Anatomical effects of ablation of the anterior retina in small animal eyes.

BACKGROUND: To provide anatomical data after cryo and laser ablation of the anterior retina in mice, rats, and rabbits as a prerequisite to make surgical procedures in these species safer. METHODS: 12 eyes per species of C57BL/6J wild-type (wt) mice, Brown Norway rats, and Chinchilla Bastard rabbits, respectively, were treated with laser or cryo coagulation in the anterior retina. Diode laser and cryo coagulation were applied transsclerally. The coagulation effect was evaluated histologically after three weeks and a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction was performed from serial microscopic se

Serological survey for antibodies to Encephalitozoon cuniculi and Toxoplasma gondii in pet rabbits in eastern coastal areas of China.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi (E. cuniculi) is a microsporidian parasite commonly detected in rabbits and can infect humans and cause encephalitozoonosis. And Toxoplasma gondii is a prevalent parasite distributed worldwide and can infect almost all warm-blooded animals, including humans. The aim of the current study was to investigate the seroprevalence of E. cuniculi and Toxoplasma gondii, and risk factors of infection in pet rabbits reared in eastern coastal areas of China (Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Fujian). Total 222 blood samples of pet rabbits were collected from local

Increased biofilm formation by nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae isolates from patients with invasive disease or otitis media versus strains recovered from cases of respiratory infections.

Biofilm formation by nontypeable (NT) Haemophilus influenzae remains a controversial topic. Nevertheless, biofilm-like structures have been observed in the middle-ear mucosa of experimental chinchilla models of otitis media (OM). To date, there have been no studies of biofilm formation in large collections of clinical isolates. This study aimed to investigate the initial adhesion to a solid surface and biofilm formation by NT H. influenzae by comparing isolates from healthy carriers, those with noninvasive respiratory disease, and those with invasive respiratory disease. We used 352 isolates f

Suture-free and mesh reinforced small intestinal anstomoses: a feasibility study in rabbits.

INTRODUCTION: Anastomotic leakage still remains a major complication in general surgery. Beside general risk factors, the ideal method of anastomotic technique has not been found until now. The aim of the present study was to analyze wound healing in suture-free small intestine anastomoses using fibrin glue with and without mesh-reinforcement. METHODS: Laparotomy and four different types of small bowel anastomoses were performed in 32 chinchilla rabbits. Standard hand-sewn anastomoses (CG), suture-free glued anastomoses (FG) with and without mesh reinforcement using two different types of mes

The influence of inguinal mesh repair on the spermatic cord: a pilot study in the rabbit.

The permanent implantation of a polypropylene mesh during inguinal hernia repair causes chronic inflammatory changes in the surrounding tissue. We investigated the effect of this foreign body reaction on the structures of the spermatic cord in the rabbit. Eight Chinchilla rabbits underwent unilateral inguinal hernia repair by the Lichtenstein technique using Marlex (n = 4) or Ultrapro (n = 4) mesh. The contralateral side was operated upon using the Shouldice repair. Three animals served as controls. Three months after operation we analyzed testicular size, testicular temperature, and arterial

Prevention of impulse noise-induced hearing loss with antioxidants.

CONCLUSION: These findings indicate a strong protective effect of ALCAR and NAC on impulse noise-induced cochlear damage, and suggest the feasibility of using clinically available antioxidant compounds to protect the ear from acute acoustic injury. OBJECTIVE: Reactive oxygen species have been shown to play a significant role in noise-induced hearing loss. In the current study, the protective effects of two antioxidants, acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) and N-L-acetylcysteine (NAC), were investigated in a chinchilla model of hearing loss resulting from impulse noise. It was hypothesized that pre- an

Protective effect of corticosteroid against the cytotoxicity of aminoglycoside otic drops on isolated cochlear outer hair cells.

OBJECTIVES: Otic drops are commonly used not only for otitis externa but also for otorrhea in the presence of tympanic membrane perforation or tympanostomy tube. Many studies demonstrated the ototoxicity of aminoglycoside. In our previous study, we observed that gentamicin (GM), when activated with liver extract, demonstrated significant cytotoxicity. The purpose of this study was to assess the protective effect of corticosteroid against the cytotoxicity of GM and tobramycin drops using isolated cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs) in vitro with liver extract. METHODS: OHCs from adult chinchilla

Hypocholesterolemic and antiatherogenic effect of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) in rabbits.

The addition of 10% dried fruiting bodies of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) to the diet containing 1% of cholesterol reduced serum cholesterol levels by 65% and cholesterol content in liver, heart, long extensor muscle and aorta of male rabbits (Chinchilla) by 60, 47, 25 and 80%, respectively. The decrease in total serum cholesterol was affected primarily (by 70%) by reduced cholesterol content in very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) while the contribution of high density lipoproteins (HDL) cholesterol increased by a factor of 3. Oyster mushroom diet reduced by 60-70% the content of con

Changes of the corneal endothelium after ultraviolet-B exposure in previously photokeratectomized eyes.

The photorefractive effect of excimer lasers is based on an interaction between the 193-nm ultraviolet-C laser beam and the stromal chromophore molecules. Recently, in some patients an increase of subepithelial haze and a regression of refractive effect has been observed following suntanning (UV-B exposure). The aim of the study was to find out the possible endothelial damage caused by photoablation with increasing depth and the effect of subsequent UV-B exposure on previously photokeratactomized eyes. Altogether 12 chinchilla rabbits were treated. Four animals received a -5.0 D PRK; four anim

D-methionine immediate and continued rescue after noise exposure does not prevent temporary threshold shift but alters cochlear and serum antioxidant levels.

OBJECTIVE: Determine if D-methionine (D-met) rescue prevents temporary threshold shift (TTS) from steady-state or impulse noise and determine D-met's impact on serum and cochlear antioxidant levels. DESIGN: D-met at 50, 100 or 200 mg/kg/doses were administered 0, 6 and 18 hours-post noise. ABRs at baseline and 24 hours post-noise measured TTS. Serum (SOD, CAT, GR, GPx) and cochlear (GSH, GSSG) antioxidant levels measured physiological influence. Three control groups, with impulse or steady-state or without noise, were saline-injected. STUDY SAMPLE: Ten Chinchillas/group. RESULTS: D-met resc

Recent advancements and new perspectives in animal models for Neurocysticercosis immunopathogenesis.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), one of the most common parasitic diseases of the central nervous system, is caused by Taenia solium. This parasite involves two hosts, intermediate hosts (pig and human) and a definitive host (human) and has various stages in its complex life cycle (eggs, oncosphere, cysticerci and adult tapeworm). Hence, developing an animal model for T. solium that mimics its natural course of infection is quite challenging. We have reviewed here the animal models frequently used to study immunopathogenesis of cysticercosis and also discussed their usefulness for NCC studies. We fou

Elephant brain. Part I: gross morphology, functions, comparative anatomy, and evolution.

We report morphological data on brains of four African, Loxodonta africana, and three Asian elephants, Elephas maximus, and compare findings to literature. Brains exhibit a gyral pattern more complex and with more numerous gyri than in primates, humans included, and in carnivores, but less complex than in cetaceans. Cerebral frontal, parietal, temporal, limbic, and insular lobes are well developed, whereas the occipital lobe is relatively small. The insula is not as opercularized as in man. The temporal lobe is disproportionately large and expands laterally. Humans and elephants have three par

Analyses of Mössbauer mechanical measurements indicate that the cochlea is mechanically active.

Using the results of Mössbauer measurements, mechanical activity in the cochlea was tested for by comparing the measured basilar membrane (BM) transverse velocity amplitude with that calculated for a lossless mechanically passive system, derived from the measured BM velocity phase. If the cochlea is considered to be a lossless mechanically passive system, then the transverse velocity amplitude can be calculated from the group velocity and the relative variation of stiffness along the BM. The group velocity can be derived from the Mössbauer phase measurements, and the relative variation of stif

Permeability of the round window membrane to middle-sized molecules in purulent otitis media.

The effect of pneumococcal otitis media on the permeability of the round window membrane was evaluated using tetraethylammonium ions as a tracer. Round window membrane permeability is reduced significantly at resolved stages of purulent otitis media. In contrast, measurements of round window membrane permeability indicate that acute purulent otitis media has a tendency to facilitate such permeability. Moreover, histologic observations of the round window membrane following bacterial inoculation further support the evidence of functional changes in round window membrane permeability. These find

Stereocilia of sensory cells in normal and hearing impaired ears. A morphological, physiological and behavioural study.

The aim of the present study was to investigate specific structural alterations in the cochlea of ears with sensory neural hearing loss and to determine the relation between structural damage and loss of auditory function. The results show that with the methods used in this study it is possible to obtain well preserved structures with consistent morphological characteristics. Examination and identification of small pathological alterations were thus possible. The stereocilia of the IHCs were found by scanning electron microscopy to be the structure most susceptible to damage by noise in the ra

Panel discussion: pathogenesis of otitis media. Pathology and microbiology of otitis media.

Otitis media (OM) can be subdivided into purulent, serous, mucoid, and chronic forms. It may occur in the absence of tympanic membrane changes and involve the inner ear. Purulent otitis media is characterized early by edema, hyperemia, and polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration in the subepithelial space (SES) and later by mucosal metaplasia, granulation tissue, and osteitis. S. pneumoniae and H. influenza are most commonly identified. Serous and mucoid OM frequently develop from eustachian tube dysfunction. Serous transudate from vessels in the SES passes to the middle ear (serous otitis me

Cardiorespiratory parameters and respiratory reflexes in rabbits during hyperthermia.

The effects of different body temperature (BT) on the respiratory and cardiovascular parameters and respiratory reflexes were studied in 33 anaesthetized adult rabbits. Hyperthermia elicited panting with mean panting respiratory rate 199 +/- 14 x min-1 in all anaesthetized rabbits. Significant correlations between BT and frequency of breathing (positive), heart rate (positive) or tidal volume (negative) were found. Cooling was accompanied by considerable arterial hypotension. Duration of the Hering-Breuer reflex (HB) was reduced by the rise of BT. Intensity of the reflex (assessed as the ratio

Prediction of serous versus purulent otitis media by otoscopy and tympanometry in an animal model.

Non-invasive methods for distinguishing different types of otitis media would have clinical value in predicting otologic morbidity. Two such methods, otoscopy and tympanometry, were used in two experimental models of otitis media to determine whether there are unique otoscopic and tympanometric characteristics of serous and purulent otitis media. A flat (type B or B+) tympanogram and yellow tympanic membrane each had a high likelihood of predicting middle ear effusion in these models, and the best prediction was obtained using both parameters simultaneously. A yellow tympanic membrane color pr

[Effect of chronic stimulation of the negative and positive emotionogenic centers of the hypothalamus on development of cardiac arrhythmias].

Chronic experiments were conducted on 46 rabbits; a study was made of the changes in cardiac activity arising in prolonged (up to 1--2 weeks) electric stimulation of the ventro-median nuclei of the hypothalamus. Disturbances of the cardiac rhythm in the form of tachycardia, atrial flutter and fibrillation, ventricular extrasystole and paroxysmal ventricular tachysystole occurred mostly during the first days of stimulation and ceased after inderal infusion. Functional "weakness" of the cardiac pacemakers was revealed in the animals subjected to 1--2-week stimulation of the ventromedian nuclei.
