We compared the differences in testicular morphology and vascular anatomy between plateau-type Tibetan sheep and low-altitude Small-tailed Han sheep to explore any adaptations of Tibetan sheep to high altitudes and hypoxia factors. Testicular artery architecture specimens of plateau-type Tibetan sheep and lowland Small-tailed Han sheep were used to compare the physical parameters of the testis, testicular artery architecture, arterial diameter, testicular leaflets and the characteristics of epididymal head arterioles. The results showed that the weight, major axis, minor axis, overall length, …

Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae is a respiratory pathogen that impacts domestic sheep (Ovis aries; DS) and bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis; BHS). BHS are reported to be more susceptible than DS to developing polymicrobial pneumonia associated with M. ovipneumoniae infection. Using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues, we performed a retrospective study investigating the pulmonary immune response of DS and BHS to M. ovipneumoniae infection. M. ovipneumoniae infected DS exhibited a more robust and well-organized BALT formation as compared to BHS. Digital analysis of immunohistochemical chromogen dep…

A retrospective study in which the 18 years treatment history of a mob of sheep hosting a pyrethroid resistant strain of sheep body lice was compared with the coincidental changes in that strain's response to cypermethrin, provided a unique opportunity to investigate the stability of pyrethroid resistance in this species. Resistance levels remained very high (resistance factors (RF)=75-145) for at least five years following the cessation of pyrethroid treatments but within ten years had dropped to only 5, a level similar to many normal field strains and certainly not indicative of high-level r…

Precision livestock farming technologies require individual animal identification to integrate specific animal data with farm processes, inc … from different body parts. Our study developed an automated system for individual identification of sheep during drinking visits without human intervention, based on computer vision and deep learning techniques. The aims were to evaluate whether sheep could be identified using visual features from separate body regions (face, back, legs), and whether co …

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma evansi is a protozoan parasite that causes trypanosomiasis, referred to as ‟surra." It affects a wide variety of both wild and domesticated species on many continents. The primary host species differ geographically; however, camelids, equine, buffalo, and farm animals are at risk of infection. In vector-borne sickness, numerous species of blood-consuming flies, along with Tabanids and Stomoxys, are involved in transporting pathogens from one animal to another, acting as mechanical vectors.
AIM: This study was established to evaluate the prevalence of T. evansi in sheep…

The aim of this study is to evaluate orbital symmetry in goat and sheep skulls. For this purpose, a total of 83 skulls, including 50 sheep and 33 goat skulls, were used in the study. Geometric morphometry method was applied. For symmetric analysis, one side of each orbit was photographed twice and mirror images were created. There were 36 landmards marked to determine the outer limit of the orbita. As a result of the study, asymmetric components (fluctuating asymmetry and directional asymmetry) for shape were statistically significant in both goats and sheep (p < 0.0001). The first three princ…

Despite the scientific relevance of circular RNAs (circRNAs), the study of these RNAs in non-model organisms, especially in sheep, is still in its infancy. On the other hand, while some studies have focused on sheep circRNA identification in a limited number of tissues, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis that profile circRNA expression patterns across the tissues not yet investigated. In this study, 61 public RNA sequencing datasets from 12 different tissues were uniformly analyzed to identify circRNAs, profile their expression and investigate their various characteristics. We reported …

Rift Valley fever (RVF) in ungulates and humans is caused by a mosquito-borne RVF phlebovirus (RVFV). Live attenuated vaccines are used in livestock (sheep and cattle) to control RVF in endemic regions during outbreaks. The ability of two or more different RVFV strains to reassort when co-infecting a host cell is a significant veterinary and public health concern due to the potential emergence of newly reassorted viruses, since reassortment of RVFVs has been documented in nature and in experimental infection studies. Due to the very limited information regarding the frequency and dynamics of R…

Pithomycotoxicosis (facial eczema) is a seasonal hepatogenous photosensitization of sheep caused by the ingestion of sporidesmin contained in the spores of the fungus Pithomyces chartarum. We describe 4 cases of obstructive rhinopathy associated with chronic pithomycotoxicosis naturally occurring in the north of Spain. Sheep were 5 to 7 years old and Latxa breed. A detailed clinical study was conducted together with computerized tomography examination and completed by necropsy and histopathology. All sheep developed a permanent narrowing of the nasal lumen close to the nostrils causing inspira…

Tay-Sachs disease (TSD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by a deficiency of the enzyme β-N-acetylhexosaminidase A (HexA). TSD naturally occurs in Jacob sheep is the only experimental model of TSD. TSD in sheep recapitulates neurologic features similar to juvenile onset and late onset TSD patients. Due to the paucity of human literature on pathology of TSD, a better natural history in the sheep TSD brain, which is on the same order of magnitude as a child's, is necessary for evaluating therapy and characterizing the pathological events that occur. To provide clinicians and researcher…

Three adult Corriedale cryptorchid sheep were subjected to laparoscope-assisted orchiectomy of the retained testicles. One (n = 2) or both (n = 1) the testicles were missing in their scrotal sac and inguinal regions. Ultrasonography was used to locate the retained testicles and their distance from the abdominal surface. The animals were restrained in dorsal recumbency and Trendlenburg posture under lumbosacral epidural anaesthesia using 2% lignocaine hydrochloride. Two laparoscopic ports were created in the caudal abdomen adjacent to the retained testicles. They were identified by their ovoid …

The objective of this study was to gather current, farmer-reported data on the frequency of occurrence, risk factors and treatment practices for the sheep eye disease, ovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis (OIKC). A questionnaire regarding eye disease in sheep was completed by 135 farmers from four livestock markets. Most farmers (87%) had observed OIKC in their flock, 88% of these within the last 2 years. Farmers reported observing most cases in the winter months (51%) and fewest in the summer (10%). They proposed housing and forage feeding from racks as factors associated with OIKC. A variet…

Contagious agalactia (CA) is a disease caused equally by four Mycoplasma species, in single or mixed infections. Clinical signs are multiple, including mastitis, arthritis, keratoconjunctivitis, pneumonia, and septicemia, non-specific, and expressed differently depending whether sheep or goats are affected, on causative mycoplasmas as well as type of husbandry. CA has been reported worldwide and its geographic distribution maps to that of small ruminant breeding areas. However, as current diagnostic tests are expensive and difficult to implement, it is certainly underdiagnosed and prevalence d…

Ovine cattle was introduced into America during the Spanish conquest with the second journey of Columbus to the Antilles and was disseminated throughout the region. In 1587, sheep were introduced into Argentina, later developing into the "Creole" breed. We selected 486 animals from different Argentine provinces with the aim of determining the serological status of brucellosis caused by Brucella melitensis and Brucella ovis. For the detection of antibodies against smooth Brucella spp., the Rose Bengal test (RBT) was performed as screening test while the serum agglutination test (SAT) and 2 merc…
