The influence of pH on the liquid-phase transformation of phenolic compounds driven by nitrite photolysis: Implications for characteristics, products and cytotoxicity.

The aqueous-phase conversion of phenolic compounds (PhCs) driven by nitrite photolysis has been recognized as a significant source of secondary brown carbon (BrC). However, the influence of pH on the conversion kinetics and product distribution of PhCs remains unclear. In this study, three representative PhCs with varying functional groups were selected to examine their aqueous-phase conversion kinetics in the presence of nitrite under different pH conditions and simulated sunlight conditions. The results indicate that as the pH increases, the decay rates of PhCs decrease, following first-orde

Citric acid modified biochar application at a low dosage can synchronically mitigate the nitrogenous gas pollutants emission from rice paddy soils.

Raw biochar with high pH possibly stimulated ammonia (NH3) volatilization in the agricultural soil. We hypothesized that the modified biochar (MBC) with low pH can synchronically decrease the NH3 and nitrous oxide (N2O) losses. We performed a two-year experiment to clarify how citric acid MBC influence the NH3 volatilization and N2O emission as well as the underlying mechanisms. Two typical paddy soils, i.e., Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol, receiving equal urea N with 240 kg ha-1 but varied rates of MBC with 0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha-1 (named Urea, Urea + MBC5, Urea + MBC10, and Urea + MBC

Tansley Review No. 95 15 N natural abundance in soil-plant systems.

Equilibrium and kinetic isotope fractionations during incomplete reactions result in minute differences in the ratio between the two stable X isotopes, 15 N and 14 N, in various N pools. In ecosystems such variations (usually expressed in per mil [δ15 N] deviations from the standard atmospheric N2 ) depend on isotopic signatures of inputs and outputs, the input-output balance, N transformations and their specific isotope effects, and compartmentation of N within the system. Products along a sequence of reactions, e.g. the N mineralization-N uptake pathway, should, if fractionation factors were

Microbial responses are unreliable indicators of copper ecotoxicity in soils contaminated by mining activities.

Metal contamination of soil has become a serious environmental problem worldwide. Many studies have attempted to infer metal ecotoxicity from soil microbial responses. However, much of the data from these studies tends to be inconsistent and difficult to interpret. We hypothesized that microbial response would be a useful indicator of metal toxicity in soils contaminated by copper mining in Chile. Eighty-four topsoils (0-20 cm) were collected from three areas historically contaminated by copper mining (total Cu: 46-1106 mg kg-1, soluble Cu: 0.05-2.3 mg kg-1, pCu2+: 6.3-10, pH: 5.1-7.8, organic

Nitrate and Nitrogen Oxides: Sources, Health Effects and Their Remediation.

Increased use of nitrogenous (N) fertilizers in agriculture has significantly altered the global N-cycle because they release nitrogenous gases of environmental concerns. The emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) contributes to the global greenhouse gas accumulation and the stratospheric ozone depletion. In addition, it causes nitrate leaching problem deteriorating ground water quality. The nitrate toxicity has been reported in a number of studies showing the health hazards like methemoglobinemia in infants and is a potent cause of cancer. Despite these evident negative environmental as well as heal

Biodegradation of pharmaceuticals in hospital wastewater by a hybrid biofilm and activated sludge system (Hybas).

Hospital wastewater contributes a significant input of pharmaceuticals into municipal wastewater. The combination of suspended activated sludge and biofilm processes, as stand-alone or as hybrid process (hybrid biofilm and activated sludge system (Hybas™)) has been suggested as a possible solution for hospital wastewater treatment. To investigate the potential of such a hybrid system for the removal of pharmaceuticals in hospital wastewater a pilot plant consisting of a series of one activated sludge reactor, two Hybas™ reactors and one moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) has been established an

[Effects of electron donors on denitrification efficiency and microbial community dynamics].

The small-molecule compounds produced by the acidogenic fermentation products of organic solid waste can be used as carbon sources for denitrification. However, the microbial denitrification processes, which are driven by numerous electron donors, as well as the microbial response mechanisms, remain unclear. In this study, the activated sludge denitrification system was operated in a long-term semi-continuous reactor with acetate, ethanol, lactate, and glucose as electron donors. The link between denitrification efficiency and microbial community structure under different carbon sources was es

Nitric Oxide in Parkinson's Disease: The Potential Role of Dietary Nitrate in Enhancing Cognitive and Motor Health via the Nitrate-Nitrite-Nitric Oxide Pathway.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, leading to motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia. The pathological hallmarks of PD include Lewy bodies and mechanisms like oxidative/nitrosative stress, chronic inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Nitric oxide (NO), produced by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms, plays a dual role in neuroprotection and neurodegeneration. Excessive NO production exacerbates neuroinflammation and oxidat

Control of inorganic and organic phosphorus molecules on microbial activity, and the stoichiometry of nutrient cycling in soils in an arid, agricultural ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: The dynamics of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in soils determine their fertility and crop growth in agroecosystems. These dynamics depend on microbial metabolism, which in turn depends on nutrient availability. Farmers typically apply either mineral or organic fertilizers to increase the availability of nutrients in soils. Phosphorus, which usually limits plant growth, is one of the most applied nutrients. Our knowledge is limited regarding how different forms of P impact the ability of microbes in soils to produce the enzymes required to release nutrients, such as C

Oxygen dependent nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O) dynamics during aerobic ammonia oxidation.

Ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) produce atmospherically active gases, such as nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N₂O), as intermediates and byproducts of ammonia oxidation, which contribute to ozone depletion and climate change, respectively. While individual AOM groups have been studied for NO or N₂O production separately, a direct, real-time comparison of oxygen (O₂) consumption and depletion alongside NO and N₂O dynamics across all three groups ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea [AOB and AOA] and complete ammonia oxidizers [comammox] under comparable growth conditions has not b

Divergent effects of biodegradable and conventional microplastics on denitrification in soils: Mechanisms governing N₂O emission and product stoichiometry.

Microplastics (MPs) are increasingly prevalent in agroecosystems, yet their impacts on soil denitrification rate and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions remain poorly understood, particularly regarding how MPs type influences the partitioning between N2O and dinitrogen (N2). We integrated the gas-flow-soil-core (GFSC) technique, 15N tracing technique, and a global meta-analysis of 162 pairwise observations to demonstrate how biodegradable and conventional MPs affect soil denitrification and N2O production. The GFSC analysis showed that the highest N2 emission rates was observed in biodegradable MPs-

Arbuscular mycorrhiza suppresses microbial abundance, and particularly that of ammonia oxidizing bacteria, in agricultural soils.

Interactions between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and ammonia-oxidizing (AO) microorganisms, two important microbial guilds contributing to soil-plant mineral nutrient cycling, are complex, given the high variability of soil biological, physical, and chemical properties. In addition, AO microorganisms are generally slow growing and require ample time to establish. Their communities are thus difficult to reconstruct under laboratory conditions, for example after soil sterilization. Therefore, in this study, we investigated quantitative and compositional responses of indigenous microorganis

Microbial Community Imbalance Drives Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Strongly Acidic Soil-Insights from a Laboratory Experiment with Microbial Inhibitors.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas with intensive emissions from acidic soil. This study explored the impact of the disruption of the microbial balance from microbial inhibitors (streptomycin and cycloheximide) on soil's N2O emission and nitrogen (N) dynamics. Under all the conditions examined, biotic processes accounted for 96-98% of total N2O emissions. High concentrations of streptomycin (6 and 10 mg g-1) reduced N2O emissions from 2.24 μg kg-1 h-1 to 1.93 μg kg-1 h-1 and 2.12 μg kg-1 h-1, respectively, whereas lower concentrations (2 and 4.5 mg g-1) increased emissions from 2.2

Comparing the performance of microbial electrochemical assisted and aerated treatment wetlands in pilot-scale: Removal of major pollutants and organic micropollutants.

The combination of treatment wetlands (TWs) with microbial electrochemical technologies (MET) is often studied in the lab to improve the performance and decrease the footprint of TWs. In this article we evaluated the long-term performance of four pilot-scale vertical sub-surface flow TWs for major pollutants' and organic micropollutants' removal from domestic wastewater. Three of them were filled with electroconductive material and operated under saturated (MET SAT), unsaturated (MET UNSAT) and unsaturated-saturated (MET HYBRID) conditions while the fourth one was a saturated intensified aerat

Microbiome of High-Rank Coal Reservoirs in the High-Production Areas of the Southern Qinshui Basin.

To study the distribution features of microorganisms in distinct hydrological areas of the southern Qinshui Basin, C-N-S microorganisms were studied using 16S RNA sequencing, metagenome sequencing and geochemical technologies, showing the high sensitivity of microorganisms to the hydrodynamic dynamics of coal. The hydrodynamic intensity of the #3 coal gradually decreased from the runoff areas to the stagnant areas. The stagnant zones have higher reservoir pressure, methane content, δ13CDIC and TDS and lower SO42-, Fe3+ and NO3- concentrations than the runoff areas. C-N-S-cycling microorganisms

Biological treatment of N-methylpyrrolidone, cyclopentanone, and diethylene glycol monobutyl ether distilled residues and their effects on nitrogen removal in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant.

Manufacturing processes in semiconductor and photonics industries involve the use of a significant amount of organic solvents. Recycle and reuse of these solvents produce distillate residues and require treatment before being discharged. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the biological treatment system in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant that treats wastewater containing distillate residues from the recycling of electronic chemicals. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the optimal operational conditions for the full-scale wastewater treatment plant. To achieve

Ammonia oxidation by novel "Candidatus Nitrosacidococcus urinae" is sensitive to process disturbances at low pH and to iron limitation at neutral pH.

Acid-tolerant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) can open the door to new applications, such as partial nitritation at low pH. However, they can also be problematic because chemical nitrite oxidation occurs at low pH, leading to the release of harmful nitrogen oxide gases. In this publication, the role of acid-tolerant AOB in urine treatment was explored. On the one hand, the technical feasibility of ammonia oxidation under acidic conditions for source-separated urine with total nitrogen concentrations up to 3.5 g-N L-1 was investigated. On the other hand, the abundance and growth of acid-tolera

Plant-wide modelling of phosphorus transformations in wastewater treatment systems: Impacts of control and operational strategies.

The objective of this paper is to report the effects that control/operational strategies may have on plant-wide phosphorus (P) transformations in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). The development of a new set of biological (activated sludge, anaerobic digestion), physico-chemical (aqueous phase, precipitation, mass transfer) process models and model interfaces (between water and sludge line) were required to describe the required tri-phasic (gas, liquid, solid) compound transformations and the close interlinks between the P and the sulfur (S) and iron (Fe) cycles.
