Perceived Impact of Covid-19 Across Different Mental Disorders: A Study on Disorder-Specific Symptoms, Psychosocial Stress and Behavior.

The recent outbreak of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has plunged countries across the world into crisis. Both in the general population and in specific subgroups such as infected people or health care workers, studies have reported increased symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress. However, the reactions of individuals with mental disorders to Covid-19 have largely been neglected. The present study therefore aimed to investigate the perceived impact of Covid-19 and its psychological consequences on people with mental disorders. In this online survey, participants were asked to evaluate

Psychological and Behavioral Aspects of Primary and Reoperative Surgery: a 6-Month Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Problematic eating behaviors and general psychopathology have been associated with poor weight loss after bariatric surgery. However, little is known about how these aspects impact weight loss outcomes for the increasing number of patients undergoing reoperative surgeries. This study compares disordered eating and weight-related outcomes before and 6 months after surgery in patients undergoing primary (P-Group) and reoperative bariatric surgery (R-Group). METHODS: This longitudinal study assessed 122 P-Group and 116 R-Group patients before and 6 months after surgery. The assessmen

[Bipolar disorders and comorbid anxiety: prognostic impact and therapeutic challenges].

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disorders are among the main psychiatric conditions co-occuring with bipolar disorders. Many clinical and epidemiological studies have found much higher prevalence rates of generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder in bipolar patients than in the general population, regardless of age. In the National Comorbidity Survey for instance, the diagnosis of at least one anxiety disorder was made for nearly 90% of bipolar subjects. Several issues arise from this high comorbidity, such as the way an

A case of severe adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder treated with inpatient hospitalization, risperidone and sertraline.

BACKGROUND: The initial treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has generally been limited to serotonergic agents, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), or a combination of the two. These findings were supported by the POTS study for OCD in children and adolescents. However, treatment with serotonergic agents or CBT can take several weeks before benefit is seen; severe cases of OCD may require more immediate treatment. CASE REPORT: The authors present a case of severe OCD in an adolescent that required immediate treatment due to her critical medical condition. The patient's symptoms in

Abnormalities of visual processing and frontostriatal systems in body dysmorphic disorder.

CONTEXT: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric disorder in which individuals are preoccupied with perceived defects in their appearance, often related to their face. Little is known about its pathophysiology, although early research provides evidence of abnormal visual processing. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with BDD have abnormal patterns of brain activation when visually processing their own face with high, low, or normal spatial resolution. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: A university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Seventeen right-handed medication-free subjects wit

Rates and types of psychiatric disorders in perinatally human immunodeficiency virus-infected youth and seroreverters.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine 1) the prevalence of psychiatric and substance use disorders in perinatally HIV-infected (HIV+) adolescents and 2) the association between HIV infection and these mental health outcomes by comparing HIV+ youths to HIV exposed but uninfected youths (HIV-) from similar communities. METHODS: Data for this paper come from the baseline interview of a longitudinal study of mental health outcomes in 9-16 year old perinatally HIV-exposed youths (61% HIV+) and their caregivers. Three hundred forty youths and their primary adult caregivers were recru

Early motor trajectories and distinct psychopathological profiles in adolescents born very and extremely preterm.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, advances in neonatal care have led to a substantial reduction in mortality associated with prematurity. However, preterm birth remains the leading contributor to long-term neurodevelopmental impairment across the lifespan. The present study aimed to longitudinally assess neurodevelopmental outcomes in individuals born very preterm (VPT) or extremely preterm (EPT) and to retrospectively investigate associations between early neurodevelopmental trajectories and psychopathological and functional profiles in adolescence. METHODS: The study included 52 adolescents ag

Deontological morality can be experimentally enhanced by increasing disgust: A transcranial direct current stimulation study.

Previous studies empirically support the existence of a distinctive association between deontological (but not altruistic) guilt and both disgust and obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Given that the neural substrate underlying deontological guilt comprises brain regions strictly implicated in the emotion of disgust (i.e. the insula), the present study aimed to test the hypothesis that indirect stimulation of the insula via transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) would enhance disgust and morality in the deontological domain. A randomized, sham-controlled, within-subject design was use

Symptoms of Psychopathology in Hearing-Impaired Children.

OBJECTIVES: Children with hearing loss are at risk of developing psychopathology, which has detrimental consequences for academic and psychosocial functioning later in life. Yet, the causes of the extensive variability in outcomes are not fully understood. Therefore, the authors wanted to objectify symptoms of psychopathology in children with cochlear implants or hearing aids, and in normally hearing peers, and to identify various risk and protective factors. DESIGN: The large sample (mean age = 11.8 years) included three subgroups with comparable age, gender, socioeconomic status, and nonver

The influence of age at onset and duration of illness on long-term outcome in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a report from the International College of Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (ICOCS).

Several studies reported a negative effect of early onset and long duration of illness on long-term outcome in psychiatric disorders, including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is a prevalent, comorbid and disabling condition, associated with reduced quality of life and overall well-being for affected patients and related caregivers. The present multicenter naturalistic study sought to assess the influence of early onset and duration of illness on long-term outcome in a sample of 376 OCD out-patients worldwide, as part of the "International College of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Diso

A pilot study of telephone cognitive-behavioural therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder in young people.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) is the recommended psychological treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in young people. Access to CBT may be limited by a number of factors, including lack of trained therapists, and geographic or financial factors preventing access to a specialized service. Telephone delivery of CBT represents one way of overcoming some of these accessibility issues. This pilot study describes outcomes for a telephone-based cognitive-behavioural treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in young people. METHOD: Ten participants, aged 13 to 17

Fine-motor skill deficits in childhood predict adulthood tic severity and global psychosocial functioning in Tourette's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Most children with Tourette's syndrome (TS) experience a significant decline in tic symptoms during adolescence. Currently no clinical measures have been identified that can predict whose tic symptoms will persist into adulthood. Patients with TS have deficits on neuropsychological tests involving fine-motor coordination and visual-motor integration. We seek to determine if these neuropsychological tests are useful in predicting future symptom severity. METHODS: Thirty-two children, aged 8-14, with TS underwent clinical evaluation and a focused neuropsychological testing battery c

Speed and accuracy on tests of executive function in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Slowness in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been attributed to intrusive thoughts or meticulousness. Recent research suggests that slowness in OCD may be particularly evident on tests of executive function subserved by frontostriatal circuitry. In the present study, the speed and accuracy of responding on neuropsychological tests of executive functions and psychomotor speed were investigated in 27 non-depressed, unmedicated adults with OCD and 27 healthy controls. The only group difference was that patients took significantly longer to copy a complex geometric design than controls. Thi

Neurochemically informed network control theory reveals energetic dysregulation of altered brain state dynamics in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

AIM: Previous studies assessed dynamic functional connectivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) by the sliding-window approach, limiting sensitivity to rapid neural fluctuations. Moreover, the mechanisms underlying dynamic transitions between brain states also remain unknown. Therefore, the study aimed to explore the dynamic neural mechanisms of OCD by characterizing state dynamic patterns and the underlying energy basis. METHODS: The study recruited 198 OCD patients and 109 healthy controls, characterizing altered state dynamic patterns and underlying control energy in OCD by integrati

Psychological aspects of grazing in adolescents: Psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the Rep(eat)-Q in community and clinical samples.

BACKGROUND: Grazing is a disordered eating behavior associated with poor weight control, increased eating disorder psychopathology, and psychological difficulties in adults. Unfortunately, little is known about grazing in adolescence, which is aggravated by the lack of validated measures for this population. This study investigates the psychological aspects of grazing in adolescence and provides psychometric support for a brief self-report measure, the Rep(eat)-Q. METHODS: A community sample of middle/high school students (n = 358, 55.6% females) and a clinical sample with overweight/obesity
