Identification: the missing link between joint attention and imitation?

In this paper we outline our hypothesis that human intersubjective engagement entails identifying with other people. We tested a prediction derived from this hypothesis that concerned the relation between a component of joint attention and a specific form of imitation. The empirical investigation involved "blind" ratings of videotapes from a recent study in which we tested matched children with and without autism for their propensity to imitate the self-/other-orientated aspects of another person's actions. The results were in keeping with three a priori predictions, as follows: (a) children w

Nonverbal expressive behaviour in schizophrenia and social phobia.

Expressive behaviour plays a crucial role in the success of social interactions. Abnormality of expressive behaviour has been reported in interpersonal interactions of patients suffering from schizophrenia and social phobia, two debilitating mental disorders with important social deficits. However, no study has compared the expressive behaviour in these two disorders. Thirty schizophrenia patients, 21 social phobia patients and 30 healthy controls were evaluated and compared on expressive, cognitive and clinical dimensions. Expressive behaviour was assessed using the Motor Affective subscale o

Deficits in eye gaze during negative social interactions in patients with schizophrenia.

Impaired social functioning has been reported in patients with schizophrenia. This study aimed to examine characteristics of interpersonal behaviors in patients with schizophrenia during various social interactions using the virtual reality system. Twenty-six patients and 26 controls engaged in the virtual conversation tasks, including 3 positive and 3 negative emotion-laden conversations. Eye gaze and other behavioral parameters were recorded during the listening and answering phases. The amount of eye gaze was assessed as smaller in the patients than in the controls. A significant interactio

My speech problem, your listening problem, and my frustration: the experience of living with childhood speech impairment.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article was to understand the experience of speech impairment (speech sound disorders) in everyday life as described by children with speech impairment and their communication partners. METHOD: Interviews were undertaken with 13 preschool children with speech impairment (mild to severe) and 21 significant others (family members and teachers). RESULTS: A phenomenological analysis of the interview transcripts revealed 2 global themes regarding the experience of living with speech impairment for these children and their families. The first theme encompassed the prob

A socio-relational framework of sex differences in the expression of emotion.

Despite a staggering body of research demonstrating sex differences in expressed emotion, very few theoretical models (evolutionary or non-evolutionary) offer a critical examination of the adaptive nature of such differences. From the perspective of a socio-relational framework, emotive behaviors evolved to promote the attraction and aversion of different types of relationships by advertising the two most parsimonious properties of reciprocity potential, or perceived attractiveness as a prospective social partner. These are the individual's (a) perceived capacity or ability to provide expedien

Tonguing behaviours in persons with Down syndrome: moderator of the effects of negative mood on behaviour problems.

BACKGROUND: There is concern that tongue protrusion may be maladaptive in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). However, tonguing and other self-manipulatory behaviours have been shown to contribute to emotion regulation in children without disabilities. METHOD: Sixty individuals with intellectual disability (40 with DS, 20 of mixed aetiology) and their parents were videotaped during a puzzle-book task. Empirical relationships between observed tongue protrusion, other observed nonverbal behaviours, and reported negative mood, maladaptive behaviours, and stress-inducing characteristics were ass

Exploring the utility of narrative analysis in diagnostic decision making: picture-bound reference, elaboration, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

PURPOSE: To evaluate classification accuracy and clinical feasibility of a narrative analysis tool for identifying children with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). METHOD: Picture-elicited narratives generated by 16 age-matched pairs of school-aged children (FASD vs. typical development [TD]) were coded for semantic elaboration and reference strategy by judges who were unaware of age, gender, and group membership of the participants. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to examine the classification accuracy of the resulting set of narrative measures for making 2 cl

Pain experiences of Tibetan children with hematologic malignancies in China: A descriptive phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Pain is common in children with hematologic malignancies. It can be highly distressing and can shape how children feel and function during hospitalization. Children's pain experiences are influenced not only by disease and treatment but also by developmental level, family context, language, and culture. However, little is known about how Tibetan children with hematologic malignancies experience and communicate pain in clinical settings. AIM: We aimed to explore the pain experiences of Tibetan children with hematologic malignancies and to inform culturally responsive pain assessmen

Cerumen Impaction: Diagnosis and Management.

Cerumen production is a normal and protective process for the ear canal. However, cerumen should be removed when it causes symptoms (e.g., hearing loss, itching, pain, tinnitus) or prevents assessment of the external auditory canal, the tympanic membrane, or audiovestibular system. Cerumen should also be removed when it limits examination in patients who cannot communicate their symptoms, such as those with dementia or developmental delay, nonverbal patients with behavioral changes, and young children with fever, speech delay, or parental concerns. Patients with coagulopathies, hepatic failure

Multimodal psychoanalytically informed aid work with children traumatized by the Chechen war.

As demonstrated in three cases, this paper illustrates how psychoanalytically informed multimodal care was an essential element of effective medical treatment of children traumatized by the Chechen war. Multimodal psychoanalytically informed aid work involves holding a variety of psychoanalytic viewpoints, including but not restricted to those represented by the Freudian, Interpersonal, and Relational orientations; its purpose is to allow for greater clarity in conceptualizing the traumatized child's response to war in order to provide the necessary care during the therapeutic process. Affect regulation in alexithymia: an ethological study of displacement behavior during psychiatric interviews.

Displacement activities (i.e., self-directed behaviors such as self-touching, scratching, and self-grooming) are a reliable ethological indicator of increased emotional and physiological arousal throughout the phylogenetic scale. We hypothesized that, in alexithymic individuals, the failure to regulate cognitively distressing emotions might result in increased displacement behavior. The nonverbal behavior of 30 patients with depressive or anxiety disorders was video-recorded during psychiatric interviews and analyzed using an ethological scoring system. Before being interviewed, each patient c

[Social cognition in patients with mood disorders. Part II: bipolar disorder : a selective review of the literature].

OBJECTIVE: Overview on the current knowledge regarding social cognition in patients with bipolar disorder. METHODS: Selective literature research on deficits in social cognition intrinsic to bipolar disorder, their occurrence and effects. RESULTS: Deficits in social cognition are considered to be core features of bipolar disorder. They are apparent during acute episodes of the disorder, endure when patients are in remission and have a significant negative impact on the patients' psychosocial outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to consider deficits in social cognition as an integral part

Adolescents' ability to read different emotional faces relates to their history of maltreatment and type of psychopathology.

Emotional processing styles appear to characterize various forms of psychopathology and environmental adversity in children. For example, autistic, anxious, high- and low-emotion conduct problem children, and children who have been maltreated, all appear to show specific deficits and strengths in recognizing the facial expressions of emotions. Until now, the relationships between emotion recognition, antisocial behaviour, emotional problems, callous-unemotional (CU) traits and early maltreatment have never been assessed simultaneously in one study, and the specific associations of emotion reco

Nonverbal perceptual organization output disability and schizophrenia spectrum symptomatology.

Patients with neurodevelopmental syndromes often receive numerous psychiatric diagnoses before the true nature of their disorder becomes apparent. We present a case in which the neuropsychological evaluation played a significant role in reconceptualizing a patient who had received, at various times, diagnoses of schizotypal personality disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia. The identification of specific cognitive deficits in executive functioning, perceptual organization, visual-spatial problem solving, and abstraction led to: 1) a diagnosis of nonverbal perceptual-organizatio

The utility of telepsychology in health care: A qualitative exploration of psychologists' experiences from Oman.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, telepsychology has become a growing area of interest, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. The literature supports its role in overcoming barriers and enhancing access to mental care; however, its usage in maintaining therapy is yet to be explored in Oman. This study explored psychologists' experiences providing telepsychology, with a primary focus on the utility of this approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This qualitative study involved five psychologists who practice telepsychology in their daily clinics. Semistructured interviews were conducted to explore the experi

Acute psychogenic mutism following total hip arthroplasty under general anesthesia in an elderly patient: a case report.

Postoperative neuropsychiatric complications most commonly manifest as delirium or cognitive impairment; however, acute isolated mutism in the absence of frank delirium or structural brain injury-referred to in some literature as acute psychogenic mutism (APM)-represents an exceedingly rare and poorly understood postoperative phenomenon. This report presents a case of APM in a 69-year-old woman following elective total hip arthroplasty under general anesthesia. The patient developed acute selective aphonia upon emergence from anesthesia, despite preserved comprehension and nonverbal communicat
