Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) have been used in hormone related disorders, and their role in clinical medicine is evolving. Tamoxifen and raloxifen are the most commonly used synthetic SERMs, and their long-term use are known to create side effects. Hence, efforts have been directed to identify molecules which could retain the beneficial effects of estrogen, at the same time produce minimal side effects. Urolithins, the products of colon microbiota from ellagitannin rich foodstuff, have immense health benefits and have been demonstrated to bind to estrogen receptors. This clas

This study investigated the influence of an organic mineral-supplemented broiler diet on the quality of nuggets. The resulting chicken nuggets were enriched with inorganic and organic forms of Zn and Se. The nuggets were processed by incorporating extracts from food industry by-products (rosemary [RH and RL], hydroxytyrosol [HYT], pomegranate [P], grape [GS], and Harpagophytum [H]). The physiochemical, microbiological, and sensory characteristics of the chicken nuggets were evaluated over a 12-month period of frozen storage. The addition of natural extracts did not affect the pH, proximate com

One of the hallmarks of Parkinson's disease (PD), a long-term neurodegenerative syndrome, is the accumulation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) fibrils. Despite numerous studies and efforts, inhibition of α-syn protein aggregation is still a challenge. To overcome this issue, we propose an in silico pharmacophore-based repositioning strategy, to find a pharmaceutical drug that, in addition to their defined role, can be used to prevent aggregation of the α-syn protein. Ligand-based pharmacophore modeling was developed and the best model was selected with validation parameters including 72 % sensitivit

The most common tumor linked with elevated death rates is considered the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), sometimes called the malignant hepatoma. The initiation and progression of HCC are triggered by multiple factors like long term alcohol consumption, metabolic disorders, fatty liver disease, hepatitis B and C infection, age, and oxidative stress. Sorafenib is the merely US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug used to treat HCC. Several treatment methods are available for HCC therapy such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and adjuvant therapy but they often lead to several side effe

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has now been declared as a worldwide pandemic. Currently, no drugs have been endorsed for its treatment; in this manner, a pressing need has been developed for any antiviral drugs that will treat COVID-19. Coronaviruses require the SARS-CoV-2 3CL-Protease (3CL-protease) for cleavage of its polyprotein to yield a single useful protein and assume a basic role in the disease progression. In this study, we demonstrated that punicalagin, the fundamental active element of pomegranate in addition to the combination of punicalagin with zinc (Zn) II, appear to sho

BACKGROUND: Punicalagin (Pun), a major polyphenolic compound derived from pomegranate (Punica granatum), has demonstrated promising antibacterial activity against a range of pathogenic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus. However, its precise mode of action at the molecular level remains largely unexplored. Therefore, we implemented a multi-omics strategy integrating differential proteomic and transcriptomic analyses, in conjunction with electron microscopy and in vitro anti-biofilm assays, to elucidate the potential molecular mechanisms underlying Pun’s antibacterial effects on S. aureu

It is estimated that by 2023, approximately 20% of the population of Western Europe and North America will suffer from a degenerative joint disease commonly known as osteoarthritis (OA). During the development of OA, pro-inflammatory cytokines are one of the major causes that drive the production of inflammatory mediators and thus of matrix-degrading enzymes. OA is a challenging disease for doctors due to the limitation of the joint cartilage's capacity to repair itself. Though new treatment approaches, in particular with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that integrate the tissue engineering (TE)

Constructing self-supporting, sodiophilic scaffolds to suppress inactive "dead sodium" accumulation and subsequent dendrite growth is crucial for the advancement of rechargeable sodium metal batteries. However, uniformly incorporating sodiophilic species into conductive scaffolds while maintaining sufficient buffer space to spatially regulate Na plating/stripping reversibility remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report a three-dimensional multifunctional host featuring cucurbit-shaped nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers uniformly embedded within pomegranate-like porous ZnNi alloys (Zn/Ni@N

Punicalagin, an ellagic acid polyphenol from pomegranate, has been proposed as an antagonist of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) and endoplasmic reticulum resident protein 57 (ERp57)-thiol isomerases that regulate protein folding and extracellular thrombotic signaling. Here, biochemical oxidase and reductase assays on PDI showed that punicalagin inhibits both activities with micromolar potency, thereby extending earlier work that described disulfide reductase inhibition. Using purified domains to determine potential interaction sites indicated that punicalagin antagonizes both the N-terminal

Phytochemicals contribute to the vibrant colors of fruits and it is suggested that the darker the fruit the higher the antioxidative or anticarcinogenic properties. In this study we investigated the possible effects of blueberries (BLU), blackberries (BLK), plums (PLM), mangoes (MAN), pomegranate juice (POJ), watermelon juice (WMJ) and cranberry juice (CBJ) on azoxymethane (AOM)-induced aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in Fisher 344 male rats. Forty-eight male Fisher 344 rats were randomly assigned to eight groups (n=6). The groups were fed AIN-93G as a control (C) diet, the rats fed fruits received

Punicic acid (PA), mainly found in pomegranate seed oil (PSO), has attracted increasing attention due to its potential to mitigate obesity. The regulation of intestinal microflora was identified as a crucial factor and an effective strategy to reverse obesity-related hyperlipidemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). To assess the impact of PSO on hyperlipidemia related to obesity, we investigated the hepatic lipid status and gut microbiota regulation in mice over 13 weeks of feeding a high-fructose high-fat diet (HFHFD). Serum lipid markers, including TG, TC and LDL-C, were markedl

BACKGROUND: Healthy non-pharmacological lifestyle factors, such as regular physical exercise and dietary supplementation, have been shown to significantly improve cognitive outcomes over time compared to a more sedentary lifestyle and poor diet. Furthermore, exercise may serve as a potential protective factor in attenuating the effects associated with cognitive decline that are characteristic of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Evidence indicates that certain dietary interventions can also attenuate the effects of neurodegeneration and positively impact longevity.
