Gender-specific reference ranges of the vocal extent measure in young and healthy adults.

Objective: The recently developed vocal extent measure (VEM) quantifies a patient's vocal capacity as documented in the voice range profile (VRP). This study presents the first reference ranges of the VEM for young subjects without voice complaints. Furthermore, this study investigates the influence of gender on the VEM as well as the correlation of the VEM with the dysphonia severity index (DSI).Patients and methods: Reference ranges were captured by combining a retrospective analysis of subjects who received a medical fitness certificate of a healthy voice (n = 135) and a prospective analysi

Quantification of benign lesion regression as a function of 532-nm pulsed potassium titanyl phosphate laser parameter selection.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Although the potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser is versatile, the variability in laser parameters for laryngeal pathologies and the lack of clinical efficacy data remain problematic. We provide preliminary data regarding these parameters for benign lesion regression. In addition, we describe a novel method for the quantification of the effects of the KTP laser on vocal fold (VF) lesions. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: Images were captured from examinations before and after in-office KTP treatment in patients with a range of benign lesions. Lase

Classification of laryngeal diseases including laryngeal cancer, benign mucosal disease, and vocal cord paralysis by artificial intelligence using voice analysis.

Voice change is often the first sign of laryngeal cancer, leading to diagnosis through hospital laryngoscopy. Screening for laryngeal cancer solely based on voice could enhance early detection. However, identifying voice indicators specific to laryngeal cancer is challenging, especially when differentiating it from other laryngeal ailments. This study presents an artificial intelligence model designed to distinguish between healthy voices, laryngeal cancer voices, and those of the other laryngeal conditions. We gathered voice samples of individuals with laryngeal cancer, vocal cord paralysis,

Hyaluronidase Injection in the Vocal Folds for Vocal Hemorrhage, Reinke Edema, and Hyaluronic Acid Overinjection: A Novel Application in the Larynx.

Hyaluronidase (HAase) injection into the vocal folds is an off-label use of an enzyme for liquefaction of hyaluronic acid (HA). HAase injection was performed in 14 cases in 13 patients. Office and operative injections of HAase were performed. The indications were five cases of overinjection of HA, six cases of Reinke edema and polypoid corditis, and three cases of acute vocal hemorrhage with early fusiform polyp formation. All the patients tolerated the HAase without complications. Significant voice improvements were noted between pre- and postinjection procedures as evaluated by a self-rating

The ciliary beat frequency of middle ear mucosa in children with chronic secretory otitis media.

The chronic secretory otitis media (CSOM) is a common disease in children. Its cardinal symptoms are recurrent middle ear effusions and conductive hearing loss. Until today, the pathophysiological mechanism of this disease remains unknown. The correlation with adenoids and tubal dysfunction during childhood seems to be obvious, but the origin of middle ear effusions still has to be clarified. It is known that the CSOM affects the mucociliary system in several ways. In order to find out more about these correlations, the ciliary beat frequency was examined in 123 samples of infantile middle ear
