Molecular dynamics of candidate developmental genes across breeding habitats of dengue vector Aedes albopictus in Odisha, India.

Aedes albopictus exhibits ecological adaptability across breeding habitats with distinct physicochemical characteristics. However, molecular mechanism underlying breeding habitat-specific adaptation of vector remains incompletely elucidated. Entomological surveys conducted during 2023-2025 in dengue-affected regions of Khordha, Odisha, identified Aedes breeding habitats and characterized their physicochemical attributes. From ∼6,000 collected larvae, 1,500 third- and fourth-instar larvae were selected for downstream analyses. A subset of 750 larvae was processed for RNA isolation and qRT-PCR-b

Chewing asymmetry in dogs: Exploring the importance of the fossa masseterica and first molar teeth morphology.

Dogs are animals with strong bite force. This strong bite mechanism has led to significant changes in the skeletal system such as fossa masseterica. It can be thought that one side is used more than the other side in chewing and is related to the preference of using the same side's hand, eye and foot. In the study, directional asymmetry and fluctuating asymmetry, which occurs as a result of chewing asymmetry, were examined on the first molar teeth and the fossa masseterica in 85 dog mandibles including a wide diversity of morphotypes. The association of high PC1 values for directional asymmetr

The occurrence and suspected mode of inheritance of congenital subaortic stenosis and tricuspid valve dysplasia in Dogue de Bordeaux dogs.

The Dogue de Bordeaux (DdB) breed has gone through several genetic 'bottle necks' and has a relatively small effective population size. Importing new stock into Israel has been limited, further narrowing the already restricted local gene-pool and increasing the chances of inherited defects. In 56 DdB dogs examined between 2003 and 2010, the authors sought to study the proportion congenital subaortic stenosis (SAS) and tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD). The aim was also to identify a probable mode of inheritance (MOI) using segregation and pedigree analyses of genealogical data available from 13/

Analysis of goat PPP6C mRNA profile, detection of genetic variations, and their associations with litter size.

The Protein Phosphatase 6 Catalytic Subunit (PPP6C) is evolutionarily a conserved gene in eukaryotes known to play a significant role in mammalian reproduction. This study aimed to investigate expression patterns of PPP6C and explore its association with litter size in Shaanbei white cashmere (SBWC) goats. Initially, we determined the mRNA expression levels of PPP6C in both male and female goats across multiple tissues. The results showed that PPP6C mRNA was expressed in multiple tissues, with higher levels in the testis and fallopian tubes, suggesting its involvement in goat reproduction. Add

Development of a 38 K single nucleotide polymorphism array and application in genomic selection for resistance against Vibrio harveyi in Chinese tongue sole, Cynoglossus semilaevis.

Based on 1572 re-sequenced Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis), we investigated the accuracy of four genomic methods at predicting genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) of Vibrio harveyi resistance in C. semilaevis when SNPs varying from 500 to 500 k. All methods outperformed the pedigree-based best linear unbiased prediction when SNPs reached 50 k or more. Then, we developed an SNP array "Solechip No.1" for C. semilaevis breeding using the Affymetrix Axiom technology. This array contains 38,295 SNPs with an average of 10.5 kb inter-spacing between two adjacent SNPs. We selected 4

Canine hip dysplasia in German Shepherd Dog-Greyhound crossbreeds.

Nineteen German Shepherd Dog-Greyhound crossbreeds in 7 litters were evaluated by pathoanatomic and/or radiographic examination of their pelves when 12 to 24 months old (mean, 19 months). The prevalence of hip dysplasia in the crossbreeds was 42% (8/19). The prevalence of hip dysplasia in purebred German Shepherd Dog half-siblings in 16 litters produced by parents of the crossbreeds when mated to other German Shepherd Dogs was 35% (16/46). When numerical values were assigned to the pathoanatootmic and radiographic evaluations of the pelves, it was found that the severity of dysplastic changes

Advanced Generation Seed Orchard of Abies alba Mill. in Romania Combining Genetic Gain and Diversity.

The genetic parameters at 6, 9 and 12 years were studied in two progeny trials (one half-sib and one full-sib) of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in Romania, in order to establish an appropriate breeding strategy for advancing second-generation seed orchards. The half-sib trial (HS) consists of 60 open-pollinated families of plus trees from four first-generation seed orchards, while the full-sib trial (FS) consists of 51 half-diallel crosses of 11 plus trees from one seed orchard. Tree height and diameter were found to be under moderate to strong genetic control at both the family and individual

Rams genetically superior for IGF-I do not exhibit improved male reproductive traits.

Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) play an important role in regulating normal physiology, and may be involved in the control of reproduction. The aim of this study was to define the relationship between IGF-I concentrations and reproductive performance over the breeding and non-breeding seasons in lines of New Zealand Romney rams that had been selected for low and high blood serum IGF-I concentration. Yearling rams from two selection lines (13 from the high line and 19 from the low line) were examined in July (winter), September (autumn) and November (summer) 2006 and March (spring) 2007. Scr

Sugarcane viral diseases: Epidemiology, detection, and advanced breeding methods for resistance.

Sugarcane viruses threaten yield and sucrose content, imposing substantial global economic losses. This review provides current knowledge on the major sugarcane pathogens, with a focus on virus biology, transmission, and virus-host interactions, and uses this foundation to frame practical control strategies. We first describe the epidemiology and economic impact of sugarcane viral diseases to establish the urgency of robust surveillance and management. Building on these insights, we then evaluate detection and surveillance technologies, ranging from traditional immunoassays and nucleic acid hy

Molecular Genetic Basis of Reproductive Fitness in Tibetan Sheep on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Background: Complete environmental adaptation requires both survival and reproductive success. The hypoxic Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (>3000 m) challenges reproduction in indigenous species. Tibetan sheep, a key plateau-adapted breed, possess remarkable hypoxic tolerance, yet the genetic basis of their reproductive success remains poorly understood. Methods: We integrated transcriptomic and genomic data from Tibetan sheep and two lowland breeds (Small-tailed Han sheep and Hu sheep) to identify Tibetan sheep reproduction-associated genes (TSRGs). Results: We identified 165 TSRGs: four genes were dif

Implementation of genetic evaluation and mating designs for the endangered local pig breed 'Bunte Bentheimer'.

A pedigree including 1538 individuals of the endangered pig breed 'Bunte Bentheimer' and 3008 records of the fertility traits 'number of piglets born alive' (NBA) and 'number of piglets weaned' (NW) were used to i) characterize the population structure, ii) to estimate genetic (co)variance components and estimated breeding values (EBVs) and iii) to use EBVs for the application of the concept of optimal genetic contributions. The average coefficient of inbreeding increased from F = 0.103 to F = 0.121 within the two recent cohorts. Average rate of inbreeding amounted to 1.66%, which resulted in

Validation of KASP markers associated with cassava mosaic disease resistance, storage root dry matter and provitamin A carotenoid contents in Ugandan cassava germplasm.

INTRODUCTION: The intrinsic high heterozygosity of cassava makes conventional breeding ineffective for rapid genetic improvement. However, recent advances in next generation sequencing technologies have enabled the use of high-density markers for genome-wide association studies, aimed at identifying single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linked to major traits such as cassava mosaic disease (CMD) resistance, dry matter content (DMC) and total carotenoids content (TCC). A number of these trait-linked SNPs have been converted to Kompetitive allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (KASP) marker

From selection signatures in cattle to functional validation in mice: HSPA12B negatively regulates adipose browning and thermogenesis.

Local cattle breeds have been domesticated and adapted to various climatic environments through natural and artificial selection. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying cold adaptation remain unknown. Adipose tissue browning may play a crucial role in this adaptation. Our analysis of 777K SNP genotyping data from 25 local Chinese cattle breeds revealed that the HSPA12B (heat shock protein A12B) gene underwent positive selection in Chinese northern cold-adapted breeds and Tibetan Plateau breeds. The results of the Western blot experiment showed that HSPA12B was highly expressed in adipose

Postcopulatory sexual selection influences baculum evolution in primates and carnivores.

The extreme morphological variability of the baculum across mammals is thought to be the result of sexual selection (particularly, high levels of postcopulatory selection). However, the evolutionary trajectory of the mammalian baculum is little studied and evidence for the adaptive function of the baculum has so far been elusive. Here, we use Markov chain Monte Carlo methods implemented in a Bayesian phylogenetic framework to reconstruct baculum evolution across the mammalian class and investigate the rate of baculum length evolution within the primate order. We then test the effects of testes

SSMOT: a self-supervised multi object detection and tracking for indoor farm animals.

Wearable sensors and cameras with advanced imaging technologies play a pivotal role in monitoring animal behavior for selective breeding, managing pedigree information, and tracking genetic traits. The integration of such technological advancements is instrumental for both individual farmers and large-scale industries seeking to enhance their breeding programs. This paper proposes a camera-based multiple-animal tracking, employing a tracking-by-detection methodology within the context of self-supervised learning. In essence, the proposed framework integrates an EfficientDet detector with D0-Ba

Choice of traits defines the scope for assisted evolution of corals under climate change.

Marine heatwaves, exacerbated by climate change, are causing widespread coral mortality. Novel host-associated assisted evolution interventions, such as selective breeding, are now being considered to enhance coral heatwave tolerance and promote population persistence. Yet the evolutionary constraints associated with targeting different heat tolerance traits and the risks of unintended fitness costs remain uncertain. Here, we quantify key life history traits for Acropora aff. digitifera corals in a pedigree-tracked managed population. We find weak-to-moderate positive genetic correlations amon

Effects of Breeding for Short-Tailedness in Sheep on Parameters of Reproduction and Lamb Development.

BACKGROUND: Sheep's tail docking is a widespread practice, which is banned or critically discussed in some countries to improve animal welfare. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine the influence of breeding for short-tailedness (ST) or long-tailedness (LT) in sheep on the development of reproduction parameters and lamb performance. METHOD: One hundred forty-nine ewes were mated with four rams according to tail length. Pregnancy and pregnancy loss rates were calculated. During pregnancy, the progesterone levels (P4) of the ewes were measured. The weight and length of the 254 lambs were recorde
