Environmental-like exposure to low levels of estrogen affects sexual behavior and physiology of female rats.

Xenoestrogens are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that mimic the action of endogenous estrogen hormones. Effects of xenoestrogen on aquatic wildlife are well documented, whereas the experimental evidence for impairment of reproductive behavior and physiology in mammals after exposure to xenoestrogens has been debated. The strongest arguments against such studies have been that the route, time course, and intensity of exposure did not simulate environmental exposure and that the chemicals tested have additional nonestrogenic toxic effects, hindering generalization of actual xenoestrogenic effect

[Surgical correction of vaginal agenesis].

BACKGROUND: Vaginal agenesis is a rare congenital disorder. It requires surgical management and still it is not defined universally. The surgical resolution of the pure vaginal agenesis, through fasciocutaneous pudendal thigh flaps, has few complications and allows the copulative function in normal conditions. OBJECTIVE: To assess the results of the vaginal agenesis surgical management. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 1996 to January 2005 we identified 33 patients with Müllerian duct and urogenital sinus disorders; eight of them had vaginal agenesis diagnosis. All the patients were subjec

The neurophysiology of the sexual cycle.

The cycle of sexual activity in men and women occurs in 4 phases--excitation, plateau, orgasm, resolution--which are guided by sexual desire. Male sexual activity is characterized by erection, seminal emission and ejaculation (orgasm), whereas female sexual activity is characterized by vaginal lubrication, erection of the clitoris and orgasm. These responses are under the control of numerous central and peripheral neural systems. The central supraspinal systems are mainly localized in the limbic system (olfactory nuclei, medial preoptic area, nucleus accumbens, amygdala, hippocampus etc.), in

In utero through lactational exposure to ethinyl estradiol induces cleft phallus and delayed ovarian dysfunction in the offspring.

Most of the attention currently focused on endocrine-active chemicals is directed to their effects on the development of offspring exposed to them in utero or during the neonatal period. Pregnant Crj:CD(SD)IGS rats were given ethinyl estradiol (EE) orally in doses of 0.5-50 microg/kg/day from gestational day 7 to postnatal day 18, and their offspring were examined for its effects. Our previous study according to a similar protocol demonstrated the occurrence of cleft phallus in the female offspring exposed to 50 microg/kg of EE in utero and during the lactation period. The present study was de

Experimental transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi through the genitalia of albino mice.

Trypanosoma cruzi is usually transmitted by contact with the excreta of infected Triatominae; among non-vectorial infections, direct transmission through coitus has been proposed. We investigated this possibility by instilling, through the external meatus of the vagina and the penis of previously anesthetized NMRI albino mice, blood of mice infected with strains isolated from Didelphis marsupialis (opossum, strain CO57), Rattus rattus (rat, strain CO22) and human (strain EP). Some animals were allowed to copulate the same day of the instillation. In other experiments, the strains were inoculat

Different types of oestrous cycle in two closely related South American rodents (Cavia aperea and Galea musteloides) with different social and mating systems.

A comparative approach was used to investigate two closely related South American rodent species: the wild cavy (Cavia aperea) and the yellow-toothed cavy (Galea musteloides). These species of wild guinea-pig inhabit different habitats and show divergent social and mating systems. Cavia have a polygynous mating system, whereas in Galea promiscuous mating occurs. These observations correspond to functional variations in sperm characteristics, which might be interpreted as adaptations to different reproductive patterns in the females of both species. Twenty-two female C. aperea and G. musteloide

[Human health risks with regard to persistent infections and permanent excretors].

Specifically pathogenous germs affect our environment in many different ways, e.g. through food, waste, sewage or living vectors like birds, arthropodes and other pests. Domestic animals and pets as well as human beings are the most dangerous carriers of infectious agents and permanent excretors. Persistent infections form the infectiological basis in this context. They establish the inexhaustible reservoir of the contamination of the environment with epidemic pathogens, thus endangering the health of human beings. By means of molecularbiological research on the functional bases of germ persis

Hormonal correlates of 'masculinization' in female spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta). 1. Infancy to sexual maturity.

This report is concerned with hormone concentrations accompanying sexual maturation in a highly 'masculinized' female mammal, the spotted hyaena, Crocuta crocuta. Plasma concentrations of testosterone, androstenedione and oestrogen were determined by radioimmunoassay in a longitudinal study of 12 female and eight male hyaenas 2.5-62.5 months old. Concentrations of testosterone were significantly higher in males than in females after 26.5 months of age, but earlier measurements did not differ between sexes. Mean testosterone concentrations in adult female hyaenas (0.4-0.5 ng ml-1) were similar

Transport, Distribution and Elimination of Mammalian Sperm Following Natural Mating and Insemination.

The integrity of transport, distribution and elimination of sperm in the female genital tract plays a pivotal role for successful reproduction in mammals. At coitus, millions or billions of sperm are deposited either into the anterior vagina (human, primates), the cervix (most mammalian species) or the uterus (pig). In most species, the first anatomical barrier is the cervix, where spermatozoa with poor morphology and motility are filtered out by sticking to the cervical mucus. The second anatomical barrier is the uterotubal junction (UTJ) with its tortuous and narrow lumen. Finally, only a fe

Characteristics of ejaculated rat semen after lesion of scrotal nerves.

The scrotum, representing the pouch surrounding the testes and their associated structures, plays a significant role in maintaining the gonad at a temperature lower than that of the body. Although thermoregulation of the testes has been ascribed as a main function of the scrotum, here we found that mechanical stimulation of the scrotum is important during mating to facilitate the appropriate expulsion of semen during ejaculation. Previously we showed that the scrotal skin area is innervated by two nerve branches, the proximal (Psb) and distal (Dsb) scrotal branches which supply the proximal or

Exposure to an anabolic steroid changes female mice's sexual responses according to sex partner.

INTRODUCTION: Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) affect human female sexual behaviors. Animal models have been useful in uncovering the neural mechanisms governing changes in female sexual response upon AAS exposure. AIM: We quantify the sexual response of AAS-exposed gonadally intact female mice when paired with gonadally intact female or male pairs. METHODS: C57Bl/6 female mice were systemically exposed to the AAS 17alpha-methyltestosterone (7.5 mg/kg) for 17 days via a subcutaneous osmotic implant. On days 15-17, these females were allowed to mate with males or proestrus female partners i

Bremelanotide: an overview of preclinical CNS effects on female sexual function.

INTRODUCTION: Bremelanotide is an analogue of the naturally occurring peptide alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH). It stimulates erection in men and male rats, and is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. AIM: To review the effects of bremelanotide, an analogue of the naturally occurring peptide alpha-MSH, on the preclinical indices of sexual desire in female rats, and where in the brain these actions may occur. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Appetitive sexual behaviors, such as solicitations, hops and darts, and pacing, were assessed along with consumm

The medial amygdala controls the coital access of female rats: a possible involvement of emotional responsiveness.

Partner preference and paced mating tests were accomplished in ovariectomized female rats following bilateral radiofrequency lesions in the medial amygdala. Open field behavior and passive avoidance learning were also examined to investigate the underlying behavioral mechanism. Partner preference was determined in a chamber located between castrated and sexually active males. Airborne olfactory cues were presented to the female through small holes on the partition. The lesion diminished preference for the odor of sexually active males over that of castrated males, even after injection with a h

Ultrastructural evidence for a direct excitatory pathway from the nucleus retroambiguus to lateral longissimus and quadratus lumborum motoneurons in the female golden hamster.

During mating, the female golden hamster displays a stereotyped specific receptive posture, characterized by lordosis of the back, elevation of the tail, and extension of the legs. Muscles involved in this posture are thought to be iliopsoas, cutaneus trunci, lateral longissimus (LL), and quadratus lumborum (QL). Lesion studies in rats suggest that mating behavior is controlled by the mesencephalic periaqueductal gray (PAG). The PAG does not project directly to the motoneurons innervating the muscles involved in mating, but is thought to make use of the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) as relay. Th

Ovarian regulation of postcoital gonadotropin release in the rabbit: reexamination of a functional role for 20 alphadihydroprogesterone.

In the rabbit, it has proposed that an ovarian progestin, 20 alpha-dihydroprogesterone (20alphaP), released at mating, is essential for a normal postcoital LH surge. However, we measured plasma levels of LH and 20alphaP after mating in rabbits and observed that the frequency, magnitude and time-course of changes in circulating levels of 20alphaP seemed inappropiate to account for the rapid and major surge of LH secretion. This prompted us to re-evalute the role of the ovary in regulating postcoital LH secretion. In chronically ovariectomized (greater than 30 days) does pretreated with estrogen

A catalog of mRNAs transferred from males to females during mating in Drosophila arizonae and D. mojavensis.

mRNA is a common component of male ejaculates across diverse organisms, yet whether these male-derived mRNAs (mdRNAs) serve biological functions in females or represent incidental byproducts of ejaculate composition remains unresolved. Recent work in Drosophilq arizonae demonstrated that mdRNAs are translated by female reproductive tract cells into proteins, and that genes encoding them have functional postmating effects, suggesting that at least some mdRNAs are biologically important. A systematic characterization of the mdRNA repertoire in this species is therefore a necessary next step. Her

Sequencing of distinct wing behaviors during Drosophila courtship.

Some behaviors, like biting followed by chewing and then swallowing, unfold in stereotyped sequences, while others, such as limb movements during defensive maneuvers, can be flexibly combined as needed. During courtship, male Drosophilid flies produce a series of actions, including orientation, tapping, singing, licking, and copulation, that follow an ordered but temporally variable sequence.1,2 At shorter timescales, however, individual actions remain highly dynamic. For example, courtship songs are composed of variable sequences of distinct syllables, with their patterning and amplitude acti

Leptin action on ARC-PVN neural circuit regulates ejaculation behavior by altering sympathetic neuroplasticity.

BACKGROUND: Although some studies have revealed the close relationship between leptin and premature ejaculation in clinical practice, whether and how leptin participates in the regulation of ejaculatory behaviors are still unknown. OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of leptin on ejaculatory behaviors and its underlying mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Copulation behavior tests were performed after acute and chronic leptin administration at peripheral and central levels. Chelonian perivitelline membrane-bound sperm detection: A new breeding management tool.

Perivitelline membrane (PVM)-bound sperm detection has recently been incorporated into avian breeding programs to assess egg fertility, confirm successful copulation, and to evaluate male reproductive status and pair compatibility. Due to the similarities between avian and chelonian egg structure and development, and because fertility determination in chelonian eggs lacking embryonic growth is equally challenging, PVM-bound sperm detection may also be a promising tool for the reproductive management of turtles and tortoises. This study is the first to successfully demonstrate the use of PVM-bo
