Reproduction and Wing Differentiation of Gynoparae Are Regulated by Juvenile Hormone Signaling in Aphis gossypii.

Gynopara is a specific winged type in the life history of Aphis gossypii. As a key reproduction mode between parthenogenesis and sexual reproduction, it lays sexual females in late autumn. However, little is known about gynoparae because of its rare presence in the wild and the lack of its detailed descriptions. In this study, we investigated the morphological characteristics, ovary maturation process, and key signaling pathways during the development of gynoparae of A. gossypii. With the extension of development stage, the gynoparae exhibited gradually enlarged and thickened abdomen, deepened

The interaction of Serratia bacteria and harmonine in harlequin ladybird confers an interspecies competitive edge.

The harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis, is a predatory beetle used globally to control pests such as aphids and scale insects. Originating from East Asia, this species has become highly invasive since its introduction in the late 19th century to Europe and North America, posing a threat to local biodiversity. Intraguild predation is hypothesized to drive the success of this invasive species, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, a feeding assay revealed that while harlequin ladybirds survive feeding on seven-spotted ladybird eggs, the reverse is not true. However, sev

Mantises exchange angular momentum between three rotating body parts to jump precisely to targets.

Flightless animals have evolved diverse mechanisms to control their movements in air, whether falling with gravity or propelling against it. Many insects jump as a primary mode of locomotion and must therefore precisely control the large torques generated during takeoff. For example, to minimize spin (angular momentum of the body) at takeoff, plant-sucking bugs apply large equal and opposite torques from two propulsive legs [1]. Interacting gear wheels have evolved in some to give precise synchronization of these legs [2, 3]. Once airborne, as a result of either jumping or falling, further adj

Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in buildings: relationship between body height and crevice size allowing entry.

Although the introduced lady beetle Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coc-cinellidae) is an important predator of aphids in a variety of crop systems during the growing season, it is often a pest in fall and winter when it enters buildings seeking overwintering sites. One of the primary recommendations for managing this annual influx is to prevent beetle entry by caulking or otherwise filling potential entry points in buildings. The goal of this study was to determine how small a gap the beetles are able to enter in choice and no-choice studies by experimentally exploiting their behavior

First Report of Broad bean wilt virus on Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.).

In the spring and summer of 1998, a severe virus-like disease consisting of chlorotic mottle on leaves, yellowing, and stunting was observed at the Giardino delle Erbe of Casola-Valsenio (Emila-Romagna region, northern Italy). Most of the symptomatic plants were infected with a filamentous virus that was not identified. Moreover, one thyme plant showing yellow leaves was also found infected by an isometric virus, the identity of which was established by the following host reactions and serological assay. It was mechanically transmitted to 33 species belonging to 11 botanical families. All the

A Multi-Scale Vision-Sensor Collaborative Framework for Small-Target Insect Pest Management.

In complex agricultural production environments, small-target pests-characterized by tiny scales, strong background confusion, and close dependence on environmental conditions-pose major challenges to precise monitoring and green pest control. To facilitate the transition from experience-driven to data-driven pest management, a multi-scale vision-sensor collaborative recognition method is proposed for field and protected agriculture scenarios to improve the accuracy and stability of small-target pest recognition under complex conditions. The method jointly models multi-scale visual representat

Disruption of a horizontally transferred phytoene desaturase abolishes carotenoid accumulation and diapause in Tetranychus urticae.

Carotenoids underlie many of the vibrant yellow, orange, and red colors in animals, and are involved in processes ranging from vision to protection from stresses. Most animals acquire carotenoids from their diets because de novo synthesis of carotenoids is primarily limited to plants and some bacteria and fungi. Recently, sequencing projects in aphids and adelgids, spider mites, and gall midges identified genes with homology to fungal sequences encoding de novo carotenoid biosynthetic proteins like phytoene desaturase. The finding of horizontal gene transfers of carotenoid biosynthetic genes t

Characterization of EPG waveforms for the tea green leafhopper, Empoasca vitis Göthe (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), on tea plants and their correlation with stylet activities.

The stylet probing activities of the tea green leafhopper Empoasca vitis Gothe (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) were studied using the DC electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique. Seven different EPG waveforms (i.e., Np, E1, E2, E3, E4, E5 and E6) were distinguished and characterized on susceptible tea leaves. In addition, four of them (i.e., Np, E1, E2, E3), together accounting for 97.08% of the total recording time, were behaviorally correlated with probing and non-probing activities using artificial diet observation with high-magnification video recording. At the start of stylet probing, wavef

Independent responses to ultraviolet radiation and herbivore attack in broccoli.

The plant responses to ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) and to insect herbivory are believed to be partially similar. In this study, responses to these factors were investigated in the crop species broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. convar. botrytis, Brassicaceae). Plants were first grown under three UV-B regimes (80%, 23%, and 4% transmittance of ambient UV-B) in greenhouses covered with either innovative materials (high and medium transmittance) or conventional glass (low transmittance). Half of the plants then remained under these conditions, but the other half were transferred to the field with

Expression of a delta 9 14:0-acyl carrier protein fatty acid desaturase gene is necessary for the production of omega 5 anacardic acids found in pest-resistant geranium (Pelargonium xhortorum).

Anacardic acids, a class of secondary compounds derived from fatty acids, are found in a variety of dicotyledonous families. Pest resistance (e.g., spider mites and aphids) in Pelargonium xhortorum (geranium) is associated with high levels (approximately 81%) of unsaturated 22:1 omega 5 and 24:1 omega 5 anacardic acids in the glandular trichome exudate. A single dominant locus controls the production of these omega 5 anacardic acids, which arise from novel 16:1 delta 11 and 18:1 delta 13 fatty acids. We describe the isolation and characterization of a cDNA encoding a unique delta 9 14:0-acyl c

Genetic variation in NIN1 and C/VIF1 genes is significantly associated with Populus angustifolia resistance to a galling herbivore, Pemphigus betae.

The identification of genes associated with ecologically important traits provides information on the potential genetic mechanisms underlying the responses of an organism to its natural environment. In this study, we investigated the genetic basis of host plant resistance to the gall-inducing aphid, Pemphigus betae, in a natural population of 154 narrowleaf cottonwoods (Populus angustifolia). We surveyed genetic variation in two genes putatively involved in sink-source relations and a phenology gene that co-located in a previously identified quantitative trait locus for resistance to galling.

Maize terpene synthase 1 impacts insect behavior via the production of monoterpene volatiles β-myrcene and linalool.

Plant-derived volatiles are important mediators of plant-insect interactions as they can provide cues for host location and quality, or act as direct or indirect defense molecules. The volatiles produced by Zea mays (maize) include a range of terpenes, likely produced by several of the terpene synthases (TPS) present in maize. Determining the roles of specific terpene volatiles and individual TPSs in maize-insect interactions is challenging due to the promiscuous nature of TPSs in vitro and their potential for functional redundancy. In this study, we used metabolite GWAS of a sweetcorn diversi

Isolation and characterization of an entomopathogenic Serratia strain against rice delphacid planthoppers.

BACKGROUND: Delphacid planthoppers (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), including the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens), pose a significant threat to global rice production, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable and effective biological control agents. Here, we isolated a virulent strain of Serratia nematodiphila named BPH1 from diseased N. lugens and characterized its insecticidal activity, genomic features, and virulence-associated phenotypes. RESULTS: S. nematodiphila BPH1 exhibited median lethal concentrations (LC50) of 5.5 × 104 and 2.4 × 108 CFU/mL for N. lugens adults and nymphs, resp

Quercetin-loaded bioinspired soy protein isolate-zein delivery system enabling pest management and plant growth promotion in sustainable agriculture.

Strategies that reduce dependence on synthetic pesticides while maintaining crop productivity are increasingly emphasized in sustainable agriculture. Here, we developed a bioinspired plant protein-based delivery system consisting of quercetin-loaded soy protein isolate (SPI)-zein nanocapsules. Spray drying was employed as a structural engineering strategy to assemble and immobilize nanocapsules into pomegranate-like hierarchical particulate aggregates. SEM, fluorescence spectroscopy, FTIR, UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD and TGA were adopted to characterise quercetin-loaded SPI-zein systems prepared

Purification and serological detection of maize yellow mosaic virus.

Maize yellow mosaic virus (MaYMV) is an emerging polerovirus that was first reported in maize in China in 2013 but has since been reported in Africa and the Americas. Due to its novelty, no antibodies or serological diagnostics for the virus existed prior to the current study. In this study, we developed the first purification method for maize yellow mosaic virus with the goal of generating an antibody and subsequently developing diagnostic tests. Yields of 0.634-1.275 milligrams of virus per kilogram of maize tissue were obtained, which is comparable to the yields obtained for other grass-inf

Covalent organic frameworks hybridized polymeric high internal phase emulsions with amphiphilicity for extraction of trace bisamide insecticides in food samples.

Polymeric high internal phase emulsions decorated with covalent organic frameworks (polyHIPEs-COFs) were synthesized and used as the sorbent for cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole. Pickering high internal phase emulsions stabilized by covalent organic frameworks solid particles and liquid surfactants (Span80 and polyvinylpyrrolidone) endow the composites with open-cell structures and superwettability. The amphiphilicity and open-cell structures enable rapid adsorption and desorption for cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole, and the solid-phase extraction process can be completed in 5

Mechanisms of competitive displacement of native ant fauna by invading Myrmica rubra (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) populations.

Exotic ants have become invasive in many regions around the world, with variable ecological impacts. Postinvasion, native ant communities are often found to be depauperate, though the causes of this apparent lack of coexistence are rarely well known. Myrmica rubra (L.), a Palearctic Myrmecine ant, is currently expanding its range as an invasive in North America. This aggressive ant forms dense, patchy local infestations and appears to aggressively displace native ant fauna. We measured behavioral interactions and rates of recruitment in experimental field assays pitting native foragers against

Changes in clonal poplar leaf chemistry caused by stem galls alter herbivory and leaf litter decomposition.

Gall-inducing insects are highly specialized herbivores that modify the phenotype of their host plants. Beyond the direct manipulation of plant morphology and physiology in the immediate environment of the gall, there is also evidence of plant-mediated effects of gall-inducing insects on other species of the assemblages and ecosystem processes associated with the host plant. We analysed the impact of gall infestation by the aphid Pemphigus spirothecae on chemical leaf traits of clonal Lombardy poplars (Populus nigra var. italica) and the subsequent effects on intensity of herbivory and decompo
