Biocontrol of anthracnose in pepper using chitinase, beta-1,3 glucanase, and 2-furancarboxaldehyde produced by Streptomyces cavourensis SY224.

A strain of Streptomyces cavourensis subsp. cavourensis (coded as SY224) antagonistic to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides infecting pepper plants was isolated. SY224 produced lytic enzymes such as chitinase, beta-1,3-glucanase, lipase, and protease in respective assays. To examine for antifungal activity, the treatments amended with the nonsterilized supernatant resulted in the highest growth inhibition rate of about 92.9% and 87.4% at concentrations of 30% and 10%, respectively. However, the sterilized treatments (autoclaved or chloroform treated) gave a lowered but significant in

Capsaicin inhibits growth of adult T-cell leukemia cells.

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-associated adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) is resistant to conventional chemotherapy. We examined the in vitro effects of capsaicin, the principal ingredients of red pepper, on three ATL cell lines. Capsaicin treatment inhibited the growth of ATL cells both in dose- and time-dependent manner. The inhibitory effect was mainly due to the induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Capsaicin treatment also induced the degradation of Tax and up-regulation of I kappa-B alpha, resulting in the decrease of nuclear factor (NF)-kappa B/p65 DNA binding activity.

Development of a composite resin disclosing agent based on the understanding of tooth staining mechanisms.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the surface composition of dental enamel and composite resin, assess the ability of dyes with different affinities to stain these surfaces, and use this information to develop a disclosing agent that stains composite resin more than dental enamel. METHODS: One hundred and ten sound extracted teeth were collected and 60 discs of composite resin, 9 mm diameter and 3 mm thick, were prepared. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to determine the elemental composition on the different surfaces. A tooth shade spectrophotometer was used to assess the change

Beneficial effects of capsiate on ethanol-induced mucosal injury in rats are related to stimulation of calcitonin gene-related Peptide release.

Capsiate is a non-pungent analogue of capsaicin from CH-19 Sweet peppers. Capsaicin is reported to trigger calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) release through activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid subfamily member 1 (TRPV1) and produces beneficial effects on gastric mucosa. This study aimed to investigate whether capsiate is able to produce beneficial effects on gastric mucosa and whether the protective effects of capsipate occur through a mechanism involving the activation of TRPV1 and CGRP release. A rat model of gastric mucosal injury was established by the oral administra

Potentially toxic element contamination in Ghana's vegetable value chain: a systematic review of mining-related soil-to-food transfer and human health risk.

In Ghana, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and smallholder vegetable farming occupy the same landscapes, and in many communities the same households combine both livelihoods, yet no systematic account has previously quantified how much potentially toxic element (PTE) contamination travels from mine waste into food. This review addresses that gap for the pre-harvest and post-harvest stages of the value chain for the four vegetables that define Ghanaian diets: tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), pepper (Capsicum annuum), garden egg (Solanum aethiopicum), and onion (Allium cepa). Adhering to PRI

Immunoblot and radioallergosorbent test inhibition studies of allergenic cross-reactivity of the predatory mite Amblyseius cucumeris with the house dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus.

BACKGROUND: In 1999, an extensive study among bell pepper growers showed that a predatory mite, Amblyseius cucumeris, is a potentially relevant source of occupational allergens because 23% of the population had positive skin prick test reactions. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether cross-reactivity between A. cucumeris and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is responsible for the cosensitization to both mite species found in 58.7% of A. cucumeris-sensitized greenhouse workers. METHODS: Fifteen serum samples from greenhouse workers with work-related inhalant allergy and a positive radioallergosorbe

RNA-seq pinpoints a Xanthomonas TAL-effector activated resistance gene in a large-crop genome.

Transcription activator-like effector (TALE) proteins of the plant pathogenic bacterial genus Xanthomonas bind to and transcriptionally activate host susceptibility genes, promoting disease. Plant immune systems have taken advantage of this mechanism by evolving TALE binding sites upstream of resistance (R) genes. For example, the pepper Bs3 and rice Xa27 genes are hypersensitive reaction plant R genes that are transcriptionally activated by corresponding TALEs. Both R genes have a hallmark expression pattern in which their transcripts are detectable only in the presence and not the absence of

Identification and deletion analysis of the promoter of the pepper SAR8.2 gene activated by bacterial infection and abiotic stresses.

The pepper SAR8.2 gene, CASAR82A, was locally and systemically induced in pepper plants which had been infected by Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria or by Pseudomonas fluorescens. The DNA 1,283 bp sequence upstream of the CASAR82A gene was assessed with regard to the activity of the CASAR82A promoter fused to the beta-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene, via an Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression assay. In tobacco leaves which transiently expressed the -831 bp CASAR82A promoter, GUS activity was locally and systemically induced by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci. GUS activity, which

Physalis angulata: A New Natural Host of Tomato chlorosis virus in Brazil.

Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) and Tomato infectious chlorosis virus (TICV) are the two Solanaceae-infecting Crinivirus species (family Closteroviridae) of worldwide importance. In Brazil, only ToCV has been detected under natural conditions infecting tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum), and potato (S. tuberosum), causing foliar chlorosis (1, 3). However, there are no formal reports of alternative weed hosts of ToCV. During crop surveys in Capão Bonito, São Paulo State, Brazil (May 2011), a high incidence (above 20%) of plants of the weed, cut leaf ground cherry (Physa

CaWRKY40, a WRKY protein of pepper, plays an important role in the regulation of tolerance to heat stress and resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum infection.

WRKY proteins form a large family of plant transcription factors implicated in the modulation of numerous biological processes, such as growth, development and responses to various environmental stresses. However, the roles of the majority WRKY family members, especially in non-model plants, remain poorly understood. We identified CaWRKY40 from pepper. Transient expression in onion epidermal cells showed that CaWRKY40 can be targeted to nuclei and activates expression of a W-box-containing reporter gene. CaWRKY40 transcripts are induced in pepper by Ralstonia solanacearum and heat shock. To as

Substance P stimulates human airway submucosal gland secretion mainly via a CFTR-dependent process.

Chronic bacterial airway infections are the major cause of mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF). Normal airway defenses include reflex stimulation of submucosal gland mucus secretion by sensory neurons that release substance P (SubP). CFTR is an anion channel involved in fluid secretion and mutated in CF; the role of CFTR in secretions stimulated by SubP is unknown. We used optical methods to measure SubP-mediated secretion from human submucosal glands in lung transplant tissue. Glands from control but not CF subjects responded to mucosal chili oil. Similarly, serosal SubP stimulated secretion in

First Report of Tomato torrado virus in Tomato Crops in France.

In June 2008, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants cv. Fer De Lance (De Ruiter Seeds, Bergschenhoek, the Netherlands) grown in greenhouses near Perpignan (southern France) showed growth reduction and necrotic lesions on fruits, stems, and basal parts of the leaves. Tomato torrado virus (ToTV) was suspected on the basis of symptoms and its recent description in Spain (4). Primer set A (3), designed to ToTV RNA-2, was used for reverse transcription (RT)-PCR experiments on RNA extracted from four infected plants and allowed the amplification of a 493-bp fragment. No amplification was observed

Topical application of capsaicin reduces visceral adipose fat by affecting adipokine levels in high-fat diet-induced obese mice.

OBJECTIVE: Visceral obesity contributes to the development of obesity-related disorders such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and fatty liver disease, as well as cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we determined whether topical application of capsaicin can reduce fat accumulation in visceral adipose tissues. METHODS AND RESULTS: We first observed that topical application of 0.075% capsaicin to male mice fed a high-fat diet significantly reduced weight gain and visceral fat. Fat cells were markedly smaller in the mesenteric and epididymal adipose tissues of mice treated with capsaicin cream. T

Involvement of Bax, Bcl-2, Ca2+ and caspase-3 in capsaicin-induced apoptosis of human leukemia HL-60 cells.

The role of Ca2+ on the effects of capsaicin on human leukemia HL-60 cells in vitro and the molecular mechanisms of capsaicin-induced apoptosis were investigated. The flow cytometric analysis indicated that capsaicin decreased the percentage of viable HL-60 cells, via the induction of G0/G1-phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Capsaicin-induced G0/G1-phase arrest involved the suppression of CDK2 and the cyclin E complex, which are check-point enzymes for cells moving from G0/G1- to S-phase. Capsaicin-induced apoptosis was associated with the elevation of intracellular reactive oxygen species

A novel TMV-induced hot pepper cell wall protein gene (CaTin2) is associated with virus-specific hypersensitive response pathway.

Incompatible plant-pathogen interactions result in the rapid cell death response known as hypersensitive response (HR) and activation of host defense related genes. To understand the cellular mechanism controlling defense response better, a novel pathogenesis-related (PR) gene and putative cell wall protein gene, CaTin2, was isolated through differential screening of a hot pepper cDNA library and characterized. CaTin2 gene was locally and systemically induced in hot pepper plants upon TMV-P0 inoculation which induces HR. However, CaTin2 gene wasn't regulated by bacterial HR-specific signal pat
