BACKGROUND: Paediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic condition often associated with severe disruptions of family functioning, impairment of peer relationships and academic performance. Mean age of onset of juvenile OCD is 10.3 years; however, reports on young children with OCD show that the disorder can manifest itself at an earlier age. Both an earlier age of onset and a longer duration of illness have been associated with increased persistence of OCD. There seems to be difficulty for health professionals to recognize and diagnose OCD in young children appropriately, which

BACKGROUND: The evidence base addressing transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for behavioral health conditions other than treatment-resistant depression is not well established. This systematic review evaluated the efficacy and safety of TMS for persons with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO were searched for English language studies published from inception through July 7, 2025. Eligibility criteria included randomized, sham-controlled trials (RCTs) enrolling

BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use has surged globally, particularly among young adults and parents of young children. Though often perceived as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, concerns have grown regarding secondhand exposure, especially for children. Misconceptions about the safety of vaping may influence parental decisions to use e-cigarettes around their children.
OBJECTIVES: To explore parental motivations for e-cigarette use and perceptions of the risks associated with vaping around children, using a mixed-methods approach.

BACKGROUND: Misophonia, characterized by intense emotional reactions to specific sounds, is increasingly studied in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related mental health conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, and depression. Autistic individuals often have sensory sensitivities, which may predispose them to misophonia. However, the relationship between misophonia, sensory sensitivities, and psychiatric comorbidities in autism remains underexplored.
AIMS: This systematic review examines the prevalence, clinical characteristics, comorbidities, and treatment outcomes

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic change in the presentation of patients with tics. The explosive presentation of atypical tics (TT) has been noted worldwide and thought to be the manifestation of a pandemic-associated functional neurologic disorder following social media exposure to tics. Nevertheless, despite the frequent diagnosis of functional tics (FT), there are no existing formal diagnostic criteria. The primary aim of this study was to create a patient-based diagnostic checklist for making the diagnosis of a functional tic di

BACKGROUND: Non-binary gender adolescents are particularly vulnerable and more likely to be exposed to several socio-psychological difficulties and disorders. It is vital to discover and act on the vulnerabilities they encounter. The present study aims to describe the somatic and mental health, affect state, frequency of risk behaviors, victimization and negative psychosocial factors, as well as the personality profiles of non-binary adolescents. In this study the concept of gender non-binary is used and captured respondents who selected "neither of these" as their gender from the possible opt

BACKGROUND: Some individuals who suffer from obsessive-compulsive (OC) disorder (OCD), report disturbing sensory preoccupations. The inability to stop obsessing over stimuli resonates with a difficulty in sensory habituation. Impaired sensory habituation, to a degree that clearly dysregulates response to sensory stimuli, and impairs participation in everyday activities, can be part of a disorder known as sensory over-responsivity (SOR). Although previous studies indicated a correlation between OCD and SOR, physiological experiments show that individuals with OCD are not more sensitive to senso

Illness anxiety disorder (IAD, formerly hypochondriasis) is characterized by preoccupation with fear of serious illness despite medical reassurance. IAD is common, debilitating, challenging to treat, and results in high healthcare utilization. Outpatient management of IAD is challenging because patients can compulsively seek reassurance from numerous providers, which interferes with learning more productive coping skills. We present the case of a woman with severe IAD who presented to the emergency room with increasing frequency over several months, despite regular outpatient medical visits an

Opiate addiction is a chronic medical disorder characterized by drug tolerance and dependence, behavioral sensitization, vulnerability to compulsive relapse, and high mortality. In laboratory animals, the potential effect of opiate drugs to induce cell death by apoptosis is a controversial topic. This postmortem human brain study examined the status of the extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways in the prefrontal cortex of a large group of well-characterized heroin or methadone abusers. In these subjects (n=36), the immunocontent of apoptosis-1 protein (Fas) death receptor did not differ fr

BACKGROUND: Excoriation (skin-picking) disorder (SPD) is a relatively common psychiatric condition whose neurobiological basis is unknown.
AIMS: To probe the function of fronto-striatal circuitry in SPD.
METHOD: Eighteen participants with SPD and 15 matched healthy controls undertook an executive planning task (Tower of London) during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Activation during planning was compared between groups using region of interest and whole-brain permutation cluster approaches.
RESULTS: The SPD group exhibited significant functional underactivation in a cluster e

The present study sought to examine the longitudinal psychoeducational, neurocognitive, and psychiatric outcomes of children and adolescents with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a population with a high incidence of major psychiatric illnesses appearing in late adolescence/early adulthood. Little is known of the developmental changes that occur in the early teen years, prior to the age of highest psychosis risk. Data were collected from 71 participants (42 subjects with 22q11DS and 29 control subjects) at Time 1 (T1) and Time 2 (T2), approximately 3.5 years later. The 22q11DS g

BACKGROUND: Prior research established that psychological factors are associated with the frequency of stimulant (i.e., cocaine, crack, and methamphetamine) use among substance-using men who have sex with men (MSM). The present investigation examined whether and how psychological factors are associated with engagement in any stimulant use in the broader population of MSM.
METHODS: A probability sample of 879 MSM residing in San Francisco was obtained using random digit dialing from May of 2002 through January of 2003. Of these, 711 participants (81%) completed a mail-in questionnaire that ass

INTRODUCTION: Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experience various cognitive impairments, yet typical treatments do not address these deficits. Goal management training (GMT) is a structured cognitive remediation therapy to enhance executive function. GMT serves as a metacognitive strategy training, improving cognitive control and mindfulness related to executive dysfunction. Given OCD patients' challenges with attention flexibility and control, the efficacy of GMT may be enhanced when combined with a preparatory intervention that builds foundational metacognitive knowledge.
