subtypes were estimated, and associations with clinical characteristics were examined. RESULTS: A 6-factor exploratory factor analysis model provided the best fit, which paralleled the somatotopic representation of the basal ganglia, distinguished simple fro

A comparative study of early maladaptive schemas in obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder.

Schema theory and therapy may be an additional therapeutic approach to identify and treat chronic psychological problems, namely early maladaptive schemas (EMSs), in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and panic disorder (PAD). In the current study, we investigated the characteristics in EMSs between patients with OCD and PAD. Fifty-one patients with OCD, 46 patients with PAD, and 70 normal controls participated in this study. EMSs and depressive symptoms were measured using the Young Schema Questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), respectively. Analysis of covarian

Psychopharmacological therapies in dermatology.

When patients with psychodermatologic disorders present in clinic, the dermatologist can refer them to psychiatrists or other mental health care professionals. However, it is often the case that these patients will refuse a psychiatric referral because they either do not believe they have a disorder of psychiatric nature or they feel there is societal stigma associated with psychiatric illness. Therefore, it is essential for dermatologists to understand the common classifications for psychodermatological cases and to know how to optimally treat these patients with pharmacotherapy. The intent o

Anxiety and alcohol use disorders: comorbidity and treatment considerations.

The co-occurrence of anxiety disorders and alcohol use disorders (AUDs) is relatively common and is associated with a complex clinical presentation. Sound diagnosis and treatment planning requires that clinicians have an integrated understanding of the developmental pathways and course of this comorbidity. Moreover, standard interventions for anxiety disorders or AUDs may need to be modified and combined in targeted ways to accommodate the unique needs of people who have both disorders. Optimal combination of evidence-based treatments should be based on a comparative balance that considers the

A controlled single case study with repeated fMRI measurements during the treatment of a patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder: testing the nonlinear dynamics approach to psychotherapy.

There is increasing evidence that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with a dysfunction of cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical neuronal circuits. In order to examine treatment-related changes in neuronal processes, a drug-naive female patient with OCD (subtype: washing/contamination fear) and an age- and gender-matched healthy control were repeatedly tested using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during the presentation of a symptom provocation task. Patient-specific visual stimuli of symptom provoking situations were compared with disgust provoking and neutral pictures.

Equivalent current dipole of word repetition effects in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

We investigated cortical source localization of word repetition effects in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) by employing the equivalent current dipole (ECD) model with high-density 128 channels EEG and individual MRI as a realistic head model. Twelve OCD patients and 13 healthy control subjects performed a word/nonword discrimination task, in which the words and nonwords were visually presented, and some of the words appeared twice with a lag of one or five items. During the 200-500 ms post-stimulus period, the control group showed more positivity in the ERPs elicited by old w

Neurocognitive correlates of psychotherapeutic treatment response in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: Results from the TECTO trial.

BACKGROUND: Atypical neurocognitive functioning is consistently reported in adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), while studies in childhood/early-onset OCD show smaller and more selective effects. Neurobiological models of OCD implicate aberrant activation within cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits, while related executive function (EF) alterations have been proposed as potential mechanisms underlying OCD symptomatology. However, neurocognitive correlates of treatment response in pediatric OCD have not been examined across different psychotherapeutic interventions in a

Q-single: Linking functional impairment to problematic internet use through a single-question approach.

BACKGROUND: Short versions of problematic internet use (PIU) questionnaires may provide a convenient and effective way of assessing internet-related problems in various contexts, ranging from research to clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate whether single yes/no question (Q-single) regarding "functional impairment due to PIU" could serve as a screening tool to indicate the potential absence of PIU, given the lack of functional impairment. METHODS: Data from two online studies (N = 524 and N = 272) assessing internet-related behaviors among students were used for the ana

Long-term efficacy of an optimized online gambling self-exclusion procedure with extended suspension of commercial solicitations: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Most individuals self-excluding from gambling have lost control over their gambling behavior. Commercial solicitations are prohibited during the self-exclusion period, but resume immediately afterwards. The self-exclusion system appears insufficient, particularly for short self-exclusions and among the heaviest gamblers. We assessed the impact of extending suspension of commercial solicitations on gambling intensity. METHODS: In this parallel randomized study, we included 2548 French online gamblers who self-excluded for up to 3 months from May-November 2022. They were assigned 1:

Therapists' Role in Patient Adherence to Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapies (iCBTs) are typically categorized into 2 types: therapist-assisted and self-guided. Both formats have accumulated substantial evidence supporting their cost-effectiveness and efficacy in treating a range of mental health conditions. However, therapist-assisted iCBTs tend to show lower dropout rates than self-guided versions. The relatively high dropout rates in self-guided programs suggest that some degree of therapist involvement may be necessary to improve engagement and treatment adherence. Yet, the specific reasons for therapist sup

Neuromodulation for Tourette syndrome: current techniques and future perspectives.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic tic disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Neuropsychiatric symptoms are nearly universal in TS, particularly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. TS can have substantial effects on quality of life, social and intellectual development, opportunities, relationships, and more. Treatment options are limited; the most common being behavioral therapy and pharmacological interventions, such as antipsychotics and anti-adrenergic agents, often yielding unsatisfactory benefits. Neuromodulation, the alteration of neural

Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials: Antidepressants for Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

In previously randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the efficacy of antidepressants in restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), outcomes overwhelmingly showed no benefits of antidepressants studied in the larger multisite RCTs over placebo. However, the positive effect of antidepressants in the RRBs found in the small preliminary studies requires confirmation in larger trials. We aimed to systematically review the efficacy of antidepressants in the treatment of RRBs in ASD by including RCTs from the SCOPUS, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Controlled Trials Regist

Relationship between nonexercise activity and mood in patients with eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Many patients with eating disorders (EDs) engage in excessive and compulsive physical activity (pathological exercise, PE) to regulate negative mood or to "burn calories." PE can lead to negative health consequences. Non-exercise activity (NEA) bears the potential to serve as intervention target to counteract PE and problematic eating behaviors since it has been associated with positive mood effects. However, to date, there is no investigation on whether the positive link between NEA and mood seen in the healthy translates to patients with ED. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To study pote

Assortative mating and parental genetic relatedness contribute to the pathogenicity of variably expressive variants.

We examined more than 97,000 families from four neurodevelopmental disease cohorts and the UK Biobank to identify phenotypic and genetic patterns in parents contributing to neurodevelopmental disease risk in children. We identified within- and cross-disorder correlations between six phenotypes in parents and children, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (R = 0.32-0.38, p < 10-126). We also found that measures of sub-clinical autism features in parents are associated with several autism severity measures in children, including biparental mean Social Responsiveness Scale scores and proband Rep

Word recognition memory and serum levels of Borna disease virus specific circulating immune complexes in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) is a non-segmented, negative-strand RNA virus that persistently infects mammals including humans. BoDV-1 worldwide occurring strains display highly conserved genomes with overlapping genetic signatures between those of either human or animal origin. BoDV-1 infection may cause behavioral and cognitive disturbances in animals but has also been found in human major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the impact of BoDV-1 on memory functions in OCD is unknown. METHOD: To evaluate the cognitive impact of BoDV-1 in OCD, event-relat
