Eco-friendly remediation of reactive azo dye-laden wastewater via Lactobacillus casei immobilized on porous clay: mechanistic and phytotoxicity insights.

Synthetic azo dyes, extensively utilized in textile and allied industries, are a persistent source of environmental contamination due to their chemical stability, xenobiotic nature, and resistance to conventional wastewater treatment. In this study, Lactobacillus casei immobilized on porous clay substrates was evaluated for the biodegradation of six reactive dyes: Reactive Red 198, Reactive Violet 5, Reactive Yellow 3, Reactive Orange 5, Reactive Navy Blue 4, and Reactive Black 5 sourced from textile effluents. Decolorization assays demonstrated efficient removal across concentrations of 250-1

Prophylactic Potential of Synbiotic (Lactobacillus casei and Inulin) in Malnourished Murine Giardiasis: an Immunological and Ultrastructural Study.

Giardiasis is a re-emerging infectious disease with outbreaks reported globally specially in children and malnourished individuals leading to malabsorption, growth retardation, and severe diarrhea. Thus, in the present study, prophylactic administration of synbiotic as the functional food was used to assess its antigiardial potential in malnourished murine giardiasis. Interestingly, prior administration of synbiotic (Lactobacillus casei + inulin) even to malnourished-Giardia-infected mice led to increased body mass, small intestine mass, lactobacilli counts, and reduced severity of giardiasis

Estimation of microbial phosphate-accumulation abilities.

Phosphate binders and dialysis can have harmful side-effects during the treatments of hyperphosphatemia. Therefore, we evaluated the capability of intestinal bacteria (lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria) as phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) for phosphate accumulation, with the aim of determining whether PAO-formulated food can prevent hyperphosphatemia in the early stages. However, methods for estimating microbial phosphate-accumulation capacities require significant improvements regarding specificity, cost, and simplicity. The presented method analyzed cell-free broth to assess the

Inhibition of Shigella sonnei by Lactobacillus casei and Lact. acidophilus.

The protective effect of feeding milk fermented with a mixture of Lactobacillus casei and Lact. acidophilus against Shigella sonnei was studied. There was a 100% survival rate in mice fed for 8 d with fermented milk and then dosed orally with Sh. sonnei. The survival rate in control mice was approximately 60% after 21 d. Colonization of the liver and spleen with Sh. sonnei was markedly inhibited by pretreatment with fermented milk. Differences in cell counts of 2-3 log units between treated and control mice were always obtained, shigellas were not detected in these organs by the 10th day in tr

Current views on genitourinary tuberculosis.

Tubercle bacilli are spread by the blood stream to the kidney in miliary fashion from the primary pulmonary lesion. Activation, followed by arrest, may delay development of the disease in the kidney for many years or "healing" may occur. Renal ulcerative lesions are the most frequent source of infection of other genitourinary organs. In pyelograms there is no particular characteristic of lesions of tuberculosis. Cellular elements in the urine of a patient with tuberculosis of other organs should lead to urine culture and guinea pig inoculation for mycobacterium tuberculosis. Treatment with str

Oral delivery of NOD2-activating Lactobacillus peptidoglycans prevents postmenopausal osteoporosis via gut microbiota modulation.

Excessive osteoclast activity contributes to osteoporosis, a condition marked by reduced bone density. While certain probiotics have shown potential in enhancing bone mass, the specific bioactive components and their therapeutic efficacy remain unclear. In this study, we isolated peptidoglycans (PGNs) from eleven Lactobacillus species and evaluated their effects on ovariectomized (OVX) mouse models of osteoporosis. Oral administration of PGNs, particularly from Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lacticaseibacillus casei, and Lactobacillus ruminis, significantly restored trabecular bone volume in O

Co-cultivation of Komagataeibacter sp. and Lacticaseibacillus sp. strains to produce bacterial nanocellulose-hyaluronic acid nanocomposite membranes for skin wound healing applications.

Inspired by natural microbial cooperation, a co-culture approach was used to synthesize bacterial nanocellulose (BNC)-based nanocomposites for potential wound healing applications. By co-culturing either Komagataeibacter xylinus (K1G4) or the never tested strain K. rhaeticus (K2G46) with the hyaluronic acid (HA)-producer Lacticaseibacillus casei UMCC 2535, two BNC-HA nanocomposites were obtained (C1-K1 and C2-K2). The membranes showed a HA content of 0.49 ± 0.05 mg (C1-K1) and 1.40 ± 0.07 mg (C2-K2), and both revealing a nearly complete release of HA after 1 h in PBS. Compared to pure BNC memb

P robiotics i nfluencing r esponse of a ntibodies over t ime in s eniors after CO VID-19 v accine (PIRATES-COV): a randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The elderly are particularly vulnerable to morbidity and mortality from COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2. Approximately 20% of the elderly showed no antibodies 3-5 months post-second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. As probiotics have been shown to increase influenza-specific antibody levels post-influenza vaccination, we aim to reduce the percentage of participants without antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor-binding domain (anti-S1-RBD) at 6 months post-vaccination. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Our study design is a double-blind randomised controlled tr

Differential effects of Lactobacillus casei in probiotic and paraprobiotic forms on behavioral performance, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cholinergic dysfunction in a streptozotocin-induced model of sporadic Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cholinergic dysfunction. Increasing evidence suggests that gut microbiota disturbances contribute to AD progression, encouraging the investigation of microbiota-modulating approaches such as probiotics and paraprobiotics. This study evaluated the effects of Lactobacillus casei probiotic and its thermally inactivated paraprobiotic on cognitive, behavioral, oxidative, cholinergic, and inflammatory alterations in a sporadic AD model induced by intracere

Sustained release of Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract can induce a continuous and stable IgA deposition model.

Mucosal immune regulation is considered a key aspect of immunopathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN). Direct experimental evidence clarifying the role of intestinal mucosa attributes in IgAN is lacking. In this study, a mouse model was established via multiple low-dose intraperitoneal injections of Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract (LCWE) emulsified with Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA). We found continuous and stable deposition of IgA in glomerular mesangial areas, accompanying high circulating levels of IgA and IgA-IgG complexes. Expression of the key extracellular matrix components coll

Characterization and evaluation of lactic acid bacteria from indigenous raw milk for potential probiotic properties.

Raw milk contains wide microbial diversity, composed mainly of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which are used as probiotics in both human and animal husbandry. We isolated, characterized, and evaluated LAB from indigenous Bangladeshi raw milk to assess probiotic potential, including antagonistic activity (against Escherichia coli O157: H7, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Enteritidis, and Listeria monocytogenes), survivability in simulated gastric juice, tolerance to phenol and bile salts, adhesion to ileum epithelial cells, auto- and co-aggregation, hydrophobicity, α-gluc

In vitro adhesion to enamel and in vivo colonization of tooth surfaces by Lactobacilli from a bio-yoghurt.

In the Western Scheldt Estuary near the Belgian-Dutch border, middle to late Eocene strata crop out at the current seafloor. Most vertebrae of large Eocene basilosaurid taxa from this area were previously described in several papers. They represent three morphotypes: elongated vertebrae of a large species of Pachycetus (Morphotype 1b), a not-elongated vertebra of a large 'dorudontid' basilosaurid (Morphotype 2) and 'shortened' vertebrae of a new, unnamed taxon (Morphotype 3). This article deals with a still undescribed, smaller vertebra, NMR-16642, from this site. Our first aim was to date it

Stimulation of interleukin-6 production in human dental pulp cells by peptidoglycans from Lactobacillus casei.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6), which is a multifunctional cytokine, has an important role in acute and chronic inflammation. The peptidoglycan (PG) was purified from Lactobacillus casei, which was a Gram-positive bacteria frequently isolated from deep carious lesions and suspected to be a pathogen of pulpitis. In this study, the effects of PG on the production of IL-6 in human dental pulp cells were examined. PG stimulated IL-6 production in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction experiments showed that the increase was dependent on the enhancement of IL-6 mR
