A preliminary investigation of the impact of maternal obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder on parenting and children.

Although there is evidence for the intergenerational transmission of anxiety disorders, there is little research in relation to specific parental disorders. This study evaluated three groups of mothers with at least one child aged 7-14, defined in terms of maternal obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; n=23), panic disorder (n=18), and healthy controls (n=20). Parental perceptions and symptomatology, general and disorder-specific child symptoms and mother-child interactions were investigated using self-report, informant report and independent assessment. Mothers with OCD and panic disorder expre

A pilot study of impulsivity and compulsivity in pathological gambling.

We examined the relationship between gambling severity, impulsivity and obsessionality/compulsivity in 38 pathological gamblers, representing the complete Minnesota sample of a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial of paroxetine for the treatment of pathological gambling (PG), using Pearson correlations and linear regression models at baseline and treatment endpoint. At baseline, Pathological Gambling Modification of the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (PG-YBOCS) scores correlated significantly with those of the Eysenck Impulsiveness Questionnaire (EIQ) Impulsiveness subscale and

A controlled positron emission tomography study of obsessive and neutral auditory stimulation in obsessive-compulsive disorder with checking rituals.

Ten nondepressed patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) who were characterized by predominant checking rituals were compared with 10 age- and sex-matched control subjects. Hemispheric and regional cerebral blood flow levels (rCBF) were measured with positron emission tomography (H2 15O) across four conditions: rest, auditory stimulation with idiosyncratic normal or abnormal obsession, auditory stimulation with neutral verbal stimuli, and rest. Order of neutral and obsessive stimulation was randomized. Higher subjective responses to obsessive than to neutral stimulation were found in

Neurocognitive correlates of psychotherapeutic treatment response in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: Results from the TECTO trial.

BACKGROUND: Atypical neurocognitive functioning is consistently reported in adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), while studies in childhood/early-onset OCD show smaller and more selective effects. Neurobiological models of OCD implicate aberrant activation within cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits, while related executive function (EF) alterations have been proposed as potential mechanisms underlying OCD symptomatology. However, neurocognitive correlates of treatment response in pediatric OCD have not been examined across different psychotherapeutic interventions in a

Case Report: Repeated low doses of psilocybin reduce perceived symptom severity but fail to restore cognitive flexibility in a case of severe obsessive-compulsive disorder: an observational case study of identical twins.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can present significant challenges to individuals mental health, characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive maladaptive behaviors. Recent research into alternative treatments has highlighted psychedelics, notably psilocybin, for their potential therapeutic benefits in various psychiatric disorders, including OCD. This case study evaluated the impact of self-administered, low-doses of psilocybin, commonly referred to as microdosing, on symptom reduction and cognitive flexibility in OCD, with a focus on identical twins discordant for the co

Q-single: Linking functional impairment to problematic internet use through a single-question approach.

BACKGROUND: Short versions of problematic internet use (PIU) questionnaires may provide a convenient and effective way of assessing internet-related problems in various contexts, ranging from research to clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate whether single yes/no question (Q-single) regarding "functional impairment due to PIU" could serve as a screening tool to indicate the potential absence of PIU, given the lack of functional impairment. METHODS: Data from two online studies (N = 524 and N = 272) assessing internet-related behaviors among students were used for the ana

Long-term efficacy of an optimized online gambling self-exclusion procedure with extended suspension of commercial solicitations: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Most individuals self-excluding from gambling have lost control over their gambling behavior. Commercial solicitations are prohibited during the self-exclusion period, but resume immediately afterwards. The self-exclusion system appears insufficient, particularly for short self-exclusions and among the heaviest gamblers. We assessed the impact of extending suspension of commercial solicitations on gambling intensity. METHODS: In this parallel randomized study, we included 2548 French online gamblers who self-excluded for up to 3 months from May-November 2022. They were assigned 1:

Therapists' Role in Patient Adherence to Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapies (iCBTs) are typically categorized into 2 types: therapist-assisted and self-guided. Both formats have accumulated substantial evidence supporting their cost-effectiveness and efficacy in treating a range of mental health conditions. However, therapist-assisted iCBTs tend to show lower dropout rates than self-guided versions. The relatively high dropout rates in self-guided programs suggest that some degree of therapist involvement may be necessary to improve engagement and treatment adherence. Yet, the specific reasons for therapist sup

Neuromodulation for Tourette syndrome: current techniques and future perspectives.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic tic disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Neuropsychiatric symptoms are nearly universal in TS, particularly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. TS can have substantial effects on quality of life, social and intellectual development, opportunities, relationships, and more. Treatment options are limited; the most common being behavioral therapy and pharmacological interventions, such as antipsychotics and anti-adrenergic agents, often yielding unsatisfactory benefits. Neuromodulation, the alteration of neural

Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials: Antidepressants for Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

In previously randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the efficacy of antidepressants in restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), outcomes overwhelmingly showed no benefits of antidepressants studied in the larger multisite RCTs over placebo. However, the positive effect of antidepressants in the RRBs found in the small preliminary studies requires confirmation in larger trials. We aimed to systematically review the efficacy of antidepressants in the treatment of RRBs in ASD by including RCTs from the SCOPUS, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Controlled Trials Regist

Relationship between nonexercise activity and mood in patients with eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Many patients with eating disorders (EDs) engage in excessive and compulsive physical activity (pathological exercise, PE) to regulate negative mood or to "burn calories." PE can lead to negative health consequences. Non-exercise activity (NEA) bears the potential to serve as intervention target to counteract PE and problematic eating behaviors since it has been associated with positive mood effects. However, to date, there is no investigation on whether the positive link between NEA and mood seen in the healthy translates to patients with ED. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To study pote

Assortative mating and parental genetic relatedness contribute to the pathogenicity of variably expressive variants.

We examined more than 97,000 families from four neurodevelopmental disease cohorts and the UK Biobank to identify phenotypic and genetic patterns in parents contributing to neurodevelopmental disease risk in children. We identified within- and cross-disorder correlations between six phenotypes in parents and children, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (R = 0.32-0.38, p < 10-126). We also found that measures of sub-clinical autism features in parents are associated with several autism severity measures in children, including biparental mean Social Responsiveness Scale scores and proband Rep

Word recognition memory and serum levels of Borna disease virus specific circulating immune complexes in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) is a non-segmented, negative-strand RNA virus that persistently infects mammals including humans. BoDV-1 worldwide occurring strains display highly conserved genomes with overlapping genetic signatures between those of either human or animal origin. BoDV-1 infection may cause behavioral and cognitive disturbances in animals but has also been found in human major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the impact of BoDV-1 on memory functions in OCD is unknown. METHOD: To evaluate the cognitive impact of BoDV-1 in OCD, event-relat

Organizational science and cybersecurity: abundant opportunities for research at the interface.

Despite technological innovations, clinical expertise remains the cornerstone of psychiatry. A clinical expert does not only have general textbook knowledge, but is sensitive to what is demanded for the individual patient in a particular situation. A method that can do justice to the subjective and situation-specific nature of clinical expertise is ethnography. Effective deep brain stimulation (DBS) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) involves an interpretive, evaluative process of optimizing stimulation parameters, which makes it an interesting case to study clinical expertise. The aim of
