The epileptogenic properties of the volatile anesthetics sevoflurane and isoflurane in patients with epilepsy.

UNLABELLED: No study comparing epileptogenicity of sevoflurane to other volatile anesthetics has been performed. We compared the epileptogenic properties of sevoflurane to isoflurane in patients with epilepsy. In 24 mentally and/or physically disabled patients, 12 with epilepsy and 12 without epilepsy, electroencephalograms were recorded under anesthesia with 1.0 minimum alveolar anesthetic concentration (MAC), 1.5 MAC, and then 2.0 MAC sevoflurane or isoflurane under three ventilatory conditions: (A) 100% oxygen, and end-tidal CO(2) partial pressure (ETCO(2)) = 40 mm Hg, (B) 50% oxygen, 50% n

Electrocardiographic criteria for localization of ventricular premature complexes from the inferior right ventricular outflow tract.

BACKGROUND: The ventricular premature complexes (PVCs) originating from the superior right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) have high success rates by catheter ablation. It may not be the same when the origin is in the inferior RVOT. OBJECTIVE: To identify electrocardiographic (ECG) characteristics that predict the site for successful ablation of PVCs originating in the inferior RVOT. METHODS: Of 309 consecutive patients with symptomatic PVCs despite medical therapy, 124 had PVCs originating from the RVOT, and 107 RVOT cases without structural heart disease and no bundle branch block in sinu

Modulation of EEG Background Rhythms in Sturge-Weber Syndrome: Impact of Surgical Timing on the Unaffected Hemisphere.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy surgery improves seizure outcomes in Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS), yet the electrophysiological patterns of postoperative recovery remain poorly characterized. Previous studies suggest that early intervention may yield distinct clinical trajectories, but the associated changes in EEG background activity have not been systematically investigated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether age of surgery influences the postoperative modulation of EEG background rhythms in children with unilateral SWS, and to evaluate the utility of preoperative EEG asymmetry for lateralizing the epil

Longitudinal analysis of the electroencephalogram and sleep phenotype in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Deficits in sleep and circadian organization have been identified as common early features in patients with Huntington's disease that correlate with symptom severity and may be instrumental in disease progression. Studies in Huntington's disease gene carriers suggest that alterations in the electroencephalogram may reflect underlying neuronal dysfunction that is present in the premanifest stage. We conducted a longitudinal characterization of sleep/wake and electroencephalographic activity in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease to determine whether analogous electroencephalographic 's

Adrenal function in hirsutism I. Diurnal change and response of plasma androstenedione, testosterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, cortisol, LH and FSH to dexamethasone and 1/2 unit of ACTH.

ACTH dependency of plasma androstenedione (A) and testosterone (T) was determined in normal and hirsute women by measuring the magnitude of change of A and T between the time of the cortisol (F) peak and F nadir in a diurnal study. There was a significant diurnal rhythm of A synchronous with F in both normal and hirsute women (P less than 0.01). Five of 12 hirsute women had a greater than normal diurnal swing of A (P less than 0.05), but only 2 of the 12 had a greater than normal diurnal swing of T. Responsiveness of A and T to 1/2 unit of intravenous ACTH was determined after dexamethasone 1

Electroencephalographic and neuroimaging prognosticators in pediatric FIRES with claustrum lesions: A 21-case retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Febrile infection‑related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES) is a severe acute inflammation‑associated encephalopathy in children, characterized by high mortality and poor long‑term outcomes. FIRES with claustrum lesions (FIRES‑C) represents a distinct subtype. However, the relationship between its neuroimaging heterogeneity and electrophysiological phenotype remains unclear, and the association between sleep spindles and acute‑phase severity has not been systematically investigated. This study aimed to characterize the electroclinical features of FIRES‑C to facilitate improvements in diagn

Resting-State Electroencephalogram (EEG) as a Biomarker of Learning Disabilities in Children-A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Learning disabilities (LD) compromise academic achievement in approximately 5-10% of school-aged children, yet the neurophysiological signatures that could facilitate earlier detection or stratification remain poorly defined. Resting-state electroencephalography (rs-EEG) offers millisecond resolution and is cost-effective, but its findings have never been synthesized systematically across pediatric LD cohorts. Methods: Following a PROSPERO-registered protocol (CRD420251087821) and adhering to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO

EEG phase synchronization during absence seizures.

Absence seizures-generalized rhythmic spike-and-wave discharges (SWDs) are the defining property of childhood (CAE) and juvenile (JAE) absence epilepsies. Such seizures are the most compelling examples of pathological neuronal hypersynchrony. All the absence detection algorithms proposed so far have been derived from the properties of individual SWDs. In this work, we investigate EEG phase synchronization in patients with CAE/JAE and healthy subjects to explore the possibility of using the wavelet phase synchronization index to detect seizures and quantify their disorganization (fragmentation)

The Individual Ictal Fingerprint: Combining Movement Measures With Ultra Long-Term Subcutaneous EEG in People With Epilepsy.

Background: Epileptic seizures are caused by abnormal brain wave hypersynchronization leading to a range of signs and symptoms. Tools for detecting seizures in everyday life typically focus on cardiac rhythm, electrodermal activity, or movement (EMG, accelerometry); however, these modalities are not very effective for non-motor seizures. Ultra long-term subcutaneous EEG-devices can detect the electrographic changes that do not depend on clinical changes. Nonetheless, this also means that it is not possible to assess whether a seizure is clinical or subclinical based on an EEG signal alone. The

Dim light at night does not disrupt timing or quality of sleep in mice.

Artificial nighttime illumination has recently become commonplace throughout the world; however, in common with other animals, humans have not evolved in the ecological context of chronic light at night. With prevailing evidence linking the circadian, endocrine, immune, and metabolic systems, understanding these relationships is important to understanding the etiology and progression of several diseases. To eliminate the covariate of sleep disruption in light at night studies, researchers often use nocturnal animals. However, the assumption that light at night does not affect sleep in nocturna

Delta EEG band as a marker of left hypofrontality for language in schizophrenia patients.

Frontal hypoactivation has consistently been demonstrated in schizophrenia patients. We hypothesized that this well-known deficit is asymmetrical, ie, centered over left frontal locations and, in-line with Crow's theory, associated with both loss of linguistic asymmetry and correlated with positive symptoms. Electroencephalography delta band was used as a quantitative index of cortical inhibition in 17 paranoid schizophrenia patients with prevailing positive symptoms and 17 matched control subjects. Delta amplitude was measured by 38 electrodes, while participants performed 3 linguistic tasks,

Deviations in brain development due to caloric undernutrition and scope of their prevention by rehabilitation: alterations in the power spectra of the EEG of areas of the neocortex and limbic system.

Wistar rats underwent caloric undernutrition so as to produce undernourished pups (F1, both male and female), which were put on a reduced diet throughout life, causing deficits in body weight of 40-70%, and in brain weight of 14-20% by adulthood. These chronic undernourished rats were mated and their progeny (F2), which had suffered gestational and postnatal undernutrition, were undernourished, like their parents, throughout life until the moment of use in this study. At this degree of chronic undernutrition, rats do not appear to be sick or morbid, but only small-for-age, they are active and

Effects of hypocretin-saporin injections into the medial septum on sleep and hippocampal theta.

Neurons containing the peptide hypocretin, also known as orexin, were recently implicated in the human sleep disorder narcolepsy. Hypocretin neurons are located only in the lateral hypothalamus from where they innervate virtually the entire brain and spinal cord. This peptide is believed to be involved in regulating feeding and wakefulness. However, to fully understand what other behaviors are regulated by this peptide it is necessary to investigate each hypocretin target site. In the present study, we focus on one hypocretin target site, the medial septum, where there is a dense collection of

Human medulloblastomas lack point mutations and homozygous deletions of the hSNF5/INI1 tumour suppressor gene.

The role of arousals in sleep is gaining interest among both basic researchers and clinicians. In the last 20 years increasing evidence shows that arousals are deeply involved in the pathophysiology of sleep disorders. The nature of arousals in sleep is still a matter of debate. According to the conceptual framework of the American Sleep Disorders Association criteria, arousals are a marker of sleep disruption representing a detrimental and harmful feature for sleep. In contrast, our view indicates arousals as elements weaved into the texture of sleep taking part in the regulation of the sleep

[Sleep disorders in patients with a neurocognitive disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disorders are prevalent in patients with a neurocognitive disorder, and diagnosis and treatment in these patients remain challenging in clinical practice. METHODS: This narrative review offers a systematic approach to diagnose and treat sleep disorders in neurocognitive disorders. RESULTS: Alzheimer's disease is often associated with circadian rhythm disorders, chronic insomnia, and sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. Alpha-synucleinopathies (e.g., Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia) are often associated with a rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, restless legs

Supraventricular tachycardia. ECG diagnosis and anatomy.

This paper reviews the anatomical substrates responsible for the induction and maintenance of supraventricular tachycardia and discusses the ECG findings associated with these tachycardias. The normal anatomy of the supraventricular conducting system, particularly within the atria, is complex with conduction proceeding along preferential pathway, which are in turn determined in part by the anisotropic properties of the atrial myocardium. There appear to be at least dual inputs to the atrioventricular node, a posteriorly situated slow pathway and an anterior fast pathway. It is sometimes possib

Consumption of a high-fat diet rapidly exacerbates the development of fatty liver disease that occurs with chronically elevated glucocorticoids.

Chronically elevated glucocorticoids (GCs) and a high-fat diet (HFD) independently induce insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). GCs have been linked to increased food intake, particularly energy-dense "comfort" foods. Thus we examined the synergistic actions of GCs and HFD on hepatic disease development in a new rodent model of chronically elevated GCs. Six-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats received exogenous GCs, via subcutaneous implantation of four 100-mg corticosterone (Cort) pellets, to elevate basal GC levels for 16 days (n = 8-10 per group)

The visual scoring of sleep and arousal in infants and children.

Age is probably the single most crucial factor determining how humans sleep. Age and level of vigilance significantly influence the electroencephalogram (EEG) and the polysomnogram (PSG). The Pediatric Task Force provide an evidence-based review of the age-related development of the polysomnographic features of sleep in neonates, infants, and children, assessing the reliability and validity of these features, and assessing alternative methods of measurement. We used this annotated supporting text to develop rules for scoring sleep and arousals in infants and children. A pediatric EEG or PSG ca
