We report on the appearance of parathyroid, thyroid, and cervical thymic cysts on computed tomography (CT) scans. The differential diagnostic considerations include thyroglossal and branchial cleft cysts, cystic hygromas, primary and metastatic tumors, dermoids, teratomas, choristomas, tracheoesophageal and cervical bronchogenic cysts, as well as cystic neuromas, abscesses, and lipomas. Most cannot be differentiated using CT alone and require clinical observations, laboratory testing, and surgical and histologic findings for definitive diagnosis. Our experience with these rare lesions is repor

First branchial cleft anomalies are rare and their various anatomical relationships to the facial nerve have been described. We encountered a 15-year-old female with a type II first branchial cleft cyst presenting as a right neck mass that we found during surgical excision to transverse two main facial nerve trunks. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a first branchial cleft anomaly in conjunction with a duplicated facial nerve trunk.

BACKGROUND: Branchial cleft anomalies are the second most common head and neck congenital lesions seen in children. Amongst the branchial cleft malformations, second cleft lesions account for 95% of the branchial anomalies. This article analyzes all the cases of branchial cleft anomalies operated on at Great Ormond Street Hospital over the past 10 years.
METHODS: All children who underwent surgery for branchial cleft sinus or fistula from January 2000 to December 2010 were included in this study.
RESULTS: In this series, we had 80 patients (38 female and 42 male). The age at the time of oper

The recent advent of endoscopic procedures has compelled both plastic and neck and head surgeons to reconsider the conventional methods by which the excision of cervical congenital cystic is classically achieved. An endoscopic approach for excision of the cervical congenital cystic is described. This procedure is anatomically safe and can be made with minimal morbidity through a small transcervical incision. Both specific instruments and solid anatomical knowledge are necessary to perform a safe and efficient cystic endoscopic excision. The essential surgical steps are as follows: 1. Minimal in

BACKGROUND: Branchial cleft cysts occur because of a failure of involution of the second branchial cleft. However, as well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma can mimic branchial cleft cysts, there is a lack of consensus on the appropriate management of cystic neck lumps.
OBJECTIVE: To report our experience of fine needle aspiration cytology and frozen section examination in the management of cystic neck lumps.
METHOD: Retrospective case note review of patients managed in the Southern General Hospital, Scotland, UK.
RESULTS: The sensitivity of fine needle aspiration cytology and frozen s

AIM: Solitary cystic masses of the lateral neck in an adult patient can pose a diagnostic dilemma. Malignancy must be ruled out since metastases arising from H&N cancers may mimic the presentation of benign cystic masses. Only a small number of studies have investigated the diagnostic management and malignancy rate of clinically benign solitary cervical cystic lesions. There are no established guidelines for the diagnostic evaluation.
METHODS: Retrospective review of the clinical, cytological, radiological, and pathological records of all adult patients (> 18 years) operated on for second bra

An audible bruit may represent a clue to the vascular nature of the lesion. Angiography is definitely indicated in the presence of pulsatile cervical masses with or without an associated bruit, and should be more widely utilized in the future for evaluation of cervical masses. In addition to the nature of the mass, angiography may also be of value in outlining the extent of the mass and its relationship to major vessels. Magnification and subtraction angiographic techniques with their improved detail may play an important role in clarifying the etiology of cervical masses, and hence facilitate

8 patients with cystic carcinoma resembling a lateral cervical cyst by morphology and topography are reported. In 4 cases an analogous carcinoma later appeared in the ipsilateral tonsil, and in 2 tonsillectomized patients subsequent carcinoma developed in the palatopharyngeal arch or at the base of the tongue respectively. One carcinomatous cyst with consecutive involvement of the base of the tongue was preceded by a regular branchiogenic cyst on the opposite side. Removal of a recurrent branchiogenic cyst in another patient revealed unsuspected chronic myeloic leukaemia infiltrating adjacent

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common complication in surgery. In head and neck surgeries, different rates are reported in the indexed literature. Nowadays, this indiscriminate use of antibiotics is associated with increased cost and risks for patients. Antimicrobial misuse has also contributed to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 204 patients were included in this observational retrospective cohort study. The primary outcome of this study was to describe the rate of SSI. Wound infection was considered as SSI and was defined a

The purpose of this report is to examine the computed tomography scans, magnetic resonance images, and pathologic findings in 44 patients, 42 of whom had inclusion-type cysts of the parotid and parapharyngeal space of varying etiologies. Two additional cases of cystic changes in the benign lymphoepithelial lesion (BLEL) of Sjögren's syndrome are highlighted here, since they had unusually large cystic components mimicking acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related parotid cysts (ARPCs). A retrospective examination identified 18 ARPCs, 3 lymphoepithelial cysts (LECs), 13 cystic Warthin's tumors,

Relations between first branchial cleft anomalies and the facial nerve vary. We reviewed 41 patients' medical records and pathological sections to clarify the relation, and found that those on the right side in young patients, which were Work type II and situated low down, were likely to be deep to the facial nerve.

BACKGROUND: Fistulas, sinus or cysts which trace back to anomalies of the first branchial cleft are seldom compared to lateral neck cysts and fistulas. For their accurate diagnosis and safe treatment special embryological and anatomical knowledge is necessary.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Embryology, anatomy, diagnosis and therapy are described and explained by 2 case studies in context to the current literature.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Sonography and contrast-enhanced radiological methods represent the fundamental pillar of the diagnosis. Therapeutically, the complete extirpation is the first choi

OBJECTIVES: OK-432 has been widely used to treat lymphangioma and ranula; however, there are few studies for its use in treatment of branchial cleft cyst (BCC). We conducted this study to evaluate the effectiveness of sclerotherapy using OK-432 in treatment of BCC.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Case series with planned data collection.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: From 2004 to 2007, we treated 23 patients with BCC using OK-432 sclerotherapy. Of these 23 patients, 18 had unilocular cysts and five had multilocular cysts. The sizes of the BCCs were measured and compared before and after treatment.

Neck masses can be classified into three main categories: congenital, inflammatory and neoplastic. Our aim was to determine the distribution of diagnosis in patients who were followed-up for a neck mass and had undergone surgery for diagnostic indications. Six hundred and thirty cases referred to the Otorhinolaryngology and Head Neck Surgery Department of Haseki Research and Training Hospital between January 2005 and February 2012 with a neck mass who underwent excisional or incisional biopsy to establish a histopathologic diagnosis were retrospectively evaluated. Patients with a diagnosis of
