BACKGROUND: For correction of cubitus varus deformity resulting from supracondylar fracture of the humerus, we developed an operative method with use of a custom-made surgical guide, designed on the basis of 3-dimensional (3D) computer simulation with computed tomography data. The purpose of this study was to investigate the postoperative accuracy of this system in clinical cases.
METHODS: Subjects included 17 consecutive patients (13 males and 4 females) with cubitus varus deformity after supracondylar fracture. Patients underwent 3D corrective osteotomy with use of a custom-made surgical gu

BACKGROUND: The treatment of proximal humerus tumors with endoprostheses is associated with a high risk of implant-related surgical complications. Because of extensive soft-tissue resection and muscular detachment during surgery, instability is the most common serious complication. A reverse total shoulder arthroplasty with a highly constrained design is one option to mitigate instability, but few studies have reported the results of this prosthesis for proximal humerus tumor resections.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What are the short-term functional results of the constrained reverse total should

BACKGROUND: Glenoid bone defects are common after failed arthroplasty or fracture fixation. Allograft or autograft reconstruction may be used to fill defects, however, may have increased failure rates or add to patient morbidity, respectively. We hypothesize that coracoid autograft can effectively fill contained glenoid defects and secondarily hypothesize that coracoid autograft has a low failure rate in early post-operative follow-up.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all patients receiving coracoid autograft for glenoid bone defects during revision shoulder arthroplasty

BACKGROUND: Controversy remains regarding whether humeral neck shaft angle influences tuberosity healing in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for proximal humerus fracture (PHF). This study aimed to compare the tuberosity healing rates between reverse total shoulder arthroplasty using a lateralized and a distalized configuration of the Univers Revers Total Shoulder System for PHFs. The secondary objective was to evaluate functional outcomes based on stem inclination and tuberosity healing status.
METHODS: This randomized controlled trial enrolled patients ≥65 years with a Neer 3- or 4-part

HYPOTHESIS AND BACKGROUND: As the incidence of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) continues to rise, better understanding of the long-term risks and complications is necessary to determine the best choice of implant. The majority (75%) of rTSAs performed in New Zealand use either SMR (Systema Multiplana Randelli; Lima-LTO) or Delta Xtend (DePuy Synthes). The aim of this registry-based study was to compare implant survival, risk of revision, and reasons for revision between the 2 most frequently used rTSA prostheses: SMR and Delta Xtend.
METHODS: Using data from the New Zealand Joint R

BACKGROUND: Early reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) designs demonstrated high glenoid baseplate complication and revision rates. Although contemporary designs have reduced the incidence of glenoid baseplate failures, there are reports of elevated failure risks in RTSA with glenoid bone grafting within the first 2 years. This study aims to evaluate the incidence and etiology of aseptic glenoid baseplate failure with a contemporary central screw baseplate. The null hypothesis is that majority of the baseplate failure occurs within the first 2 years and that use of glenoid bone grafting

BACKGROUND: When patients require reoperation after primary shoulder arthroplasty, revision reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) is most commonly performed. However, defining clinically important improvement in these patients is challenging because benchmarks have not been previously defined. Furthermore, although the minimal clinically important difference and substantial clinical benefit are commonly used to assess clinically relevant success, these metrics are limited by ceiling effects that may cause inaccurate estimates of patient success. Our purpose was to define the minimal and s

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the early outcomes and risk factors of reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on RA patients who had undergone RSA between January 2016 and January 2018. Preoperative glenohumeral joint damage was evaluated according to two radiographic classification systems. The severity of joint damage was estimated using Larsen's method, while the Levigne-Franceschi method was used to assess the type of destruction. Further, we recorded intra- and postoperative complications. Visual Analogue Scale

BACKGROUND: Neer and Foster previously described the inferior capsular shift procedure for treating multidirectional instability of the shoulder and reported preliminary results that were quite satisfactory. The purpose of our study was to perform a longer-term follow-up evaluation of the efficacy of the inferior capsular shift procedure for treating multidirectional instability of the shoulder.
METHODS: An inferior capsular shift procedure was used to treat multidirectional instability of the shoulder in forty-nine patients (fifty-two shoulders). All patients had failed to respond to an exer

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, due to the increase in the number of shoulder arthroplasty procedures performed, revision to reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) has increased by 392%. This rise has been associated with a greater incidence of complications, including implant loosening and bone loss requiring alternative strategies for management of failed arthroplasty with glenoid bone deficiency. The purpose of this article is to review the current literature and compare outcomes of different grafts and custom implants used to address severe glenoid defects for revision of failed shou

BACKGROUND: Pediatric orthopaedic surgery encompasses many areas of subspecialization. To improve patient care, quality improvement efforts should focus on high-volume procedures with high complication rates. This study aims to identify these procedures to better target research and quality-improvement initiatives.
METHODS: Patients undergoing one of the 30 most common orthopaedic procedures in NSQIP pediatric data from 2012 to 2022 were analyzed for 30-day complications, infections, unplanned reoperations, and unplanned readmissions. Multivariable models assessed associations between procedu

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of superior labral anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears remains controversial. Current management utilizes 2 well-established procedures: biceps tenodesis and SLAP repair. This study evaluates the complications associated with arthroscopic SLAP repair vs. an open or arthroscopic biceps tenodesis to further elucidate optimal surgical management.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, the TriNetX database was utilized to evaluate patients who underwent repair of SLAP lesions (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision code: S43.43) from May 15,

INTRODUCTION: The Grammont-style reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) relies on medialization and distalization of the shoulder center of rotation. Lateralized designs have recently gained popularity. The amount of lateralization, however, remains a controversial topic. The purpose of this study was to correlate the change in humeral offset (HO) with outcomes and complications following RSA. We hypothesized that a lateralized HO following RSA would be associated with improved range of motion (ROM), better patient-reported outcomes (PROs), and fewer complications.

High peak bone mass in early adulthood is an important protective factor against osteoporotic fractures in later life, but little is known about the effects of exercise on growing bone. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine at which state of maturity (Tanner stage), the areal bone mineral density (BMD) differences between the playing and nonplaying arms of junior tennis players become obvious, and to clarify in each developmental stage which training and background variables, if any, could explain the interindividual differences in bones' response to mechanical loading. BACKGROUND: Outcomes following revision reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (revision rTSA) are variable, and the risk of re-revision remains considerable. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes and outcome predictors after revision to rTSA following failure of a hemiarthroplasty (HA), anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty, or revision rTSA.
METHODS: After institutional review board approval, a retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent revision rTSA for failed HA, TSA, or rTSA between December 2005 and December 2020, with ≥24 months of follow-up.
