Affective startle potentiation in juvenile offenders: the role of conduct problems and psychopathic traits.

Emotion processing difficulties are observed in antisocial individuals exhibiting serious antisocial behavior. This study examined emotion processing in 40 male juvenile offenders (JOs) and 52 male controls by measuring startle reflex responses to aversive sounds during the passive viewing of affective and neutral images. JOs as a group exhibited reduced startle-elicited blinks across all slide categories compared to normal controls. Moreover, within the offender group those with more conduct disorder symptoms and higher levels of psychopathic traits displayed reduced startle amplitudes compar

The nature of goal-directed action representations in infancy.

A critical question for developmental psychologists concerns how representations in infancy are best characterized. Past and current research provides paradoxical evidence regarding the nature of early representations: in some ways, infants appear to build concrete and specific representations that guide their online perception and understanding of different events; in other ways, infants appear to possess abstract representations that support inferences regarding unseen event outcomes. Characterizing the nature of early representations across domains is a central charge for developmentalists

Review of first trial responses in balance control: influence of vestibular loss and Parkinson's disease.

The reaction to an unexpected balance disturbance is unpracticed, often startling and frequently associated with falls. This everyday situation can be reproduced in an experimental setting by exposing standing humans to sudden, unexpected and controlled movements of a support surface. In this review, we focus on the responses to the very first balance perturbation, the so-called first trial reactions (FTRs). Detailed analysis of FTRs may have important implications, both for clinical practice (providing new insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying accidental falls in real lif

Learning face-name associations and the effect of age and performance: a PET activation study.

Learning face-name associations is a complex task to be mastered in every day life that approaches the limits of cognitive capacity in most normal humans. We studied brain activation during face-name learning using positron emission tomography (PET) in 11 normal volunteers. The most intense activation was seen in occipital association cortex (BA 18) bilaterally, also involving lingual and fusiform gyrus (BA 37). In the left hemisphere additional activation were located in inferior temporal gyrus, the inferior part of pre- and postcentral gyrus, and orbitofrontal cortex (BA 11), whereas in the

Vestibular and balance rehabilitation therapy.

A prospective observational study of the performance of patients enrolled in an individually customized program of habituation and balance rehabilitation physical therapy was conducted from January 1988 to January 1990. Patients ranged in age from 20 to 89 years, with a wide variety of diagnoses. Two global outcome measures--posttherapy symptom response score and pretherapy and posttherapy disability score--were developed and used to judge overall patient performance. In addition, two specific indicators--one for balance performance (dynamic posturography) and one for sensitivity to rapid head

Skin conductance orienting response in unmedicated RDC schizophrenic, schizoaffective, depressed, and control subjects.

In an evaluation of the skin conductance orienting response (SCOR) as a marker for schizophrenia, skin conductance (SC) activity was studied in 36 Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) schizophrenic (SCZ), 17 schizoaffective--mainly schizophrenic (SA), 24 depressed (DEP), and 25 psychiatrically well control (CONT) subjects. All subjects were unmedicated. Data are presented from four paradigms: a series of 1 s 70 dB tones in a no-task habituation paradigm; a similar series of 103 dB tones; a series of tones with a button-press (reaction time) task; and a loud white noise stimulus (without task). Neonatal respiration, feeding and neurobehavioural state. Effects of intrapartum bupivacaine, pethidine and pethidine reversed by naloxone.

The effects on mature newborn have been compared at 0.5, 4, 8 12 24 and 48 hr after birth, of maternally administered epidural bupivacaine (11 babies) or pethidine (18 babies) or pethidine reversed by naloxone administered intramuscularly to the newborn (15 babies). Bupivacaine (mean dose 130 mg) had less effect that pethidine (mean dose 183.3 mg) on alveolar carbon dioxide tension (PACO2) at 0.5 hr after birth, but had a similar effect to pethidine on feeding, elicited reflexes and produced more depression of muscle tone up to 48 hr. Bupivacaine had more effect on PACO2 feeding measures, elic

Intrinsic connectivity networks during fear and safety learning in youth.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have focused on characterising the brain's intrinsic connectivity networks during fear learning, going beyond traditional brain activation analyses, to study the acquisition of fearful associations as a model for clinical anxiety onset. AIMS: Given the sharp increase in prevalence of affective disorders during puberty, a period marked by heightened affective sensitivity and fronto-amygdala circuitry development, the current study compares the connectivity within and between the salience network, executive control network and default mode network throughout fear lear

Brain regions and functional interactions supporting early word recognition in the face of input variability.

Perception and cognition in infants have been traditionally investigated using habituation paradigms, assuming that babies' memories in laboratory contexts are best constructed after numerous repetitions of the very same stimulus in the absence of interference. A crucial, yet open, question regards how babies deal with stimuli experienced in a fashion similar to everyday learning situations-namely, in the presence of interfering stimuli. To address this question, we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy to test 40 healthy newborns on their ability to encode words presented in concomitance

Altered visual repetition suppression in Fragile X Syndrome: New evidence from ERPs and oscillatory activity.

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder associated with cognitive and behavioural deficits. In particular, neuronal habituation processes have been shown to be altered in FXS patients. Yet, while such deficits have been primarily explored using auditory stimuli, less is known in the visual modality. Here, we investigated the putative alteration of repetition suppression using faces in FXS patients compared to controls that had the same age distribution. Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals were acquired while participants were presented with 18 different faces, each

Update on laser-evoked potential findings in fibromyalgia patients in light of clinical and skin biopsy features.

In fibromyalgia (FM), reduced habituation of laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) suggests a dysfunction of pain processing at a central level. In this study, we aimed to further examine the nociceptive pathways at the peripheral to the central level in a large group of FM patients by means of LEPs and skin biopsy, in light of healthy controls findings and main clinical features. One hundred and ninety-nine FM patients and 109 age- and sex-matched controls were submitted to LEPs by the dorsum of the right hand and the skin over the right chest and knee tender point stimulation. Skin biopsy was perfo

Adolescent daily and general maladjustment: is there reactivity to daily repeated measures methodologies?

The present study examined whether repeated exposure to daily surveys about negative social experiences predicts changes in adolescents' daily and general maladjustment, and whether question content moderates these changes. Across a 2-week period, 6th-grade students (N = 215; mode age = 11) completed 5 daily reports tapping experienced or experienced and witnessed negative events, or they completed no daily reports. General maladjustment was measured in 2-week intervals before, at the end of, and 2 weeks after the daily report study. Daily maladjustment either decreased or did not change acros

Physical activity, but not environmental complexity, facilitates HPA axis response habituation to repeated audiogenic stress despite neurotrophin mRNA regulation in both conditions.

Stress exacerbates several physical and psychological disorders. Voluntary exercise can reduce susceptibility to many of these stress-associated disorders. In rodents, voluntary exercise can reduce hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activity in response to various stressors as well as upregulate several brain neurotrophins. An important issue regarding voluntary exercise is whether its effect on the reduction of HPA axis activation in response to stress is due to the physical activity itself or simply the enhanced environmental complexity provided by the running wheels. The prese

The effects of NMDA receptor antagonists on attentional set-shifting task performance in mice.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive deficits, including an impaired ability to shift perceptual attentional set, belong to the core features of schizophrenia, are associated with prefrontal cortical dysfunctions, and may involve glutamate NMDA receptors. Although phencyclidine disturbs cognitive flexibility, little is known about the effects of ketamine and other NMDA antagonists that differ in receptor subunit selectivity, particularly in the mouse species. METHODS: At different times following the administration of ketamine, the NMDA NR2B-subtype specific antagonist Ro 25-6981, or the atypi

Enhancing effect of heroin on social recognition learning in male Sprague-Dawley rats: modulation by heroin pre-exposure.

RATIONALE: There is evidence that pre-exposure to drugs of abuse can induce sensitization to several of their effects. OBJECTIVE: Four experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of heroin pre-exposure on modulation of memory consolidation as indexed by heroin's action on rate of learning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were tested on a social recognition learning task which assesses changes in investigation during repeated exposure to the same rat (habituation training: four sessions) and during exposure to a novel rat (dishabituation test). In the first experiment

Interocular transfer of orientation-specific fMRI adaptation reveals amblyopia-related deficits in humans.

We devised an experimental strategy for assessing the cortical cross-talk between ocular subsystems. For this purpose we measured the interocular transfer of adaptation (IOTA) at different levels in the human brain, using orientation-selective fMRI adaptation. We tested 10 normally sighted and 10 stereoblind or stereodeficient amblyopic observers by adapting monocularly to phase-reversing, oblique sinusoidal gratings. Following monocular adaptation, cortical activations evoked by the same (monoptic) or the other eye (interocular) were measured for the same and for the orthogonal orientation in

The blink reflex in "chronic migraine".

OBJECTIVES: Activation of the trigeminovascular system and sensitisation of brainstem trigeminal nuclei are thought to play an important role in migraine. The aim of this study was to investigate the blink reflex and its habituation in patients with "chronic migraine". METHODS: We studied 35 patients suffering from "chronic migraine" (IHS classification criteria) outside and during a spontaneous attack, and 35 control subjects. An EMG device with a specific habituation test program was used to elicit and record blink reflex responses and to randomly repeat stimulations at different time inter

Deficient fear conditioning in psychopathy: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

CONTEXT: Psychopaths belong to a larger group of persons with antisocial personality disorder and are characterized by an inability to have emotional involvement and by the repeated violation of the rights of others. It was hypothesized that this behavior might be the consequence of deficient fear conditioning. OBJECTIVE: To study the cerebral, peripheral, and subjective correlates of fear conditioning in criminal psychopaths and healthy control subjects. DESIGN: An aversive differential pavlovian delay conditioning paradigm with slides of neutral faces serving as conditioned and painful pre

Prolonged habituation of the gill-withdrawal reflex in Aplysia depends on protein synthesis, protein phosphatase activity, and postsynaptic glutamate receptors.

Despite representing perhaps the simplest form of memory, habituation is not yet well understood mechanistically. We used a reduced preparation to analyze the neurobiological mechanisms of persistent habituation of a simple behavior, the defensive withdrawal reflex of the marine snail Aplysia californica. This preparation permits direct infusion of drugs into the abdominal ganglion during training via a cannula in the abdominal artery. Using siphon-elicited gill withdrawal, we demonstrate habituation of withdrawal that persists for 1-6 hr after repeated, spaced blocks of habituating stimulatio
