[Fine needle capillary cytology versus fine needle aspiration cytology--a comparison of quality between puncture techniques in the ENT area].

BACKGROUND: Needle aspiration is currently a widely used technique in the diagnosis of unclear lesions in the head and neck region. We present a modified technique of fine needle biopsy in ENT, "fine needle capillary technique". The basics of this technique were developed by Zajdela and coworkers (1987) as a cytological method of fine needle biopsy in benign and malignant mammary tumors. Fine needle capillary technique does not require aspiration of cell samples via negative pressure created by a syringe. A thin 25 G needle (outer diameter 0.50 mm, length 25 mm) is introduced into the lesion w

High-throughput cytochrome P450 (CYP) inhibition screening via a cassette probe-dosing strategy. VI. Simultaneous evaluation of inhibition potential of drugs on human hepatic isozymes CYP2A6, 3A4, 2C9, 2D6 and 2E1.

The inhibition potential of drugs towards five major human hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) isozymes (CYP2A6, 3A4, 2C9, 2D6, and 2E1) was investigated via cassette dosing of the five probe substrates (coumarin, midazolam, tolbutamide, dextromethorphan, and chlorzoxazone) in human liver microsomes using a 96-well plate format. After microsomal incubations had been terminated with formic acid, the five marker metabolites (7-hydroxycoumarin, 1'-hydroxymidazolam, 4-hydroxytolbutamide, dextrorphan, and 6-hydroxychlorzoxazone) were simultaneously quantified using direct injection/online guard cartridge

Endoparasites of European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) in Germany and their zoonotic potential: proposed Capillaria ovoreticulata genetically identified as Capillaria putorii.

BACKGROUND: European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) are frequently infected with a variety of endoparasites. The hedgehogs' synanthropic lifestyle results in frequent contact with pets and humans, posing the risk of parasite spillover from a One Health perspective. METHODS: The present study assessed the endoparasite fauna and excretion intensity of 531 European hedgehogs presented at wildlife rehabilitation centres in Germany. Faecal samples were examined by the combined sedimentation-flotation method, the Baermann technique and FASTest® CRYPTO-GIARDIA Strips (MEGACOR Diagnostik GmbH) from

Effect of an acute glucose overload on Islet cell morphology and secretory function in the toad.

The aim of this work was to study the effect of induced hyperglycemia on islet cell mass and insulin secretion in normal toads. Immunolabeled beta cell area, replication (bromodeoxyuridine) and apoptosis (propidium iodide) rate, islet neogenesis (cytokeratin), and insulin secretion in vitro were measured in adult male specimens of Bufo arenarum during and after interruption of the injection of either a 50% glucose solution (2 g/100 g) or its vehicle for 4 days. Glucose administration caused hyperglycemia (122.6 +/- 16.7 and 508.3 +/- 115.9 mg/dl vs 23.5 +/- 1.26 and 22.8 +/- 1.8 mg/dl, at days

First Report of the Stubby-Root Nematode, Paratrichodorus teres, from Potato in the Columbia Basin of Washington State.

Stubby-root nematodes of the genus Paratrichodorus are migratory ectoparasites that cause stunted and deformed roots. They also transmit Tobacco rattle virus, the causal agent of corky ringspot disease in potato. Thus, they are important to the potato industry in the Pacific Northwest, including the Columbia Basin of Washington state, which is one of the largest potato-producing regions in the United States. Stubby-root nematode species are difficult to identify because the morphological differences between the species are very small (4). Paratrichodorus teres is a morphologically similar spec

Evaluation of factors associated with HIV self-testing Acceptability and Uptake among the MSM community in Nairobi, Kenya: A cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Human Immunodeficiency Virus self-test (HIVST) refers to a process where a person collects his or her own specimen (blood or oral), performs a test and interprets the results. The interpretation of results can either be done in private or through support of a trusted partner. Self-test should be seen as screening and confirmatory tests are typically strongly encouraged. STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine facilitating factors for HIVST acceptability and uptake among men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: A cross-sectional exploratory study design, targeting MSM in Nairobi was used.

Identification of domestic reservoirs and common exposures in an emerging lineage of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 in England: a genomic epidemiological analysis.

BACKGROUND: The zoonotic pathogen Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157:H7 emerged during the 1980s as a causative agent of foodborne outbreaks associated with haemorrhagic colitis and haemolytic uraemic syndrome, which can be fatal. We investigated the emerging lineage IIc that was causing outbreaks of STEC O157:H7, identified and quantified the domestic and non-domestic reservoirs, and quantified patient exposures across the population of England. METHODS: In this genomic epidemiological analysis study, all human STEC O157:H7 lineage IIc (n=925) isolates cultured from faecal sp

[Gingival hyperplasia during treatment with nifedipine].

INTRODUCTION: Nifedipine is a relatively new and increasingly used medication for treatment of all kinds of angina pectoris and arterial hypertension. The principal action of nifedipine is to inhibit the influx of extracellular calcium ions across the membranes of cardiac and vascular smooth muscle cells, without changing serum calcium concentration (1). One of the side effects of this drug is gingival hyperplasia which was first described in 1984 by Lederman (2). He noted that gingival hyperplasia is mostly marked on the labial gingiva of the upper and lower anterior teeth and appeared 1 to 2

Guidelines for preventing the transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in health-care settings, 2005.

In 1994, CDC published the Guidelines for Preventing the Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in HealthCare Facilities, 1994. The guidelines were issued in response to 1) a resurgence of tuberculosis (TB) disease that occurred in the United States in the mid-1980s and early 1990s, 2) the documentation of several high-profile health-care--associated (previously termed "nosocomial") outbreaks related to an increase in the prevalence of TB disease and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection, 3) lapses in infection control practices, 4) delays in the diagnosis and treatment of persons

Precision measurement of disc height, vertebral height and sagittal plane displacement from lateral radiographic views of the lumbar spine.

OBJECTIVE.: To compile a database of disc height, vertebral height and sagittal plane displacement from lateral radiographic views of the lumbar spine, valid for male and female subjects in the age range 16-57 years. The protocols used to measure these parameters compensate for distortion in central projection, off-centre position, axial rotation and lateral tilt of the spine as well as for variation in radiographic magnification and stature. STUDY DESIGN.: The study comprised designing and testing of measurement protocols, together with subsequent data collection from archive radiographs. BAC

Peritonsillar abscess: clinical aspects of microbiology, risk factors, and the association with parapharyngeal abscess.

PTA is a collection of pus located between the tonsillar capsule and the pharyngeal constrictor muscle. It is considered a complication of acute tonsillitis and is the most prevalent deep neck infection (approximately 2000 cases annually in Denmark) and cause of acute admission to Danish ENT departments. Teenagers and young adults are most commonly affected and males may predominate over females. However, no studies of age- and gender-stratified incidence rates have previously been published. Furthermore, smoking may be associated with increased risk of peritonsillar abscess (PTA) development,

Robot-assisted Sistrunk's operation, total thyroidectomy, and neck dissection via a transaxillary and retroauricular (TARA) approach in papillary carcinoma arising in thyroglossal duct cyst and thyroid gland.

BACKGROUND: Carcinomas arising in the thyroglossal duct cysts are rare, accounting only for about 0.7-1.5 % of all thyroglossal duct cysts. Synchronous occurrence of thyroglossal duct carcinoma and thyroid carcinoma is reported to be even rarer. Traditionally, surgical treatments of such coexisting thyroglossal duct cyst carcinoma (TGDCa) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) were typically performed through a single transverse or double incisions on the overlying skin. A longer, extended cervical incision might be required if neck dissection is necessary. Though this method provides the opera

Rethinking Femoral Head Biopsies in Geriatric Hip Fractures: Financial Burden vs Clinical Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral head specimens are often sent for histopathology after geriatric femoral neck fractures in patients with past history of malignancies. However, the cost-effectiveness of this practice is unclear and the clinical impact and effect on patient management has yet to be ascertained. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of all femoral head histopathology specimens registered in our center from 2003 to 2023. Patients <65 years of age were excluded from the study. Patient demographics were analyzed. Clinical notes and radiographic information were retrieved for all cases with

Percutaneous-Reinforced Osteoplasty: A Review of Emerging Treatment Strategies for Bone Interventions.

Percutaneous-reinforced osteoplasty is currently being investigated as a possible therapeutic procedure for fracture stabilization in high-risk patients, primarily in patients with bone metastases or osteoporosis. For these patients, a percutaneous approach, if structurally sound, can provide a viable method for treating bone fractures without the physiologic stress of anesthesia and open surgery. However, the low strength of fixation is a common limitation that requires further refinement in scaffold design and selection of materials, and may potentially benefit from tissue-engineering-based

Exploring versatile applications of a vacuum-assisted bone harvester in orthopedic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Orthopedic procedures often require removing bone or pathological tissue, with traditional methods involving instruments like curettes and rongeurs. However, these methods can be time-consuming and lead to increased blood loss. To mitigate these side effects, vacuum-assisted tools have been developed to aid in tissue removal. These devices enable surgeons to suction tissue without discarding it, potentially improving outcomes in conditions such as osteomyelitis or tumor removal while enabling collection of the material for downstream applications. Despite limited research, vacuum-a
