Financial socialization of first-year college students: the roles of parents, work, and education.

This cross-sectional study tests a conceptual financial socialization process model, specifying four-levels that connect anticipatory socialization during adolescence to young adults' current financial learning, to their financial attitudes, and to their financial behavior. A total of 2,098 first-year college students (61.9% females) participated in the survey, representing a diverse ethnic group (32.6% minority participation: Hispanic 14.9%, Asian/Asian American 9%, Black 3.4%, Native American 1.8% and other 3.5%). Structural equation modeling indicated that parents, work, and high school fin

The neural substrate of gesture recognition.

Previous studies have linked action recognition with a particular pool of neurons located in the ventral premotor cortex, the posterior parietal cortex and the superior temporal sulcus (the mirror neuron system). However, it is still unclear if transitive and intransitive gestures share the same neural substrates during action-recognition processes. In the present study, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the cortical areas active during recognition of pantomimed transitive actions, intransitive gestures, and meaningless control actions. Perception of

Left inferior parietal dominance in gesture imitation: an fMRI study.

The inability to imitate gestures is an essential feature of apraxia. However, discrepancies exist between clinical studies in apraxic patients and neuroimaging findings on imitation. We therefore aimed to investigate: (1) which areas are recruited during imitation under conditions similar to clinical tests for apraxic deficits; (2) whether there are common lateralized areas subserving imitation irrespective of the acting limb side; and also (3) whether there are differences between hand and finger gestures. We used fMRI in 12 healthy, right handed subjects to investigate the imitation of four

The Effect of Hand Gesture Cues Within the Treatment of /r/ for a College-Aged Adult With Persisting Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: Despite the widespread use of hand movements as visual and kinesthetic cues to facilitate accurate speech produced by individuals with speech sound disorders (SSDs), no experimental investigation of gestural cues that mimic that spatiotemporal parameters of speech sounds (e.g., holding fingers and thumb together and "popping" them to cue /p/) currently exists. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of manual mimicry cues within a multisensory intervention of persisting childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). METHOD: A single-subject ABAB withdrawal design was implement

Functional connectivity associated with hand shape generation: Imitating novel hand postures and pantomiming tool grips challenge different nodes of a shared neural network.

Clinical research suggests that imitating meaningless hand postures and pantomiming tool-related hand shapes rely on different neuroanatomical substrates. We investigated the BOLD responses to different tasks of hand posture generation in 14 right handed volunteers. Conjunction and contrast analyses were applied to select regions that were either common or sensitive to imitation and/or pantomime tasks. The selection included bilateral areas of medial and lateral extrastriate cortex, superior and inferior regions of the lateral and medial parietal lobe, primary motor and somatosensory cortex, a

Normal movement selectivity in autism.

It has been proposed that individuals with autism have difficulties understanding the goals and intentions of others because of a fundamental dysfunction in the mirror neuron system. Here, however, we show that individuals with autism exhibited not only normal fMRI responses in mirror system areas during observation and execution of hand movements but also exhibited typical movement-selective adaptation (repetition suppression) when observing or executing the same movement repeatedly. Movement selectivity is a defining characteristic of neurons involved in movement perception, including mirror

Symptomatology after damage to the angular gyrus through the lenses of modern lesion-symptom mapping.

Brain-behavior relationships are complex. For instance, one might know a brain region's function(s) but still be unable to accurately predict deficit type or severity after damage to that region. Here, I discuss the case of damage to the angular gyrus (AG) that can cause left-right confusion, finger agnosia, attention deficit, and lexical agraphia, as well as impairment in sentence processing, episodic memory, number processing, and gesture imitation. Some of these symptoms are grouped under AG syndrome or Gerstmann's syndrome, though its exact underlying neuronal systems remain elusive. This

Neural bases of imitation and pantomime in acute stroke patients: distinct streams for praxis.

Apraxia is a cognitive disorder of skilled movements that characteristically affects the ability to imitate meaningless gestures, or to pantomime the use of tools. Despite substantial research, the neural underpinnings of imitation and pantomime have remained debated. An influential model states that higher motor functions are supported by different processing streams. A dorso-dorsal stream may mediate movements based on physical object properties, like reaching or grasping, whereas skilled tool use or pantomime rely on action representations stored within a ventro-dorsal stream. However, give

Executive functions in post-traumatic stress disorder: their relation to PTSD severity and daily functioning.

BACKGROUND: Executive function difficulties may be prevalent in people with PTSD, and they might negatively affect their behavior and daily functioning. However, knowledge about the implications of executive function deficits on daily functioning and the assessments that reflect functional limitations is limited. This study aimed to measure how executive function difficulties affect daily functioning in PTSD using ecologically valid assessments that imitate daily activities. METHODS: The participants were 66 individuals aged 18-65 years: 26 diagnosed with PTSD and 40 healthy controls. All par

Axin1 participates in blood-brain barrier protection during experimental ischemic stroke via phosphorylation at Thr485 in rats.

Axin1 takes an important part in a variety of signaling pathway, such as MEKK1, GSK3β, and β-catenin, and plays a variety of physiological functions; but its effects on the brain-blood barrier (BBB) and stroke remain unclear. To explore the effects and underlying mechanisms of Axin1 on the BBB in ischemic stroke, Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMEC) were subjected to oxygen/glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) to imitate ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. We found that Axin1 was upregulated in HB

An electro-conductive hybrid scaffold as an artificial Bruch's membrane.

Many research groups have investigated the various kinds of scaffolds to mimic the natural Bruch's membrane (BM) and support the retinal pigmented epithelial cells to form an organized cellular monolayer. While using prosthetic BM is identified as a promising treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a degenerative and progressive retinal disease, the effects of different signals such as electrical and morphological cues on the retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells are still unknown. In this study, a laminated and conductive hydrogel/fiber composite scaffold by adding conductive

Early Pragmatics in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A set of important pragmatic skills emerge during infancy and pave the way for later language learning. It is thought these early social communication skills develop through infant-caregiver interaction. In a microanalysis, we tested whether deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) infants (typically at high risk of reduced access to rich communicative interaction in infancy) are less likely to engage in gestural and vocal pragmatic behaviors. METHODS: We coded the naturalistic communication of 8 DHH infants who had no additional needs, who were not preterm or low birth weigh

[Current status of Urological Education in Spain.].

INTRODUCTION: Urology is a medicalsurgical specialty that deals with the study, diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical conditions of the urinary tract and retroperitoneum in both sexes and of the male genital tract without age limit. The traditional method of training is based on the imitation of the skills and behaviors of the tutors, creating variability in the training between different centers and giving a passive role to resident internal physicians (MIR). LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK: The 2006 BOE establishes the specific formative content in its theoretical, practical and scientific

Mother-child interaction and cognitive development in children prenatally exposed to methadone or buprenorphine.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of mother-child interaction on children's cognitive development in a group of children prenatally exposed to methadone or buprenorphine. STUDY DESIGN: The study is part of a prospective longitudinal project investigating the development of children born to women in opioid maintenance therapy (OMT). The sample includes 67 children born between 2005 and 2007, 35 of which prenatally exposed to either methadone or buprenorphine and 32 non-exposed comparison children. RESULTS: Both groups scored within the normal range of development. However, the OMT group scor

Assisted exploration of difficult transitions in humanoid motion tracking.

Humanoid motion tracking provides a scalable interface for transferring kinematic human motion to whole-body robot control, but highly dynamic and contact-rich references remain difficult because underactuation and discontinuous contacts can restrict the closed-loop state distributions explored during training. External wrenches can reduce dynamic mismatch during imitation, but retaining such assistance in the final controller can compromise physical realism. This paper proposes residual-wrench-assisted reinforcement learning (RWARL), a two-stage framework that uses base residual wrenches as a

Environmental factors associated With Toxoplasma gondii Exposure in Neotropical Primates of Costa Rica.

The apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) has been found in more than 350 species of homoeothermic vertebrates in diverse climates and geographic areas. In most animals, T. gondii produces mild or asymptomatic infection. However, acute and hyperacute toxoplasmosis is associated with high mortality rates observed in Neotropical primates (NP) in captivity. These primates are distributed in 20 countries across the Americas, and although infection has been reported in certain countries and species, toxoplasmosis in the wild and its impact on NP population survival is unknown. The temporoparietal junction modulates self-other motor representations during online and offline social motor conflict: an rTMS study.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) during tasks of imitation and counter-imitation of observed actions. Twenty individuals participated in two experiments. One experiment was an imitation/counter-imitation task, requiring the participant to imitate or counter-imitate an observed movement. The second experiment required the participant to plan a movement, then to imitate an observed movement that could be either the same or different from that planned. In both experiments, participants executed the task in a baseline session and in a session

The Role of Somatosensory Information in Speech Perception: Imitation Improves Recognition of Disordered Speech.

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning paradigms involving written feedback appear to be a viable clinical tool to reduce the intelligibility burden of dysarthria. The underlying theoretical assumption is that pairing the degraded acoustics with the intended lexical targets facilitates a remapping of existing mental representations in the lexicon. This study investigated whether ties to mental representations can be strengthened by way of a somatosensory motor trace. METHOD: Following an intelligibility pretest, 100 participants were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental groups. The control group received no
