Integrated epidemiology and multi-assay evidence of anthelmintic resistance in ovine gastrointestinal nematodes of Northern India.

Gastrointestinal parasitic (GIP) infections are a major constraint to sustainable small ruminant production worldwide due to increasing anthelmintic resistance caused by extensive reliance on chemical anthelmintics. In this study, a total of 2308 faecal samples were collected and examined from naturally infected sheep across northern India, encompassing 15 districts of Punjab and 07 of Himachal Pradesh. An overall prevalence of 96.4% for GIP infections was recorded with strongyles being predominant followed by coccidia. Quantitative faecal examination revealed 62.6% light, 10.2% moderate and 2

BURMESE ROOFED TURTLE (BATAGUR TRIVITTATA) DISEASE SCREENING IN MYANMAR.

The Burmese roofed turtle (Batagur trivittata), a critically endangered freshwater turtle, is endemic to Myanmar. Once thought to be extinct, remnant wild populations were discovered in 2001 and limited captive individuals identified in pagoda ponds or confiscated from fishers in Myanmar. These and their offspring are maintained in five facilities in Myanmar and form the basis of a conservation program (habitat protection, captive breeding, nest protection, egg collection, head-starting, and release). Prerelease health screenings were performed in 2014 and 2018 at Yadanabon Zoological Gardens,

Comparative microarray analysis of intestinal lymphocytes following Eimeria acervulina, E. maxima, or E. tenella infection in the chicken.

Relative expression levels of immune- and non-immune-related mRNAs in chicken intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes experimentally infected with Eimeria acervulina, E. maxima, or E. tenella were measured using a 10K cDNA microarray. Based on a cutoff of >2.0-fold differential expression compared with uninfected controls, relatively equal numbers of transcripts were altered by the three Eimeria infections at 1, 2, and 3 days post-primary infection. By contrast, E. tenella elicited the greatest number of altered transcripts at 4, 5, and 6 days post-primary infection, and at all time points foll

Antiprotozoal and Antitumor Activity of Natural Polycyclic Endoperoxides: Origin, Structures and Biological Activity.

Polycyclic endoperoxides are rare natural metabolites found and isolated in plants, fungi, and marine invertebrates. The purpose of this review is a comparative analysis of the pharmacological potential of these natural products. According to PASS (Prediction of Activity Spectra for Substances) estimates, they are more likely to exhibit antiprotozoal and antitumor properties. Some of them are now widely used in clinical medicine. All polycyclic endoperoxides presented in this article demonstrate antiprotozoal activity and can be divided into three groups. The third group includes endoperoxides

Effects of heat stress on the formation of splenic germinal centres and immunoglobulins in broilers infected by Clostridium perfringens type A.

Avian necrotic enteritis (NE) induced by Clostridium perfringens is a disease that affects mainly the first weeks of poultry's life. The pathogenesis of NE is complex and involves the combination of several factors, such as co-infection with different species of coccidia, immunosuppression and stress. Stress is one of the main limiting factors in poultry production. Although several studies emphasized the effects of stress on immunity, few works analyzed these effects on immunoglobulins and on germinal centres (GCs), which are specialized microenvironments, responsible for generating immune ce

Dietary supplementation with Bacillus velezensis enhances the intestinal health of broiler chickens challenged with necrotic enteritis via reshaping the structure and function of the intestinal flora.

Probiotics have great potential in maintaining intestinal health and ensuring the growth performance of broiler chickens, while the effects of Bacillus velezensis (BV) have not yet been fully characterized. In the present study, a necrotic enteritis model was established based on the combined infection of coccidia and Clostridium perfringens (CCP), and the effects of dietary supplementation with BV on growth performance and intestinal health were investigated. Our outcomes showed that dietary supplementation with BV contributed to alleviating the negative effects of CCP on the growth performan

Impacts of a highly pathogenic ovine Eimeria ovinoidalis on the growth of Hu lambs.

The apicomplexan Eimeria ovinoidalis is distributed worldwide. It can cause clinical coccidiosis, which is one of the most pathogenic species in sheep, reducing growth rates and resulting in significant economic losses in the industry. Its principal clinical sign is profuse diarrhoea in young animals. In this study, we established a model of E. ovinoidalis infection in lambs to understand its pathogenicity and evaluate the gut microbiota and fecal metabolite profiles. Specifically, we observed a significant shift in the abundance of bacteria and disrupted metabolism in lambs. Especially during

Functional Characterization of the Thrombospondin-Related Paralogous Proteins Rhoptry Discharge Factors 1 and 2 Unveils Phenotypic Plasticity in Toxoplasma gondii Rhoptry Exocytosis.

To gain access to the intracellular cytoplasmic niche essential for their growth and replication, apicomplexan parasites such as Toxoplasma gondii rely on the timely secretion of two types of apical organelles named micronemes and rhoptries. Rhoptry proteins are key to host cell invasion and remodeling, however, the molecular mechanisms underlying the tight control of rhoptry discharge are poorly understood. Here, we report the identification and functional characterization of two novel T. gondii thrombospondin-related proteins implicated in rhoptry exocytosis. The two proteins, already annota

Microenvironment pH modified solid dispersion of Toltrazuril as a new strategy to improve the treatment of experimental Apicomplexan infection.

The phylum Apicomplexa contains some of the most serious human and veterinary parasites, including Eimeria magna, Toxoplasma gondii, and many others. Toltrazuril (TOL) has activity against multiple stages of Apicomplexan parasites, but its clinical use is limited by low bioavailability. In present study, we prepared one new formulation named the microenvironment pH modified solid dispersion (pHM-SD), which was composed of three components including Ca(OH)2, TOL, and PVPk30 with the weight ratio of 1:8:8. In vivo evaluation for bioavailability and efficacy of the pHM-SD was conducted following

Responses of soil microeukaryotic communities to short-term fumigation-incubation revealed by MiSeq amplicon sequencing.

In soil microbiology, there is a "paradox" of soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization, which is that even though chloroform fumigation destroys majority of the soil microbial biomass, SOC mineralization continues at the same rate as in the non-fumigated soil during the incubation period. Soil microeukaryotes as important SOC decomposers, however, their community-level responses to chloroform fumigation are not well understood. Using the 18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we analyzed the composition, diversity, and C-metabolic functions of a grassland soil and an arable soil microeukaryotic co
