Aerobic exercise training reduces cannabis craving and use in non-treatment seeking cannabis-dependent adults.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis dependence is a significant public health problem. Because there are no approved medications for this condition, treatment must rely on behavioral approaches empirically complemented by such lifestyle change as exercise. AIMS: To examine the effects of moderate aerobic exercise on cannabis craving and use in cannabis dependent adults under normal living conditions. DESIGN: Participants attended 10 supervised 30-min treadmill exercise sessions standardized using heart rate (HR) monitoring (60-70% HR reserve) over 2 weeks. Exercise sessions were conducted by exercise physi

Kiddie-SADS reveals high rates of DSM-IV disorders in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

Prevalence of current comorbid DSM-IV disorders was assessed in a special school population of children and adolescents with ASD (N = 71, age 6.0-17.9 years), representing all cognitive levels and main ASD subgroups. Symptoms were assessed through parent interview and association to child characteristics was explored. Seventy-two percent was diagnosed with at least one comorbid disorder. Anxiety disorders (41%) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (31%) were most prevalent. Obsessive-compulsive disorder was more common in older children, and oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disord

Cluster analysis of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: clinical and genetic correlates.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity of certain obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs; such as Tourette's disorder) in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may serve to define important OCD subtypes characterized by differing phenomenology and neurobiological mechanisms. Comorbidity of the putative OCSDs in OCD has, however, not often been systematically investigated. METHODS: The Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition , Axis I Disorders-Patient Version as well as a Structured Clinical Interview for Putative OCSDs (SCID-OCSD) were ad

Olanzapine in the treatment of aggression and tics in children with Tourette's syndrome--a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of olanzapine on aggressive behaviour and tic severity in children with Tourette's Syndrome (TS). METHOD: Ten (10) subjects (aged 7-13 years) with a primary diagnosis of TS and a history of aggressive behaviour were treated in a single-blind, 2-week placebo run-in, 8-week treatment phase trial. The starting dose of olanzapine was 1.25-2.5 mg/day and was titrated at biweekly intervals, as tolerated. The mean dosage at the end of the trial was 14.5 mg/day. RESULTS: All 10 subjects completed the study. Olanzapine produced clinically an

[Choking phobia in childhood: a differential diagnosis with anorexia nervosa].

INTRODUCTION: Choking phobia has been rarely described in the literature and its prevalence has not yet been determined. Because of its clinical picture (female predominance, avoidance or refusal of certain foodstuffs, secondary weight loss, associated obsessive-compulsive symptoms), it is often misdiagnosed as anorexia nervosa. CASE REPORT: The authors describe the case of an 11-year-old girl, hospitalised for anorexia, who actually had choking phobia. Following a long history of anxiety disorders (including separation anxiety, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder), the choking phobi

Cure and care of neurosis. I. Cure.

Behavioural psychotherapy has long historical roots. Recently it has led to effective treatment for selected neuroses, including phobic, obsessive-compulsive and sexual disorders. Potent therapy has become a tool of experimental psychopathology which advances theory and practice. A pervasive principle is exposure of the patient to those stimuli which evoke his discomfort until this subsides. Level of arousal during exposure does not affect outcome. Theoretical issues are reviewed which decide when exposure will be sensitizing or habituating. Both psychoanalytical and conditioning models of neu

A right orbitofrontal region and OCD symptoms: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and a right orbitofrontal lesion. METHOD: Single case report. RESULTS: A 59-year-old man developed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms after his head injury. Magnetic resonance imaging brain scans showed a small contusion in the right orbitofrontal region, and single-photon emission computed tomography revealed hypoperfusion in blood flow at the same region. CONCLUSION: The OCD symptoms that developed in the present case may be attributable primarily to hypofunction in the lesion localized to the right orb

[Toxoplasma gondii: a potential role in the genesis of psychiatric disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasma gondii is the most common protozoan parasite in developed nations. Up to 43% of the French population may be infected, depending on eating habits and exposure to cats, and almost one third of the world human's population may be infected. Two types of infection have been described: a congenital form and an acquired form. Although the medical profession treats these latent cases as asymptomatic and clinically unimportant, results of animal studies and recent studies of personality profiles, behavior, and psychomotor performance have led to reconsider this assumption. Neurobiological Mechanisms of Action of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in the Treatment of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs)-A Review.

Introduction: Substance use disorders (SUDs) pose a significant public health challenge, with current treatments often exhibiting limited effectiveness and high relapse rates. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that delivers low-intensity direct current via scalp electrodes, has shown promise in various psychiatric and neurological conditions. In SUDs, tDCS may help to modulate key neurocircuits involved in craving, executive control, and reward processing, potentially mitigating compulsive drug use. However, the precise neurobiological mech

[Non-structural abnormalities of CNS function resulting in coincidence of endocrinopathies, epilepsy and psychoneurologic disorders in children and adolescents].

BACKGROUND: In the population of children and adolescents, epilepsy affects approximately 1% of cases, nonepileptic seizures are seen in approximately 3%, and endocrine disorders are several times more common. For this reason, coincidence of endocrine disorders and epilepsy and psychoneurologic disorders is frequent. Much less common are structural abnormalities (tumors, developmental abnormalities), and especially non-structural CNS abnormalities, resulting in coincidence of both disorders. There are no reports available in the literature that would address the problem. AIM OF THE STUDY: 1)

[Etiological factors of generalized anxiety disorder].

Generalized Anxiety disorder (GAD) is a widespread psychiatric syndrome involving significant consequences on people's health. However, recent data show that this disorder has received little attention when compared to other anxiety disorders. A review of the publication on GAD also stated that the majority of research has been conducted on descriptive issues, whereas etiological factors received lower rates of publication. This may be explained by the fact that changes in the conceptualization of GAD slowed down the progression of researches focussing on the identification of factors implicat

Stakeholder Criteria for Trust in Artificial Intelligence-Based Computer Perception Tools in Health Care: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Computer perception (CP) technologies hold significant promise for advancing precision mental health care systems, given their ability to leverage algorithmic analysis of continuous, passive sensing data from wearables and smartphones (eg, behavioral activity, geolocation, vocal features, and ambient environmental data) to infer clinically meaningful behavioral and physiological states. However, successful implementation critically depends on cultivating well-founded stakeholder trust. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate, across adolescents, caregivers, clinicians, and devel

Differential effects of sertraline and cognitive behavioural therapy on behavioural inhibition in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) randomised to sertraline, manualised cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), or combination (sertraline + CBT), underwent cognitive assessment. Cognitive testing was conducted at baseline and at week 16. The stop signal reaction time task (SSRT) was used to evaluate motor impulsivity and attentional flexibility was evaluated using the intra/extra-dimensional set shifting task. Paired-samples t -tests or nonparametric variants were used to compare baseline and posttreatment scores within each treatment group. Forty-five patients were tested at base

Prevalence and comorbidity of eating disorders among a community sample of adolescents: 2-year follow-up.

The previous literature about comorbidity between eating disorders (ED) and other DSM-IV psychiatric disorders in adolescence has employed cross-sectional studies with clinical samples, where the comorbid disorders were diagnosed retrospectively. The present study aims to overcome these limitations by the analysis of comorbidity in a community population during 2-year follow-up. A semi-structured interview was applied to a teenager sample. Firstly, a cross-sectional and non-randomized study on psychiatric morbidity was conducted with 993 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 16 from five school

Early orbitofrontal hyperactivation in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Dysfunctional activity in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is one of the core features in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Neuroimaging studies indicate orbitofrontal hyperactivation during the resting state as well as during symptom provocation, whereas orbitofrontal hypoactivation has been reported during tasks designed to dissociate specific cognitive processes. Combined magnetoencephalic and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies show early involvement of the OFC in stimulus processing in healthy subjects. However, it is unclear whether OFC activation is dys
