Ocular Features in a Large Cohort of Indians With Xeroderma Pigmentosum.

PURPOSE: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is an extreme hypersensitivity to sunlight causing skin freckling and pigmentary changes because of defective DNA repair mechanisms. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the spectrum of ocular and systemic features in XP at a tertiary eye care center in India over 32 years. METHODS: Data from 418 eyes of 209 patients diagnosed with XP from 1987 to 2018 were reviewed retrospectively for demographics, complaints, ocular features, systemic associations, and their management. RESULTS: Median age at diagnosis was 2 years (interquartile range, 0.5-5 years)

[Long-term complications of sulfur mustard exposure: a therapeutic update].

Sulfur mustard (SM) is an alkylating chemical warfare agent with high military significance due to its high toxicity, resistance and availability. SM was widely used in military conflicts, the last being the Iran-Iraq war with more than 100,000 Iranians exposed, one-third of whom are still suffering from late effects. The intensity of the delayed complications correlates to the extent, the area and the route of exposure. The clinical manifestations most commonly involve respiratory, ocular and dermal effects. Respiratory complications include dyspnea, cough and expectorations and various obstr

Effect of Storage Temperature on the Phenotype of Cultured Epidermal Cells Stored in Xenobiotic-Free Medium.

PURPOSE: Cultured epidermal cell sheets (CECS) are used in the treatment of large area burns to the body and have potential to treat limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) as shown in animal studies. Despite widespread use, storage options for CECS are limited. Short-term storage allows flexibility in scheduling surgery, quality control and improved transportation to clinics worldwide. Recent evidence points to the phenotype of cultured epithelial cells as a critical predictor of post-operative success following transplantation of CECS in burns and in transplantation of cultured epithelial cells i

Management of Symblepharon Prior to Keratoprosthesis in Chronic Ocular Burns: A Sequential Approach.

This report describes two cases with stepwise management of chronic ocular burn sequelae with concurrent total limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) and advanced symblepharon. Both were mono-ocular patients with the other eye being phthisical. In both cases, a sequential approach was planned, and at the first stage, the symblepharon was released to stabilize the ocular surface and form the fornices. This was followed by a type 1 keratoprosthesis (KPro) after four months of symblepharon release in the first case, and after nine months in the second case. In the first case, after symblepharon relea

Application of the amniotic membrane in ocular surface pathology.

The amnion is a fine semi-transparent membrane that has been used in clinical practice to encourage epithelization in burns, in skin ulcers, or as a skin graft. Application in ocular surface disorders first took place in 1940. We carried out the membrane amniotic implantation on 11 patients with different pathologies: three cases of limbal stem cell deficiency (caustication with failure of prior keratoplasty, congenital aniridia and post-radiotherapy keratopathy), one case with persistent neurotrophic corneal ulcer after prior keratoplasty, four cases with epithelial defect of long evolution,

Altered Ocular Surface Temperature in Congenital Aniridia with PAX6 Pathogenic Variants: Impact of Age, Salzmann Nodules and Ocular Surgery.

PAX6 haploinsufficiency-related congenital aniridia is frequently associated with ocular surface disease, including meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), dry eye, limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), aniridia-associated keratopathy (AAK), and inflammation. This study measured ocular surface temperature (OST) at the corneal center and four paracentral points (2 mm from center) in patients with congenital aniridia and examined factors influencing OST. Forty-five eyes from 26 aniridia patients (55.6% female; 26.29 ± 17.78 years) with PAX6 pathogenic variants and 47 eyes from 25 controls (68.1% female

Amniotic membrane graft: histopathological findings in five cases.

Amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) is an effective treatment for ocular surface reconstruction; however, the mechanisms through which amniotic membrane (AM) exerts its effects as well as its fate after transplantation have not been entirely elucidated and have been investigated only in part. We evaluate the integration of AM in the host cornea in five patients who underwent AMT as the result of Bowen's disease, band keratopathy, radio- or cryotherapy-induced keratopathy, chemical burn or post-herpetic deep corneal ulcer with descemetocele. Due to persistent opacification in four cases and

The effect of cultured autologous oral mucosal epithelial cells on ocular surface reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Oral epithelial cells were recently shown to be able to differentiate into corneal epithelium, and the efficacy of cultured autologous oral mucosal epithelial cells (CAOMEC) has been suggested by the presence of epithelium replacement. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment outcome in limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) by adding CAOMEC to regular amniotic membrane (AM) treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eyes with LSCD were randomized to two groups to undergo either autologous oral mucosal epithelial cell sheet (CAOMECS) combined with AM transplantation (A g

Reconstruction of the ocular surface by autologous transplantation of rabbit adipose tissue-derived stem cells on amniotic membrane.

BACKGROUND: Corneal disease is the second most common cause of blindness in China. Clinically, treatment options for corneal diseases with limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) are limited due to a shortage of organ donors and inevitable immune rejection. This study aims to determine the efficacy of reconstructing the ocular surface using autologous cultivated adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and to develop a new clinical treatment for patients with LSCD. METHODS: A rabbit LSCD model was first established. Two weeks later, the animals were divided into three groups, including the sham g
