Variation of inflammatory indexes in patients with chronic abacterial prostatitis treated with an herbal compound/extract.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammation is a highly prevalent finding in the prostate. Men with inflammation have higher IPSS score and increased prostate size. For men with prostatic inflammation, there is a significantly increased risk of developing acute urinary retention and the need of a surgical approach to the disease. Some laboratory tests (i.e. fibrinogen, C-reactive protein), can play a role in identifying patients at greatest risk of complications and adverse outcomes after surgery. There have been several experiences exploring the role of nutraceutical approach to the prostate inflammation. Aim

Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oils Evaluated In Vitro against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

The spread of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has caused a reduction in antibiotic effectiveness and an increase in mortality rates. Essential oils (EOs), known for their therapeutic efficacy, can be configured as novel broad-spectrum biocides. Accordingly, the bacteriostatic-bactericidal activity of Citrus Lemon (LEO), Pinus Sylvestris (PEO), Foeniculum Vulgaris (FEO), Ocimum Basilicum (BEO), Melissa Officinalis (MEO), Thymus Vulgaris (TEO), and Zingiber Officinalis Rosc. Foliar stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen in boreal forest plants exposed to long-term pollution from the nickel-copper smelter at Monchegorsk, Russia.

Long-term exposure to primary air pollutants, such as sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), alters the structure and functions of forest ecosystems. Many biochemical and biogeochemical processes discriminate against the heavier isotopes in a mixture; thus, the values of δ13C and δ15N (i.e. the ratio of stable isotopes 13C to 12C and that of 15 N to 14 N, respectively) may give insights into changes in ecosystem processes and identify the immediate drivers of these changes. We studied sources of variation in the δ13C and δ15N values in the foliage of eight boreal forest C3 plants at

High frequency of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection in armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus): an ecological study.

The fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis has been isolated from nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) in different regions where paracoccidiodomycosis (PCM) is endemic. The link between PCM and these animals has provided the first valuable clue in the effort to elucidate the ecological niche of P. brasiliensis. The present study was aimed at correlating P. brasiliensis infection in armadillos with local ecological features and, if possible, the presence of the fungus in the soil in the Botucatu hyperendemic area of PCM. In this region the mean temperature ranges from 14.8 to 25.8 degre

Leaf Size in Conifers: Global Associations With Climate and Evolutionary History.

Global analyses of leaf size suggest that large leaves predominate in favourably warm and wet climates, and small leaves occur at climatic extremes. However, these patterns are dominated by data from angiosperms and may obscure drivers of leaf size variation in older, less speciose groups, such as conifers. Here we employ a novel modelling framework, multi-response phylogenetic mixed models (MRPMM), that identifies trait correlations at both phylogenetic and phylogenetically independent levels to investigate how climate influences leaf size evolution across conifers. We show overall patterns f

When environments mismatch - The limits of transgenerational climate memory in Scots pine.

A long-term irrigation experiment in the dry Rhône Valley of Switzerland provides a unique opportunity to examine transgenerational environmental memory effects of persistent drought and irrigation in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). Previous work in this system showed that offspring from mother trees exposed to chronic drought (non-irrigated control) versus long-term irrigation differed markedly in growth and survival. Offspring from irrigated mothers grew faster under irrigated conditions but performed poorly under drought, whereas offspring from drought-exposed mothers showed higher growth an

Disturbance Dynamics and Its Effects on Carbon in Human-Impacted Mountain Forests in Northwestern Yunnan, China.

Human activities alter disturbance regimes, influencing forest structure and ecosystem carbon. Identifying and quantifying natural and anthropogenic disturbances at fine spatial scales are critical to assessing the role of forests in climate change mitigation. This study investigated disturbance history and carbon storage in human-impacted forests and open ecosystems at elevations of 2000-4200 m in northwestern Yunnan, China. We established 50 sampling plots along the four due orientations of a mountain peak. Using tree rings, fire scars, satellite imagery, official records, and interviews, we

Health effects of subchronic exposure to low levels of wood smoke in rats.

Wood smoke is a significant source of air pollution in many parts of the United States, and epidemiological data suggest a causal relationship between elevated wood smoke levels and health effects. The present study was designed to provide information on the potential respiratory health responses to subchronic wood smoke exposures in a Native American community in New Mexico. Therefore, this study used the same type of wood under similar burning conditions and wood smoke particle concentrations to mimic the conditions observed in this community. Brown Norway rats were exposed 3 h/day, 5 days/w

Bioactivity-Guided Fractionation of Pine Needle Reveals Catechin as an Anti-hypertension Agent via Inhibiting Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme.

Hypertension has been recognized as one of the highest risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Anti-hypertension agent screening and development has been recognized as a pharmaceutical therapy approach for the cardiovascular diseases treatment. Many kinds of traditional Chinese medicines, such as pine needle, have been used for the treatment of hypertension for a long time, but the bioactive ingredients which responsible for their therapeutic effectiveness are remain unclear. Therefore, screening bioactive chemicals in natural sources is still the most straightforward strategy for novel Angi

Sulphur dioxide adsorption in Scots pine canopies exposed to high ammonia emissions near a Cu-Ni smelter in SW Finland.

Since 1994 the nickel-processing plant at the Cu-Ni smelter at Harjavalta, south-west Finland, has emitted considerable amounts of NH(3) into the atmosphere. The effects of NH(3) emissions on nitrogen and sulphur deposition in throughfall and the foliar nutrient status were investigated in a Scots pine stand at 0.5 km distance. Bulk deposition, stand throughfall and percolation water (20 cm depth) samples were collected at 4-week intervals during 1992-1998. pH and the Ca, Mg, K, NH(4) and SO(4) concentrations were determined on the samples. NH(3) emissions have strongly increased the scavengin

Diversity of RNA Viruses in Declining Mediterranean Forests.

Global change alters forestry habitats and facilitates the entry of new pathogens that do not share a co-evolution history with the forest, leading them into a spiral of decline. As a result, relationships between forest organisms become imbalanced. RNA viruses are of particular concern given their capacity to infect hosts across different kingdoms of life, yet the viromes of Mediterranean forests remain largely unexplored. For this reason, the study of RNA viruses is essential for understanding how viral flow across different hosts might occur, and to prevent possible outbreaks of diseases in

Explaining Productivity Differences Among Tree Species via Biotic and Abiotic Factors.

Greenhouse gases emitted by humans have exacerbated global climate change. Forests can effectively sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, and afforestation has been widely adopted worldwide to mitigate climate change. Cunninghamia lanceolata and Pinus massoniana, as major afforestation tree species, are extensively cultivated in southern China. However, the mechanisms by which climate, topography, biodiversity, forest structure, and forest growth status affect the productivity of these two species remain unclear. This study used forest inventory data from Lishui City comb

Uncertainty-aware breeding decisions: MCMC-based optimum contribution selection increases breeding decision robustness.

Optimum contribution selection (OCS) balances genetic gain and inbreeding by optimizing parental contributions to the next generation, but current implementations rely on point estimates of breeding values that discard the uncertainty inherent in genetic evaluations. We introduce CVaR-OCS, a novel formulation that incorporates the full posterior distribution of estimated breeding values (EBVs) directly into the OCS objective via Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) (a coherent risk measure from financial portfolio theory) allowing a single optimization to simultaneously maximize expected genetic g

Impact of Monofloral Pollen Diets on the Development of Hypopharyngeal Glands and Modulation of Enzymatic, Non-Enzymatic, and Ionic Biomarker Activities in Selected Fat Body Segments and Hemolymph of Apis mellifera Workers.

The homogenization of landscapes and reduction in floral diversity have increasingly led to low diversity in pollen diets for honey bees. In this study, we examined the effects of monofloral pollen diets based on wind-pollinated (Corylus sp., Pinus sp.) and insect-pollinated plants (Brassica napus L., Phacelia sp., Solidago sp., Fagopyrum sp.) on the development of hypopharyngeal glands (HPGs), activities of enzymatic (AST, ALT, ALP, GGTP) and non-enzymatic (urea, uric acid) biomarkers, as well as magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus concentrations in the hemolymph and fat bodies from different
