The behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia: An analysis of the literature and a case report.

The aim of this case report is to underline the importance of possible legal consequences of the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). This disease is associated with antisocial behavior, impulse control disorder and cognitive and personality impairment, which are often the earliest manifestations of the bvFTD. One of the antisocial behaviors possibly associated with this neurodegenerative disease is pathological stealing. This case report is about a 50-year-old Italian man who had a regular life until 2010. In 2010 and 2011, some critical events occurred: he lost his job, his

[Treatment-refractory OCD and its biological pathophysiology].

Recently, ample evidence has suggested that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and cognitive behavioral therapy are highly effective treatments for OCD. There are, however, certain patients who are refractory to almost all types of therapeutic intervention. In recent studies, atypical antipsychotic augmentation of SSRIs and deep brain stimulation have been suggested to be effective for these refractory-type patients. Dysfunction of neuro-circuits throughout the frontal cortex and associated subcortical structures is considered to be due to both serotonergic and dopaminergic nerve

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms among patients with blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence and the severity of different obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms reported by patients with blepharospasm (BSP) with those reported by patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS). We hypothesized that, since patients with BSP present a dysfunctional striato-thalamo-cortical circuitry, they would exhibit higher prevalence and/or greater severity of OCD symptoms than patients with HFS, a condition that results from peripheral irritation of the facial nerve. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with BSP and 31 patients with HFS were system

Food restriction dissociates sexual motivation, sexual performance, and the rewarding consequences of copulation in female Syrian hamsters.

Animals can switch their behavioral priorities from ingestive to sex behaviors to optimize reproductive success in environments where energy fluctuates. We hypothesized that energy availability differentially affects the appetitive (motivation), consummatory (performance), and learned (rewarding) components of behavior. In Experiment 1, appetitive and consummatory aspects of sex behavior were dissociated in the majority of female Syrian hamsters restricted to 75% of their ad libitum food intake for between 8 and 11 days. Food restriction significantly inhibited vaginal scent marking, decreased

Metacognitive Belief Profiles Across OCD Symptom Dimensions: A Systematic Review and Clinical Implications for Personalised Treatment.

Background/Objectives: Although obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is clinically heterogeneous, it is unclear whether specific metacognitive belief domains are differentially associated with particular symptom dimensions in adults with confirmed OCD. This systematic review synthesised the available clinical evidence and explored its implications for dimension-informed case formulation and treatment planning. Methods: In March 2026, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL and Google Scholar were searched without date or language restrictions. Eligible studies enrolled adults with a confirmed

Hyperphagia and Down Syndrome.

A.Z. is a 14-year-old young boy with Down syndrome and intellectual disability. As a baby and toddler, A.Z. struggled with swallowing dysfunction and recurrent aspiration, which improved by the time he was school aged. At the age of 2 years, his body mass index (BMI) was 95.98% (Z score 1.75). During his early school-age years, A.Z. began eating a wider variety of foods. As he grew taller and remained active, his BMI improved briefly during this time. Between ages 10 and 12 years, concerns regarding increased appetite and excessive weight gain emerged. His BMI increased from 82.56% (Z score 0.

Link Between Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and ApoE Gene Polymorphisms.

OBJECTIVE: Many researchers have considered obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) to be a neurodegenerative disease just like Alzheimer's disease (AD). The most studied gene in neurodegenerative diseases is apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene, and ApoE ɛ4 allele in particular. Although a small number of studies have explored the relationship between ApoE gene polymorphisms and OCD, the link between age at onset of OCD, its subtypes and ApoE gene polymorphisms has not been revealed so far. For this purpose, in our study, the relationship of ApoE gene polymorphisms with age at onset of OCD and its subtyp

Increased alcohol intake and behavioral disinhibition in rats with ventral striatal neuron loss.

A previous study of ours reported excessive alcohol intake, enhanced defensive aggressiveness (hyperreactivity towards the experimenter), impulsive behavior, and reduced cortical serotonin levels in rats following extensive basal forebrain axon-sparing lesions involving the septal area and the ventral striatum. This constellation of signs resembles that seen clinically in "Dionysian" alcoholics. The present investigation aimed at examining the effect of ibotenic acid lesions restricted to the septal area or the ventral striatum on this behavioral profile. Experiment 1 indicated that medium-siz

A prospective investigation of impacts of comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) on clinical features and long-term treatment response in adult patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

BACKGROUND: A close association between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents has been investigated in previous studies. However, few studies examined the relationship between lifetime comorbidity of ADHD and OCD in adults. Therefore, we sought to investigate the clinical and psychopathological features related to comorbid ADHD in Japanese adult patients with OCD. METHODS: We assessed lifetime comorbidity of ADHD in 93 adult Japanese patients with OCD. Additionally, we used the Japanese version of Conners' Adult ADH

Verifying Feighner's Hypothesis; Anorexia Nervosa Is Not a Psychiatric Disorder.

Mental causation takes explanatory priority over evolutionary biology in most accounts of eating disorders. The evolutionary threat of starvation has produced a brain that assists us in the search for food and mental change emerges as a consequence. The major mental causation hypothesis: anxiety causes eating disorders, has been extensively tested and falsified. The subsidiary hypothesis: anxiety and eating disorders are caused by the same genotype, generates inconsistent results because the phenotypes are not traits, but vary along dimensions. Challenging the mental causation hypothesis in Fe

Clinical validation of the parent-report Toronto Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (TOCS): A pediatric open-source rating scale.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to develop a multipurpose obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) measure that is useful for cross disorder research and as a reliable clinical rating scale. The current study examined the psychometric properties and established clinical cutoffs for the parent-report version of the Toronto Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (TOCS), a 21-item rating scale of obsessive-compulsive traits. METHOD: Participants ranged in age from 6 to 21 years old and had a primary diagnosis of OCD (n = 350, 50% female), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n = 820, 25% female), autism

Preventing the spread of Alzheimer's disease neuropathology: a role for calcilytics?

The "amyloid cascade hypothesis" posits that an extracellular build-up of amyloid-β oligomers (Aβ-os) and polymers (fibrils) subsequently inducing toxic hyperphosphorylated (p)-Tau oligomers (p-Tau-os) and neurofibrillary tangles starts the sporadic late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) in the aged lateral entorhinal cortex. Conversely, mutated genes cause a diffuse cerebral Aβs/Aβ-os overproduction promoting early-onset familiar AD (EOFAD). Surplus exogenous Aβ-os exert toxic actions at several levels. They reach the nuclei of human astrocyte-neurons teams (ANTs) to enhance the transcription

Comparison of the digestive efficiency of extruded diets fed to ferrets (Mustela putorius furo), dogs (Canis familiaris) and cats (Felis catus).

BACKGROUND: Treatment for hoarding disorder is typically performed by mental health professionals, potentially limiting access to care in underserved areas. AIMS: We aimed to conduct a non-inferiority trial of group peer-facilitated therapy (G-PFT) and group psychologist-led cognitive-behavioural therapy (G-CBT). METHOD: We randomised 323 adults with hording disorder 15 weeks of G-PFT or 16 weeks of G-CBT and assessed at baseline, post-treatment and longitudinally (≥3 months post-treatment: mean 14.4 months, range 3-25). Predictors of treatment response were examined. RESULTS: G-PFT (effect

Case report: Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis with a novel mutation in the CYP27A1 gene mimicking behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is a rare autosomal recessive lipid storage disease caused by a mutation in the CYP27A1 gene. Due to the disruption of bile acid synthesis leading to cholesterol and cholestanol accumulation, CTX manifests as premature cataracts, chronic diarrhea, and intellectual disability in childhood and adolescence. This report presents a case of CTX with an unusual phenotype of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) in middle age. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman presented with behavioral and personality changes. She showed disinhibition

Development of a Thai tool for assessing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia: A confirmatory factor analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The early recognition and management of the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are important to inform treatment decisions. Current BPSD screening tools are time-consuming and require advanced skills, limiting their application in routine clinical practice. An easier and quicker tool for use by nonphysician healthcare personnel is needed. METHODS: A 14-item, Thai-language, BPSD scoring system for dementia (BPSD-T) was developed, based on clinical surveys and modifications after a pilot study. The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), BPSD-T, Thai Mental State E

Psychosocial impact of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Along with its high infectivity and fatality rates, the 2019 Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) has caused universal psychosocial impact by causing mass hysteria, economic burden and financial losses. Mass fear of COVID-19, termed as "coronaphobia", has generated a plethora of psychiatric manifestations across the different strata of the society. So, this review has been undertaken to define psychosocial impact of COVID-19. METHODS: Pubmed and GoogleScholar are searched with the following key terms- "COVID-19", "SARS-CoV2", "Pandemic", "Psychology", "Psychosocial", "Psychitry", "marg

Cyclothymic OCD: a distinct form?

BACKGROUND: Clinical research on the comorbidity of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and other anxiety disorders has largely focused on depression. However in practice, resistant or severe OCD patients not infrequently suffer from a masked or hidden comorbid bipolar disorder. METHOD: The rate of bipolar comorbidity in OCD was systematically explored among 453 members of the French Association of patients suffering from OCD (AFTOC) as well as a psychiatric sample of OCD out-patients (n=175). As previous research by us has shown the epidemiologic and clinical sample to be similar, we combine

Behavioural problems associated with dementia: the role of newer antipsychotics.

Behavioural disorders are a common feature in dementia, especially in the later stages of the disease. The most frequent disorders are agitation, aggression, paranoid delusions, hallucinations, sleep disorders, including nocturnal wandering, incontinence and (stereotyped) vocalisations or screaming. Behavioural disorders, rather than cognitive disorders, are the main reason why caregivers place patients with dementia in a nursing home. However, although behavioural disorders are important, there is still no international agreement with respect to the description and definition of symptoms and
