Congenital or early-onset unilateral hearing loss (UHL) can disrupt the normal development of the auditory system. In extreme cases of UHL (i.e., single sided deafness), consistent cochlear implant use during sensitive periods resulted in cortical reorganization that partially reversed the detrimental effects of unilateral sensory deprivation. There is a gap in knowledge, however, regarding cortical plasticity i.e. the brain's capacity to adapt, reorganize, and develop binaural pathways in milder degrees of UHL rehabilitated by a hearing aid (HA). The current study was set to investigate early

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of rotary chair, video head impulse test (vHIT), and vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) responses in children with normal hearing (NH) and children with cochlear implants (CIs).
METHOD: Retrospective analysis of 66 children (33 males, M age = 11.4 years, range: 3-18 years) seen in a tertiary clinic and/or research laboratory who completed rotary chair, VEMP, and vHIT across two test sessions between 2012 and 2019. The stability of these measures was compared between two groups: children with NH (n = 35) and children wit

OBJECTIVES: To (1) identify the etiologies and risk factors of the patient cohort and determine the degree to which they reflected the incidence for children with hearing loss and (2) quantify practice management patterns in three catchment areas of the United States with available centers of excellence in pediatric hearing loss.
DESIGN: Medical information for 307 children with bilateral, mild-to-severe hearing loss was examined retrospectively. Children were participants in the Outcomes of Children with Hearing Loss (OCHL) study, a 5-year longitudinal study that recruited subjects at three

BACKGROUND: Auditory implantation into the inner ear is increasingly performed for a variety of indications. Infective complications are rare, but when they occur they can have devastating consequences.
CASE REPORTS: This paper reports two cases where vestibular sequestration of the bony labyrinth developed following implantation into the middle ear.
CONCLUSION: To the authors' knowledge, these are the first reported cases where vestibular sequestration has resulted from auditory implant surgery. This paper outlines the radiological changes characteristic of this pathology. It also describes

The objective of this study was to present 5 years of surgical experience, and the extended results of hearing preservation (based on 3-year follow-up), with the Med-El Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) in which the floating mass transducer (FMT) is placed directly against the round window membrane, and the fascia is used only as covering tissue to keep it in position. A retrospective survey of surgical and audiological data was conducted to evaluate the performance and stability of patient hearing, with audiometric measurements performed over fixed time intervals up to 36 months. 21 patients, aged 19

BACKGROUND: National guidelines for aetiologic investigation of childhood deafness were developed as the Newborn Hearing Screening Program (NHSP) was being implemented in the United Kingdom. This guidance document was expected to be incorporated into the operational procedure of the NHSP.
METHOD: This criterion-based audit compared local care set against developed guidelines that can be used to assess the appropriateness of specific investigations, services and outcomes. Data on children diagnosed to have sensorineural deafness from March 2002-2004 were extracted from an established computeri

The hair cells of the cochlea (neuroepithelium) represent the primary target in most drug-induced ototoxic adverse effects on hearing (e.g. aminoglycoside antibiotics). To what extent an exogenically-induced morphologic damage to hair cells is reversible is not known. In aging structurally altered hair cells can persist for years likewisely not any longer participating in sensory transduction as the hair cells degenerate, secondary changes occur in the spiral ganglion cells and the neuronal pathways. Following heavy metal poisoning an adverse effect is observed on both central and peripheral i

OBJECTIVES: Bone conduction devices (BCD) have been commercially available since the 1980s for patients with conductive hearing loss (CHL), mixed hearing loss (MHL), or single-sided deafness (SSD). BCDs significantly improve the hearing capacity of patients regardless of age, which has a positive impact on their quality of life, mental health, education, and work performance. BCDs are categorized as percutaneous or transcutaneous solutions based on the attachment method. Selecting the optimal solution for patients requires consideration of audiological outcomes, guidelines, safety, patient pre

OBJECTIVES: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the leading nongenetic cause of sensorineural hearing loss (HL). However, there are no universally accepted approaches to diagnosis, follow-up and treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the main characteristics of cCMV-infected children, focusing on their management and long-term hearing outcomes.
METHODS: This retrospective study included all children with cCMV infection who were referred to a third-level referral audiologic center for a 6-year hearing follow-up. The main information collected from the medical records included gestat

Active implantable hearing devices were primarily developed for sensorineural hearing loss. The vibrator coupling mechanisms were oriented towards normal middle ear anatomy and function. The aim of this project was to modify the only fully implantable hearing device with an implantable microphone for application in congenital auricular atresia, Carina™, and to introduce the modified device into the clinic. A special prosthesis was developed for the transducer and its individual coupling achieved by a special cramping system. The system was implanted in 5 patients with congenital auricular atre

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), also known as presbycusis, is one of the most prevalent long-term sensory difficulties in older people. It affects more than two-thirds of people over 70. In addition to communication challenges, ARHL has recently been revealed as a possible modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia. Comprehending this link is crucial for creating preventative interventions and maintaining healthy cognitive aging. This narrative review intended to analyze the evidence comprehensively relating age-related hearing loss (ARHL) with cognitive decline, define the pos

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability.
METHODS: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecaste

IMPORTANCE: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is a major cause of childhood deafness. Most cCMV infections are not diagnosed without newborn screening, resulting in missed opportunities for directed care.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the cost-effectiveness of universal and targeted newborn cCMV screening programs compared with no cCMV screening.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Models were constructed using rates and outcomes from prospective cohort studies of newborn cCMV screening in US postpartum care and early hearing programs. Costs of laboratory testing, treatment, and hearing lo
